Overdue messages to Dear Friends...
Janie, please do whatever you can to divest yourself of your psychic guilt. Your Sister's efforts on your behalf are clearly born from the love she feels for you & I'd bet my bottom dollar that you do things for her that she can't do. She sounds like a one in a million type of Sister to me & betting that old bottom dollar again, I bet she feels the same about you.

Wendy, your Mother's letter was a joy to read. These touchingly personal insights into the lives of our elder relatives are so precious; an intimate window into a time of fear & uncertainty. I may be wrong, but I think we've largely lost the gentle tenderness with which these letters were written. For sure, circumstance played it's part, but these gems from the past can still inform our present & who knows, guide our future.

Maeve, thank you for being You.
                                                 With Love to You All,
                                                                               Nigel

Nigel, thank you for saying mum's letter was a joy to read. As you know she has over 200 that she wrote to my father in the war. They are all very beautifully written and certainly reflect the life of a 19 year old through to VE day when she was 22. I love hand written letters but they are very rare in these days of e mail and Face book. However I believe this thread reflects generosity and kindness of spirit thanks to Jane!

I often look at my mother's letters on the date in the month they were written, picking snowdrops in the woods, waving bombers off on their missions, precious leave taken back home in London, waiting and worrying for the precious blue airmail letters to arrive from my father. Some are really funny, the day she rode an old boneshaker RAF bicycle into the village ( first time on a bike) met a herd of sheep being driven up the hill. Mum had no idea how to brake so turned a swift left and landed up in a hedge, still upright and seated but most worried about the ladders in her stockings!

It comforts me to think of the feisty young Waaf when I watch the dear 91 year old who can no longer speak and is in a world of her own, so near and yet so far.

fondest love to all

Wendy xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
PS Billy has just phoned from the hospital, blood count perfect, next appointment 4 months , Hooraa!!

"... blood count perfect, next appointment 4 months , Hooraa!!"

GREAT news!

Unfortunately, I have some sad advice. Knock off the cell phones... BRIEF emergency use ONLY! Some of you know of my tumour which was successfully removed. Cousin Rodney wasn't as lucky. He died early this morning despite the best teams in Moncton and at NY State University Medical School. Even the Chemo injections came from Switzerland.

PLEASE do not post condolences... just remember that cell phones kill.

Wendy, those letters are a precious gift, not just to you, but to all of us of younger generations and offer such insight. So grateful to you for occasionally sharing some of them here with us. When the time comes, I hope you consider having them published, or at least donated and safely archived for the rich history and insight they offer.

Glad to hear such good news re billybob.

No condolences, gnu, per your request, but can I send a hug to you on general principle?

Hope chicks are pippin and the fiddleheads are starting to decorate the landscape in Maine, maeve.

Thinking about the great web of life and the turning of the earth. Those of us north of the equator are watching as the earth awakens again from winter death, dormancy and rest, while those south watch as the big winter sleep approaches, and all of us witness the seasonal changing of the guard among the two-leggeds of the feathered variety. Even so, we all still sail along together.

Pretty awesome, and while I am not here as much, and don't often post when I am here, continue to be grateful for your fellowship.

Nigel, I have probably missed updates and am sorry if I am asking for old news, but wondering about the adventures of your granddaughter and her companions?

If you read the obit, you'll see that Rodney "drove truck" for a long time, during which he was mostly entertained by talking to anyone who had the time. The last ten years, as also explained, were a difficult time. ******* cell phones!

