Not such good news today. Ian rang me an hour ago - John died at 7am this morning. I'm feeling slightly dazed right now.

I'm going away for a few days, so if I don't post, I'll still be sending prayers, healing energy, etc.

That good to hear, Wendy!

My brother John is holding his own, as the saying goes (I wonder where it came from? note to self: check saying), and my SIL told me that their daughters have both gone home as the immediate danger seems to have passed. They were waiting for a talk with his oncologist to see what happens next. We're geographically scattered; my brother and SIL live about four hours north of here but the hospital is a few hours further away again in Brisbane, our other brother lives in Sydney (six hours south-east from here), one of John's daughters also lives in Sydney, the other lives in Melbourne.   Just as well we have planes, isn't it?

Thank you, everyone, for your good thoughts and wishes, and I am sending lots more back!

Well, after a weekend of non sleep, I gave myself a strong talking too and decided to stop being a wooze and take control. Phoned the social worker and said I felt bullied and requested another meeting for next week then I phoned the MD of the care company and he recommended a solicitor who has a division that deals with my sort of problem. Phoned them and a delightful young lady listened to my concerns and she is coming to see me next week with a lady who deals with finance. Mum still owns her bungalow and it is rented out to bring in a small income, I prefer not to sell it as the funds will start to deplete paying for her care , but we have run out of savings so we have to raise some money asap! Feel so much better and will wait and see what advice they can give me. The only fly in the ointment is my brother, who sees the bungalow as his " inheritance" nuff said on that !!

Billy goes to see his consultant tomorrow, fingers crossed for the blood count, it is eighteen months since he finished chemo, hold him in your thoughts please?

With love to all this beautiful crew, sailing on , the sea is blue as is the sky and the sun is beaming down here in sunny Frinton.

Hi all. I'm around these parts infrequently these days, but when I am, I always check in here, and though I don't often post, I do hold all of you in heart and mind.

Wendy, you said, "That is who my mother IS!!" I love that!! You are SO right! As a former Recreation Therapist at our local home, I know that to be true, and it can't be emphasized enough! She is all that is evident in that photo, and SO much more! All the best to you as you continue this journey.

And the best to everyone else, too. You are all dear folks, and I'm grateful to know you, even if only virtually. Just checking in here is comforting...just knowing you're all out there.

KT

Sending love to Jennie G, this is the most wonderful place to come for comfort and share your feelings,Nigel,as usual, puts it so well xx

I had a meeting with mum's social worker yesterday, she brought a much younger lady with her who, I imagine is the team leader? I felt railroaded, didn't sleep at all last night. I feel they are pushing me in a direction I do not wish to go! I did have one moment of rebellion, I pointed out that it was 70 years since D day and that my mother had been in the Womens Royal Airforce throughout WW2 and on a day of giving thanks for all those brave people who were so young in 1944, I was beginning to feel that it was inconvenient living to 90!!
Don't know if it made them think but I felt better. I made a point of showing them mum's memory book and opened the page with a photo of a beautiful nineteen year old in her uniform. That is who my mother IS!!The frail , confused old lady still has the same beautiful smile and she is still the same inside.

Rant over, welcome home Ann, love to all the crew, I am off to the beach hut to have lunch with Billy in the rain!!

Wendy xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

ChanteyLass & everyone, yes, Ann is safely back from Charlotte, NC. I met her at Heathrow yesterday morning...a red-eye special, courtesy of US Airways. She is currently sleeping off the jet lag. We both recover from the East-West flight much quicker than the West-East overnight return.

JennieG, you've come to the right place. Share what you need to share. There is wisdom, experience, love & support, right here. When Life's natural order is turned upside down, it IS odd...very odd. You are most welcome. The Crew of The Rainbow reaches out to you as only they know how.

I don't post often, but do read this thread. Never thought I might need it, though.

Yesterday morning my brother Ian (I have two younger brothers) rang to tell me that our brother John is in hospital and is not expected to last much longer. Last night my SIL said he was stable and as comfortable as could be expected, but it's now just a matter of time which could be as short as a few days, or as long as a few weeks.

We aren't, and never have been,a close family, but there is no animosity - just distance, both literally and figuratively. However it's still an odd sensation to outlive a younger sibling.

Thank you Pete...just for the record (no pun intended), 'Mad Tom O'Bedlam' & the rest of The Halliard repertoire were written by Dave Moran & Nic Jones. Nic & I then arranged the instrumental parts to make the songs performable. Thinking of you & Tommy & trusting the bone scan comes back with encouraging news.

Wendy...I'm lost for words. Thank you seems totally inadequate. Through all your trials & tribulations, you find time for me & always raise my spirits. I've said this before, but from your tentative first posts, you've become a stalwart Crew member. You are loved, admired & respected in equal measure. The trite comments I make on FB are a 'smoke screen'. The real me appears only here. Wendy, your candour & willingness to share in such intimate detail has emboldened me to 'open up' & for that, I am truly grateful.

ChanteyLass...I'm hanging in, but it's a real finger tip job! Knowing that I sail in such distinguished company, firms up those old fingertips, so I won't be letting go any time soon.

Gnu, what a meaningful sentence: "Patience IS love and that is what it is all about." I need to learn from that. I'm not renowned for my Patience.

