At 'Spaw's suggestion, some of Katlaughing's ashes will be sent to me by Roger for several reasons, and one of those reasons and responsibilities is to represent those who participate here, in Jane's Rainbow, whether they may participate by posting, by reading, or by focused caring attention of one or more of us who participate by posting.

I lovingly reject Spaw's characterizing me as executive officer of this thread. We are a versatile and flexible crew, all concerned with community and caring, and clearly I am one in a chorus - one of many at the oars or manning the sails.

Addressing what I have been charged to undertake on behalf of "Jane's Rainbow," please share with me via pm any words, poems, songs, gestures, you want to contribute when I scatter the ashes of Kat with which I am charged on behalf of all of us. I don't know exactly when or where that will happen but will keep you posted.

I came to Mudcat in the fall of 2002. I haven't gone back to research the early, formative days and years that forged Mudcat into the community it became - wasn't really aware there was at one time controversy -or a back story - to threads such as this. I doubt I ever will research it unless I have to time to explore the sociological evolution of Mudcat. Remember, Mudcat was also there on the early frontier of social networking. Obviously, though, this thread wouldn't be here were it not for Kat's advocacy early on.

Legacy.

Can't beat that, Peter!

Sad news above the line - another long time Mudcatter who hadn't been around for a while has died. I didn't know karen k well, but always looked forward to seeing her at Getaways and she was one of those lovely positive presences on Mudcat and so supportive of others in the folk music world of the Northeast USA.

Will the crew join me in a simple and peaceful chorus to sing....

May the long time sun shine upon you
All love surround you.
And the pure light within you
Guide your way on.

Hey Wendy, I'm expert at opening champagne. I'm on my way.

Tip: Put a tea towel over the cork, grip it tight and turn the bottle (rather than the cork) on a hard surface - like a kitchen worktop. The friction of the bottom of the bottle turning on the surface keeps the champagne calm, so no wasteful spray.

Juneau, in southeastern Alaska, has a lot of gray days. I deal with them very well by considering them 'silver' days. The sun isn't far away, after all- only about a mile - straight up. (UP, Spaw!)

Yeah, I could use a cup. Feeling pretty fair on this gray day. I always liked gray days.....Tom Paxton wrote a good one about them......Just because it isn't bright doesn't mean things are bad.....

Even a gray day,
with a cold wind,
Train late again
Even a gray day,
is a good day now.

Even a black night,
with a hard rain,
With plans down a drain,
Even a black night,
is a good night now.

Fresh out of answers, I threw in my hand
Stood with my back to the wall
But thanks to your kindness that I understand
That it could have been no life at all

Now even a hard time,
with a thin shoe,
And my bills coming due,
Even a hard time,
is a good time now.

Yes even a weekend,
in a strange town,
And the snow comin' down,
Yes even a weekend,
is a good friend now.

Fresh out of answers, I threw in my hand.
Stood with my back to the wall.
But thanks to your kindness that I understand,
That it could have been no life at all

Now even a gray day,
with a cold wind,
My train late again,
Even a gray day,
is a good day now.
Even a gray day,
is a good day now.

Best to all the crew and let's hear some of the latest news huh?

14C at 5AM! Oh, how I love August. The last full moon, I knew it was gonna stay hot or not. NOT! LOVELY NOT HOT! Now, twas 30C yesterday but the humdiddly was near 45% and there was a slight breeze. Tolerable while in the shade. Even mowed the two front lawns at 7PM and didn't work up much of a sweat although I took about 6 breaks to stretch and calm my aching back. Forecast highs are 21 to 24C (but more humid) for the next 7... I love NOT HOT August.

I wish NOT HOT for all in the good ship. While you are all on my mind, foremost at this very instant is Max. I soooo want an update but I know it will come and I pray it's positive. If you happen to read this, Max... thanks... yer one a the good guys.

That is awesome, Pat. What an amazing way to deal with her ashes...that way she gets to go to where she could not in life, and be a big part of the earth. Thank you for letting us know.

In spite of the pain...the sorrow...the heart break of loss....this is still the best bloody thread I have seen here in a long time. This is what the cat has always been about.

Big smiles, Spawzer. I'll be at the Getaway and now know to get in touch with Rita and Bill. Don't know what they may have in mind, but could definitely get into going out into the bay in a kayak, if that is appropriate.

Keep us posted when the numbers come in from your latest bloodwork, Darlin' 'Spaw.

VT, may you have moments of joy and contentment, and days that you can hold onto to get you through days that don't seem worth holding onto.

Essentially the same thing, Pete, with somewhat less pressure, more service and significantly less management responsibilities, and able to work 40-50 hours instead of 50-65 hours per week - at a substantial cut in pay. But I only made the decent wage for a few years and had not got used to it, and in my field and at my age, I am very fortunate to have secured another job. I know a lot of folks in my sector who are out of work. Somehow, over the past several years I have managed to keep landing on my feet - this job does not necessarily qualify as "sticking the landing," but I definitely need to work for a pay check for at least another 4 years. After that, I can bring enough in from my private practice to adequately subsidize retirement income for as long as the brain cells function well enough.   I have much for which to be thankful. Lots of folks in my field are out of work and unable to find work.

All this is minor stuff compared the life-endangering issues folks deal with here.

Somebody lead us in a chanty now, to get these sails up to take advantage of a fair wind.

Damn! Another flood of tears! What a great thing to do... send her ashes hither and yon. Brilliant idea as they say across the pond. What an idea! We have a law here that says ya gotta pay a load of money to a funeral home fer a coffin in which you have be creamated and then these ashes must be buried at a graveyard at expense. Arrogant and insulting $ grabbers.

My creamation will be paid for by Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS. I hope I get cut up and experimented upon by a, nay, a number of, female med students. After all, I will already be a stiff.

Yes, that is TERRibly crass and PI. What's yer point?

Glad to hear things are as normal as can be expected, Spaw.

Gee....LOTS of good news floating by right now! I have been checking in but just haven't posted much. I was pretty well gobsmacked over kat's death and my functioning level was below par.

I want to thank all of you and my many other friends on the 'Cat for the calls and PM's and notes of personal encouragement. Kat and I were very close.......I am happy to tell you also that kat will be going a few places now. Roger decided to send her ashes to friends in all those places she wanted to go but never got there. I have Bill and Rita taking some to the Getaway of course and more going to England and Micca. Some will go to the Maine bunch where she had many friends and some will go to Heather Fielding. Some are going to OZ with Sandra and Freda handling that. I imagine we might find a few more places but I think that's about right for doing what she wanted.

I'm doing the chemo recovery week and it is about right on schedule. Just about back to whatever normal is anymore. The port made a lot of difference and once again thanks for the UPS!!!!!

I love you all and I love this journey we are on together. So glad Freda has come aboard. Did anyone tell her about the first month of kitchen duty?

Spaw