More overdue messages to Dear Friends...
gnu...sincere thanks for your lovely post following my 'Jane's Bench' post. Ann & I & the Grandchildren too can, most of the time, talk about Jane/Mum/Mummy without shedding tears...I guess we've made some progress with our grieving. Thrilled to bits to hear about your blood work...great news. Saddened to hear about Rodney's death & alarmed to read your caveat about cell phones. There was a huge debate in the UK some years back about the radiation dangers of the ubiquitous 'mobile'. All the service providers claimed there was no hard, scientific evidence...the Government made it's usual wifty wafty utterances & the usage dangers have drifted off into the ether. One story sticks in my mind...the one about cooking an egg if you placed it between two, active cell phones. Never did get to find out the truth/accuracy of that one...from what you've been saying, maybe there's more than a grain of truth after all.
Janie...no, you haven't missed anything vital about our 'Travelling Twosome'. They are currently in Florida, prior to making their way north, up the east coast to spend some time with Jane's Sister, who lives in Charlotte NC. They fly home from NYC on 1st June. 'Homesick' is a word that has begun to appear in their emails. You said above that you were: "...grateful for your fellowship". I couldn't agree more; the Fellowship of The Rainbow (Fellow...ship!) is something without which my life would be all the poorer.
          With Love to You All,

Good to read posts from so many longtime Rainbow sailors.

(Nigel thanks...and I believe gnu's post was referring to Wendy's update on Billy's bloodwork. :) )

Janie, one wee banty hen has just gone into her broody trance, so I've given her 4 little eggs to hatch. We've been clearing estates and planting replacement trees in the orchard- we lost two family members and many fruit trees this winter.

Wendy- The letters are treasures far beyond the intense family connections. Thank you.

Maeve, thank you...one of my rare 'oops!' moments. I completely missed the quotation marks.
Our Granddaughter & her friend arrive in Charlotte today (Saturday 16th May). They're moving north west quicker than we had realised.
16th May is also Ann's birthday. Lunch at our favourite restaurant in Southend-On-Sea with the three Grandchildren (they're practically Grandadults!) who are still in the UK!

So sad that I couldn't attend the wake... many stories accompanied by beverages and his brothers Charlie (guitar, vocals) and Jim (fiddle, vocals) played upbeat Irish Trad until the last song which, of course, was The Parting Glass... not a dry eye in the house (or haus as the building is part of the winery owned by his partner Elke... I think that's how her name is spelled... who came from Germany many years ago with her parents).

I was saddened that there was no eulogy (Perhaps something to do with the wake? Ya knows the Irish, eh?). Sad for the obvious reason and because I had to refuse being a pall bearer because I knew I wouldn't be able to stand at the back of the church during a eulogy. I was offered a chair option but that wasn't a good idea for reasons I won't get into. Big crowd, especially considering the obit wasn't in the newspaper until this AM and it didn't even mention the funeral mass. Odd but there it is.

By way of redress...apologies to Wendy for missing the excellent news about BB's blood-work; a really positive marker that progress continues. Forever may it remain so.
Gnu, I'm saddened to read that you were not able to participate as fully as you would've liked at Rodney's funeral & wake. I can't say whether the absence of a eulogy is typical or not. Even as a non-believer, I have frequently appreciated a well written & delivered eulogy. Quite how I would cope at an Irish Wake as a teetotaller I really can't imagine! No condolences, but special thoughts, nonetheless.

I have been thinking a great deal recently about the growing list of Dear, Trusted Friends I've got to know through this thread in particular & Mudcat, in general. Dear, Trusted Friends who, I will almost certainly never meet, face to face. Maybe one day.........
                                                With Love,
                                                                Nigel.

Nigel, the Irish people I know are fond of tea, and there might be sparkling soft drinks and juices available which could be mixed with alcohol but could also be drunk plain. And there's always tap water. I do drink alcohol, but not when I'm driving, and I go almost everywhere alone, so I've had lots of experience with this!

Last year a fellow musician in our local Songwriters group gave me the honor of singing one of his (many, excellent) songs with him in our concert. I sang it alone on Sunday, to this same friend as he is dying of a brain tumor. I'll sing for him again tonight with the folk chorus to which I've belonged more than twenty years.

Hard work, this- and full of grace.

gnu- You know what's in my heart for you. Blessings.

Thank you, friends. The speaking is harder than the singing for me, for I've learned to breathe for singing. My friend responded very well to hearing his song- facial movements are about all he can communicate with and he made the most of them. I gave him a copy of it to have by his bedside.

Harder for me was to sing our own Jean Ritchie's song "Now Is the Cool of the Day" to him while he wept. I suspect it was the beauty of song and lyrics along with his unquenched desire to sing that caused the tears, but no way to know.