I've left a message on Dan's thread. That he is on line & responding is very encouraging. I hope he visits us here when he is well enough so to do.

My final thoughts are reserved for Spaw. I hope you get to read this because after a little research, I discovered that 'Pat' (Patrick) means: "Scion of a noble family." It's not beyond the bounds of credibility that you could be descended from Scottish Royalty! Rise UP Sir Spaw!
       With Love to You All,
                                       Nigel.

Ts&Ps, Wendy. It's hard. I had a hell of a conversation with Mum today. And, after I took her out to the grocery, we had a conversation about paying bills by cash or by cheques. Yes, no, yes in just over a minute... and she got POd at herself. Similar happens pretty much every day. Just getting her to tell me if she did like the seafood chowder is a chore. She did like it... of course >;). Patience IS love and that is what it is all about. Love to you and yours. And to all the crew and beyond.

Reading through all the above posts, so difficult to send love to each and everyone by name..........so love to each and everyone, but very special thoughts and prayers to Nigel, without him the Rainbow would never have set sail and all these lovely people would be adrift on an ocean with no fellow sailors to hold them in their hearts.

Mother has been very ill again this last few days, chest condition worsening and the wrong antibiotics caused an upsetting tummy problem. But today she has bounced back although the Dementia has      gone down another level, very first time she was very angry and waved her fist at me. Pure frustration at our ability to not understand what she was trying to say!

Was really looking forward to going to Essex Girls bar b q on Sunday in London, but I really don't think we will be able to go, maybe I should organise another of our garden " House concerts"

Sailing on,

Love and peaceful thoughts

I located St Vincents Hospital in Erie yesterday, and sent an e-card to Dan. Heard last night, after getting home from a gig, that it had reached him.

It's odd, isn't it? I'm a fairly rational kind of guy - don't believe in second sight or ghosts or mystical things, and I'm pretty grounded most of the time. But I'd been musing on the good people who rarely post or don't post at all on Mudcat these days, and my thoughts turned, among others, to Dan. He'd recently sent me a wrist watch as a present and simultaneously arranged for an old WW2 military chronograph to be mended by our Amish friend Mahlon.

Then, for no reason whatsoever, I opened this thread - which I've never looked at before - out of curiosity. Lo and behold - there was the recent news of Dan! I'm still pretty rational and grounded - but a big thanks to Coincidence, in all its shapes and forms, for getting the news to me!

Well put, Janie. I think I'm in the "... choppy white caps and dangerous shoals..." quadrant. With Ann away in NC, I'm not doing very well. An overwhelming depression has robbed me of any creative inclinations. It's now more than two months since I wrote a single note of Music. Ann returns this coming Friday. She'll find our house clean & tidy...I have managed to achieve that at least. Suffering from Diabetes & PMR, leaves me wasted & very debilitated. That's largely the genesis of the depression, in addition to which I feel guilty because I have not been able to offer the level of support several of our Crew members (and friends of Crew members) so desperately need. I should stop now...I'm in real danger of drowning in my own self-pity. Janie's last words above speak for me too: "Life. Eh? Glad to have all of you with whom to share the journey".
                                          With Love to You All,

Thanks for the heads-up re: Al's wife, gnu. I had stopped checking that thread.

On board ship, it seems, when one turns through a full 360 degrees, all manner of weather and seas - the gamut from sunny and blue and fair, to sweltering doldrums, to choppy white caps and dangerous shoals, to raging storms.

Life. Eh? Glad to have all of you with whom to share the journey.

If anyone gets news of Dan, please post it here - as I'm sure someone will. He's been a wonderful friend to me, both with music and with our mutual love of old pocket watches and wristwatches. The "Old Pocket Watches" thread seems very empty without him - and England's a long way off from where he is.

And, yes, best wishes to Big Al and his wife as well.

Dan? THE man. The guy goes out of his way to be nice to people he has never met in 3D. No shit. No flies. Just a great guy. I am primed to cheer for the Chicago Blackhawks so, maybe I shouldn't but I wanna let people know how good a man he is. He knew from my posts that I was a true New England Patriots fan (Yankee football... best 'foot'ball in the world) and then... this arrived in the mail.

I expect it will be awhile before Dan is up to attending, much less responding to posts. Hoping and expecting the surgery went well, but as Pat already noted, the recovery time is long and the anesthesia for this surgery is deep and can take quite a long time from which to recover.

Up Dan! Up Spaw!

I think I have finally found a bonafide starling/grackle proof suet feeder! I know they have to eat also, but they are such gluttons I can't afford it!

Doesn't take much to make me happy.

Thinking of Dan & Spaw & feeling greatly frustrated by the miles that separate us. The geography is daunting, but in no way is my love & compassion diminished.

"Feels good and hopeful." Feels good to read that.

Thinking of Dan.

I've just send an e-card to Dan via the hospital's e-card service. Has anyone gotten an update- while preserving his privacy, of course. Spaw darlin'? (And how be ye, Spaw?)

Janie- Good for you. Growth does take time and energy, eh? Love to you.

Up ye all and joy to crew and visitors to this watery thread.
Maeve.

I'm finally beginning to embrace where I am now.

One can not embrace where one is now until one has grieved what one chose to leave. I knew that, but did not expect it to take so long.

Feels good and hopeful.
