I've heard back from Janie. Although her injury is severe, she is feeling some better today. Who can post comforting, encouraging, and/or laugh-out-loud music links for our faithful crew member?

For now let's not start an independent thread about Janie's injury- tempting though it may be since she's been such an encouragement herself throughout MC. I suggest we wait for her to give permission.

Relieved,
Maeve

Hey there, Rainbow crew: I have permission from Janie to start a separate thread for Janie, because this lovely one is long enough to be awkward on iPad.

Here's a link: Janie's broken leg needs music & laughs

Of course we'll also keep the Rainbow on course for Janie and the rest of us. Please help fill the linked thread with links to cheerful, encouraging, well-crafted music and laughter-inducing videos. I'm sure Janie is not the only one on Mudcat who could use a lift of spirits.

Thanks much,
Maeve

Maeve, echoing Chantey Lass's post, thank you for all you're doing to support Janie. We were hoping to meet when I'm in NC...she was going to drive to Charlotte. I'm now trying to figure out a way I can visit her. I spoke to her briefly the day before yesterday & she was all in favour. Hoping my eldest Grandson might be persuaded to drive me. The thread that Maeve has created for Janie is a 'Must Visit' (link above). Laughter IS the best medicine...whatever music & funnies (clean!) you can lay your hands on, post away!

Been the longest short week of work I've ever had. Friday, I cut my finger badly enough to require medical attention. No need to worry or expend any healing energy my way, it was bad enough to warrant a trip to the walk-in clinic, but not bad enough to need stitches, and it is healing nicely after being glued closed. Saturday, I was on my way in to work and got flagged down by a park neighbor. His girlfriend's dog had just been hit by a car and did I know the closest vet? I did, and I transported the understandably hysterical young woman and the injured dog to the vet immediately. And then proceeded to worry about the dog for the next 24 hours. Lunchtime on Sunday, I took a ride over to their house, and Matt came running down to tell me the good news that the dog was going to be OK, followed by Hillary, and Sawyer the Dog himself.

Egods... Been through it and more yet to come. Advice please. My 88 year old Mamma 9in Virginia) had a stroke on Tuesday, after being held against her will in her garage for hours by her drug addicted granddaughter and granddaughter's extremely abusive boyfriend on Sunday.

The power, phone, cable, internet had all been cut off due to non payment of bills. The granddaughter has stolen thousands of dollars from Mom, witheld her medications. My drug addicted sister (who is thee mother of the granddaughter) also witholding Mom's meds and trading them for other drugs. Her boyfriend illegally turned the power back on in house.

My son visited Mom on Monday with the Power of Attorney papers she begged him to arrange a month ago. She signed them, he bought her groceries, paid some of her phone bill and had to go back home to work which is over an hour away. My younger brother in Indiana has been racing to remodel his ground floor to accommodate Mom so we could close up her house and move her to a safe place. That is now on hold due to her stroke. Actually maybe totally irrelevant until we know the extent of her condition.

Fast forward to now, Mom has partial paralysis on right side, though may not be affecting the leg. Cannot speak or swallow. She is covered in what the hosptial believes are bedbug bites and had serious yeast infection. She had elevated opiates in her bloods. None of her pain med prescription is opiate based as far as I know, so either the granddaughter or my sister supplied something she should not have had. My son has PoA over her house, car and bank accounts, is working to lock up house, shut off utilities, contact loan holders on car, house and horrendous high interest payday loan the granddaughter forced her to take out. Adult protective services have been notified, but while she is in hospital care we doubt we will get much support or advice from them. Eviction is being served on granddaghter and her boyfriend. Demand for Mom's car keys, title and registration has been issued to the granddaughter.

I already have tickets to fly home on 7 October so am stuck in England until then. I have no job now so need to save as much as possible to help with this mess. Here is my question.

Does anyone know how we can get her free of that high interest loan which has been cleaning out her bank account with an autodebit and other bills. The house is in such bad repair it iw worth aapx $10,000 less than her current mortgage. We hope the bank will just take it and let the mortgage go. We know we will need all of her pension to get her appropriate medical care. We just don't even know how to start with the finance stuff.

Tamara- In a word: lawyer. Adult protective services should be able to steer your healthy family members to lawyers and/or advocates known for successfully representing elders in situations such as your Momma has been in. She also needs security protection from those drug-addled family members who have already proven themselves to be dangerous. I am so very sorry this is happened. She's not the first to be so badly treated, and she's fortunate family has been able to take action to the extent they have.

Standing by,
Maeve

I think Maeve's got it right, Tamara. It may take more than one lawyer, one for the elder and abuse issues and another for the financial mess. The Legal Aid Society in the region of VA where your mother lives may be able to help.

Thanks all. My son will contact Legal Aid on Monday. Adult Protective Services has been contacted numerous times and an official report has now been filed and we still have not heard from them.

We (the other sibs and my son along with a collection of nieces and nephews and connected friends) seem to be working some sense into my sister and her daughter.

At least they have stopped accusing us of pecking at Mom's flesh and seem to understand why everything needs to be sold ASAP. More importantly why for Mom's sake we have to stop bickering.