Our choral singing awoke strong emotions also, and I watched my friend raise his mostly unresponsive right arm (brain tumor, brain surgery, etc.) in response to one song in particular. His wife sitting close to him could hear him trying to sing at the same time.

A time of sorrow, a time of grace. I'll return as long as I'm wanted.

That's the rub- we are doing our best to meet our thoughts of his needs- we can only trust he knows our intent even though he can't use- or perhaps even think in- words. And that's the underlying reason I mention it here at all. Sometimes all we can do is try to understand a need and meet what we can of it in a loving, respectful and non-self-focused manner. It's a matter of faith in that mutual trust.

Many others are also ministering to my friend, most of all his wife. We can't fix what has happened, we can't remove the anger, fear, grief. We can walk alongside and witness the journey in companionship. We can offer our hearts in song and instrumental music. We can wipe away the tears while supporting the need to express feelings. We can laugh when it's natural to do so, and hold a hand when desired.

That's all.

Well said, Maeve. And well done as the doing continues. Realize the situations are probably different in many ways, but as the cancer spread in my Dad's brain and his ability to communicate and our ability to comprehend what he was communicating diminished, (and the morphine was upped to produce a coma-like state, it was still clear that the music mattered and that he knew and cherished and was comforted. Not only that, but took joy in it.

I suspect isn't trying to sing. He is singing.

Surrounding him, his wife and all of you who love him with light and love.

In the whole scheme of things not a big concern, but will still ask for healing thoughts for my Mom. As she notes, she is a tough old bird and among my sister, my nephews and me we have the bases covered, but no fun not being very ambulatory, and at an age when having to rely unequally on assorted joints to compensate for injuries to others can cause problems. Mom took a hard fall last weekend in a parking lot leaving a theatrical production. Sprained her left ankle, broke her right knee cap, has a sprained thumb and a black eye.

The sprain is more problematic than the broken kneecap in terms of ambulating, and she says that if she were still a working stiff, she would be taking ugly leave rather than sick leave due to the black eye.

Sis had had driven down here from Maryland on Saturday, to continue her remarkable efforts to help me with home maintenance and repair. She headed up to WV on Sunday to tend to Mom, and I head up on Friday to relieve her. My oldest nephew who lives with her is gone on a very rare vacation to Arizona but will be back by Tuesday and I will head back home and back to work on Wednesday. My youngest nephew, who happens to be a physician, is also attentive but has a busy work schedule plus two preschool kids. He is managing the medical pieces. Mom has had some joint surgeries and other health issues that could be problematic but have not been so far, and it is a huge relief for us non-medical folks to know he is on top of those potential issues and communicating with her doctors, a huge relief and help for us non-medical ignoramuses.

As I read through what I have written, realize it is not so much about asking for good thoughts for my aged mother as it is an expression of gratitude.

Janie - Poor Mom! Glad she has all of you looking out for her.

I could use some hugs myself tonight. I have a young family member being used as a pawn between feuding parents and it ain't pretty and there isn't much I can do about it. Said young person has a much older sibling who is out of the house and trying to help, but is running into roadblocks. I just wish people would put the needs of the children first. My heart is breaking for the poor kid.

Sending love to Maeve,Janie and Tami and through them to their loved ones who need our Rainbow magic!Just reminds us how wonderful it is to be able to come here and share our joys, fears and sorrows.

Some more good news from me, my daughter ( very ill since August last) gave in to my nagging and saw a consultant privately on Monday. She, the consultant, was very cross that Sam had been so badly let down by our local hospital. She has arranged for an MRI and other tests to be done asoon as possible on the NHS!! Also says Sam is a suitable candidate for a new treatment that is very expensive and probably the local hospital didn't want to fund? So fingers crossed once again.

I must say that the same hospital is where Billy has had such wonderful care and treatment over the past 7 years but in a different department, so praise where it is deserved!

sending love to all

The only resolution for him, I fear, will be when he turns 18 in two years and a month. In the meantime, I will support him as much as I am able without getting either him or the non-custodial parent in hot water with the custodial parent.

