And what good news, Donuel, about Dean.
Glad you didn't cave in with those people who gave your son a pessimistic evaluation.
It's been a long haul for you and him, both.

Ach, ChanteyLass, we all know who you mean, regardless of the spell-checker! Those spell-checker programs are such an annoyance. They are all the more reason to check that "preview" box here so as to check the checker...

As a conclusion to the Dean Saga, who stopped talking four years ago and refused school, Dean is moving out this week.

The magic potion, the magic bullet, the magic medicine is love.

He is moving into his girlfriend's place in TN. He is adking questions and beginning to learn about this strange world.
Better a babe in the woods than a hermit in a room.

Many thanks, brethren and cistern, for your encouragements.

The pathology reports no carcinoma in major places (bladder, prostate, etc.) but two microscopic traces of carcinoma in a couple of lymph nodes that were excised along witht he rest. This may mean more BS or may not. Meanwhile, recovering from the razor-blades that were flying around inside my belly is the first order of business.

My current theme song from the sainted Canadian songbird, Stan Rogers.

Amos has reported elsewhere that the pathology report is good news; although a little trace of carcinoma was acknowledge,
nothing had spread or metastasized.

I went to the doctor today. He said that I had a heart attack at some point in the past, didn't know it, and it's water under my bridge (his words). He changed two medicines and took me off another and said, "Git outa here! See me in a month."

From AMOS:

IT's not the same place I left a few days ago, but I am home. The dog recognized me. I got through all the hoops in some record short time, I think, but I am burdened with more instructions and gadgets than I would have believed possible. USing the urostomy bag is a major learning experience at first. There are seven kinds of doohicky you can use for night sleeps, hiking, etc. Not to mention the barrage of prescriptions they fired at me as I was leaving the hospital. Sweet Mother of Gawd! Poor Daly has her hands so full trying to just handle message and phone calls and the like, not to mention laundry and (now) giving me injections of some kind of blood thinner.

I have to get to work puzzling the schedule out. But I wanted you to know I have survived surgery and am home in one piece.

From Amos, 12 hours ago:

"I am about to leave for the hospital, to deliver my weary bod into the hands of the Boojums and the medicos for a few days. I am particularly intrigued by the prospect of 4-6 hours under anaesthesia while my plumbing gets reconfigured. I would prefer to sit on the ceiling watching every move, but my spiritual powers may not be up to such prowess as an act of will. So I may just slip into darkness and (I would hope) slip back out again into wakefulness at the turn of a valve by some kind anaesthesiologist who (one hopes) is paying close attention."

The test is over and since I haven't heard from any doctor I suppose nothing immediately fatal was found. However, going 13 hours without food or drink (save my own spit and two sips of water to take pills) I was very, very hungry and thirsty. Now I'm just tired.

Amos wrote, in part, 22 hours ago:

I have just returned from a loverly weekend in the wilding hills of West Virginia where a clan of song-loving folkies gather to spend the days and evenings swapping songs at a rustic inn called The Brazen Head. A long long drive. But well worth it for the chance to get my fix of people in song. :D

On the 8th of May I will be delving into the unknown as the amazing technology of modern medicine again converges on my mortal shell to tweak and remodel it. This time it will be a robotic surgeon with six arms which will be moving in through six very small incisions to remove my trusty bladder and some auxiliary bits including the seminal vesicles and prostate gland, so that when I awake I will have to re-learn the rare art of urination all anew, but this time en plastique. As far as I can recall I was an average student of micturition in my first training on the course back in the 1940's, and improved steadily to the point where I could write my name in the snow. I am not sure how well that will work with this new system, but the nurse who was trying to coach me on what to expect reassured me cheerfully that I would still be able to point the stream. Preserve the small pleasures, that's what I say.

This afternoon I had a pain in my chest. It seemed to be moving to include my jaw. I mentioned it to my wife.

The urgent care place didn't have the equipment so off we were to the Emergency Room.

I was jabbed to start an IV and blood was drawn for test. An EKG was done. I was hooked up to a cardiac monitor. I was given three nitroglycerin tablets.

Then we waited. Various doctors and nurses checked on me. Eventually I was allowed a sandwich and to visit the bathroom.

EKGs were again taken and blood tests done. Nitro was sprayed into my mouth.

All tests showed normal. They will tell on me to my doctor and I'll probably have a stress test.

Everything normal, but when I sneeze the nitroglycerin explodes.

In some ways, K, it was more of a swearing-at. We stood on a drill floor and were sworn into Federal Active Duty. In the background, someone had put on recordings of martial music -- one I remember distinctly was "Lili Marlene" and I felt ready to rush into Europe and do something or other with the Germans. Harmonize, maybe.

No, we were sweating it. My brother and I had to pull out of college; somehow staying alive in a place full of unfriendly folks became more important that the Ossian Cycle.

Here's part of the reason for the sweat: In January, 1968, an Ordnance Company that repaired trucks and things became a Quartermaster Company that distributed food and fuel. An Infantry Platoon (me and others) was slammed into the QM Company as the Bath and Laundry Platoon w/attached Graves Registration Unit. Save for the supply room and the company clerk, no one was qualified in their job. No one knew what they were to do. NATURALLY we were the only unit from Illinois which could be activated! However, we brought back a second "Meritorious Unit" citation and streamer for the company flag and had a (not activated with us) guy in the company earn a Silver Star for bravery (posthumously).

Oh, yes -- that Bath, Laundry, and Graves Platoon was chopped off and the individuals sent to various other units, mostly Infantry. All of us got a chance to serve overseas, including a bunch that went to Canada to test chemical warfare equipment in not-very-dilute mustard gas.

The best part of it all was about August 15, 1969, when we came home.