Hallelujia. All family members finally on board re Mom's care. Not so sure if we can get sis to understand how Mom's care is dependent on sale of house and car. But at least we are all talking and not name calling.

My baby brother who is fostering my sister's grandkids, just lost his job (HVAC licensed so another job will come) and the medical insurance for his family and the little bit in food stamps they were getting. So now he has to apply all over again. His lounge/diner is a consturction site because he had started to make a room for mom. Now he has no means to put it right.

My other younger brother is about to be evicted and his car died. He is on disability due to degenerative bone disease in his spine and all right side.

My older brother just diagnosed with protate cancer and he is sole breadwinner (musician in Orlando). He only just got med insurance but does not know how long he can pay for it. His wife has had a stroke.

My daughter was released from 3 week stay in hospital for cellulitis and extremely low platelets. Lupus attack on her spleen again.

There are problems with our house purchase. I won't go into what the stress of worrying about eveyone is doing to my body.

Anyone know how to lift a decades long curse from an extended family scattered halfway across the globe?

Should have been more clear on the older brother's wife. Her stroke was several years ago and mild. She works but only very few hours a week in a Publix as a cashier. Quite a change from being supervisory air hostess for 18 years until TWA went into administration and she lost all her pension.

The curse is long and strong.

Tam, Maeve is right...there is no curse. Please try to disabuse yourself of this thought. Life can be so unspeakably cruel & unfair that we search for reasons as to why, when there are none, none except Life itself. I realise that my platitudes bring you scant comfort, but they are written with the best of intentions, in the hope that you will soon be released from your slough of despond & enjoy life once again,

As a temporary resident of Mecklenburg County, not far from the SC State Line, I'm hoping that everyone is faring no worse than I in the wake of Jouquin...plenty of rain but no flooding, a light to moderate wind but no downed trees in the immediate vicinity. Thank you for your gracious welcome. After so many grey, wet & windy days, the sun is shining brightly & the sky is gloriously blue...a combination with which we are more familiar when we have previously visited Charlotte. I have been in touch with Janie & had hoped to visit her this week, but sadly a car plus driver has not proved possible. As a younger man, I drove in the States, but found the experience daunting & stressful, so I guess you could say I've 'whimped out' of getting myself to Janie's...just when she needs friendship & support the most...not very proud of myself.
We hope that the good people of South Carolina are restored to something approaching normality just as soon as possible. The footage we've seen on CBS News is a tough watch. We got off very lightly here by comparison.
          With love to you all,

Nigel- bus? I know Janie would have loved a visit, but I also know she will understand if it's just not happening. You might also leave a PM for Janie in case she's up for a call at her rehab residence.

Extended family in South Carolina is experiencing lots of flooding, with no good drinking water, electricity, etc.

Nigel, Janie will understand. I understand being daunted about driving. I don't drive in population centers larger than Portland, Maine. The Greater Portland has maybe 125,000 residents, if you include the surrounding towns. I can't imagine trying to drive in an unfamiliar place on the opposite side of the road from what I am used to.

Maeve, I hope things improve for your family in SC soon. I heard on the news last night about the potable water issue.

I've called Janie twice now & yes, she does understand. We are both understandably disappointed, but this won't be our last visit to Charlotte, so a meet remains on the cards. I investigated the possibilities of buses & trains, but the services were few & far between & at inconvenient times. The second time I spoke to Janie (yesterday), she sounded much brighter. She should be back in her own home pretty soon now. Surrounded by the familiar can be most restorative at times like this.

My Dear Maeve, yes thank you, our far too infrequent visits to see Ann's daughter & family (her two son's are now 6ft.+) are always fun & we get the chance to talk together in a way that one just can't do on the 'phone. We talk about Jane of course, but with an increasing sense of acceptance that physically, she is no longer with us. She lead a very full life so there is much to remember & celebrate...time does gradually heal, but it doesn't erase.
How are the SC members of your Family coping with the appalling weather? There was talk on the news last night of yet more flooding, on top of what has become an intolerable situation for too many. Ann & I have never experienced flooding in any direct sense, so trying to imagine the impact on one's life is virtually impossible. We do hope that your relatives are safe, dry & not in harm's way.
Sending our love to you all,
                                                                Nigel & Ann xxxxx

Yesterday morning I received an email from Bobert...he was playing at the Gaston Public Library at 2pm...might I be able to get there? The Library is roughly a forty minute drive from where I'm currently staying, so a quick call to Uber sorted out the travel arrangements. Not only did I meet Bobert & his lovely wife, I was also treated to an hour of The Blues, played & sung with passion & conviction...punctuated by stories, history & adlibs that kept smiles on all our faces...a meeting & a performance that will live in my memory for a long, long time...my first face to face with a Catter. I shared this experience with Janie first before posting here.
A musically uplifted Nigel...much love to all xxxxx

Nigel, I am very glad you and Ann have met Bobert and the Pea Vine...and quite envious as well. My SC family appear to be fine and have managed to pump out excess river.

Tam, thinking of you and yours. You'll be there with your Momma by now. Sending blessings to all for a smoothish transition.

Lisa, you are in my thoughts daily.

Janie is home, tra la!

Maeve