In other happier news, my beloved nephew Austin, aka The Bean, will graduating from high school in two weeks and I will be flying down to Kentucky to see it happen. Where did the years go?! Seems like just yesterday he was a toddler...

Much here on which to reflect...much here that is deserving of comment, which, as so often happens, has been covered by others, far more eloquently & profoundly than I could ever manage. All of which is not helped by the fact that I'm writing this, wallowing in self-pity...PMR out of whack...Diabetes out of whack...Osteopenia causing more problems than I was ever led to believe it would & steroids, don't get me started on steroids! I'm trying to compose my way out of this 'slough of despond' with mixed results...little finesse, loud, rough 'n' ready...a brass player's/percussionist's dream. It's interesting how the internalised anger finds it's way to my hands...not just a case of physically striking the keys harder, but also the harmonic choices...more dissonance; melodies more angular & abrasive. If I get this piece finished, it's going to need as much editing as it did composing. An appropriate working title could be: "Rant for Orchestra".
Forgive me...I'm in an awkward frame of mind.
                                                                                 With Love to You All,
                                                                                                                Nigel

Sorry to hear of your woes, Nigel. I'm glad to hear "Rant for Orchestra" is of some solace. Great title, BTW.

here's also hoping that the orchestral rant relieves some of the pressure as you express yourself through music.   and for an easing of the ailments.    blessings all    pete.

Aw, Nigel, it often seems like when one body system gets off-balance, it starts knocking down others. I wish this wasn't happening to you, but since it is, this is the place to come, as you well know.

"Rant for Orchestra"--hmm, the title makes me smile, but the sound of the music might make me frown! Any cymbals clashing in that piece?

Dear friends,

Art Thieme has died. He lived every minute to its fullest. There's a thread upstairs. Thoughts for his best friend and love, his wife Carol.

Maeve

Some love-filled musings...gnu: I might just abbreviate the title to 'Rant', which suddenly reminds me, I used to play a tune called 'The High Level Rant' on Mandolin, back in my Halliard days. Thanks for the kind thoughts.
Dean: you're right, I am a compulsive apologist. You'd think, after all we've shared on The Rainbow that I could open my heart, guilt-free. I promise, next time I'm feeling so beset, I'll just say what's on my mind, no apologies for doing so. I'm fairly certain that will be a first for me...real progress.
Pete: Yes, the composing has helped to ease the pressure. My thinking is now more preoccupied with the 'Musical Behemoth' I'm creating...anger redefined!
ChanteyLass: I'm pleased I made you smile, but whether you'd enjoy listening to the finished piece, I'm not so sure! Yes, there are clashing cymbals & some mighty hits on a Tam Tam. It's something akin to Hans Zimmer meets John Cage!
Janie: I'm sure I've said this before, but you have the uncanny knack of finding 'le chanson juste'. The alternative title: 'Ludwig's Song' says it all for me. Of all the Classical composers, Beethoven is the man I admire the most. I studied his life & music. Taught some of his music to eager students. Not only do you bring me Beethoven, but Joni Mitchell too, the singer/songwriter I admire the most. Beautifully poetic lyrics, carried on a complex, compelling melody & the arrangement is wonderfully idiosyncratic. No one writes like Joni...she's in a league of her own. "Shake your fist at lightening. Roar like forest fire. The gift goes on". I need those words, writ large, on every wall, in every room of my house.
A simple "Thank you" to you all, conceals a greater love.

Our 'Travelling Twosome' fly back into the UK on Tuesday, after two days sightseeing in NYC. I think there will inevitably be a period of 'readjustment', fitting back into the home routine. After roughly three months of new sights, sounds, food & culture; dear old London Town is going to feel so mundane. I'm very relieved that we didn't have to call on any of you to provide emergency bed & board, but it was most reassuring to know there was a veritable army of Folk, willing to help, had the need arisen...thank you, All.
                                              With Love,
                                                             Nigel & Ann

What a wonderful and educational trip save that early "glitch" which was, in a way, educational albeit very upsetting.
