Oh, thanks for adding that, Masato, I had forgotten that was where I had first heard the Billy Murray. The Blue Sky Boys, of course, I have been listening to what seems forever now. I think it is the standard by which all the others should be measured.

Probably first recorded by Billy Murray & Irving Kaufman in 1916. Different than the BSB, but good.

Subject: Lyr Add: ARE YOU FROM DIXIE? (Yellen, Cobb)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 28 Feb 04 - 09:52 PM

From the sheet music at Duke University's 'Historic American Sheet Music' collection:

ARE YOU FROM DIXIE? ('CAUSE I'M FROM DIXIE TOO)
Words, Jack Yellen. Music, George L. Cobb. 1915.

Hello, there, stranger! How do you do?
There's something I'd like to say to you.
Don't be surprised.
You're recognized.
I'm no detective but I've just surmised,
You're from the place where I long to be.
Your smiling face seems to say to me
You're from my own land,
My sunny homeland.
Tell me, can it be?

CHORUS: Are you from Dixie?
I said, from Dixie,
Where the fields of cotton beckon to me.
I'm glad to see you.
Tell me, how be you,
And the friends I'm longing to see?
If you're from Alabama, Tennessee or Caroline,
Any place below the Mason-Dixon line,
Then you're from Dixie.
Hurray for Dixie!
'Cause I'm from Dixie, too!

It was away back in eighty-nine,
I crossed the old Mason-Dixon line.
Gee! But I've yearned,
Longed to return,
To all the good old pals I left behind.
My home is way down in Alabam'
On a plantation near Birmingham,
And one thing's certain:
I'm surely flirtin'
With those southbound trains. CHORUS

Grandpa Jones & Merle Travis

[S: Strum]
[S:D] Hello there stranger!
How do you do? [S:D] [S:D] [S:D] [S:D]
[D] There's something I'd like to say to you
Now [A7] dont' be surprised, you're recognized
I'm [S:A7] no detective, but I [S:A7] just surmised
That [D] you're from the place where I long to be
You're smilin' face seems strange to me You're from [A7] my homeland, sunny homeland
Now [S:A7] tell me [S:A7] can it [S:A7] be? [S:A7] [S:A7] [S:A7]

[A7] That you're from [D] Dixie?
I said from [G] Dixie
Where the [D] fields of cotton beckon to me
I'm glad to see you
Tell me how [G] be you?
And the [E] friends I'm longin' to [A7] see?

Are you're from [S:D] Alabama
[S:D] Tennessee or [S:'D] Caro-[S:D] line [S:] [S:] [S:]
[S:G] Any place be-[S:G] low
The [S:G] Mason-[S:G] Dixon [S:D] Line [S:D] [S:D] [S:D]
Are you from Dixie
I said from [G] Dixie
'Cause [D] I'm from [A7] Dixie, [D] too.

Well, it was a-way back in '89
I crossed that old Mason-Dixon line
Gee, but I've yearned, longed to return
To that old place that I left behind;

My home is way down in All-er-bam'
On an old plantation near Birmin'ham
There's one thing certain, I'm always flirtin'
With those south-bound trains ...

That run to Dixie
I said to Dixie
Where the fields of cotton beckon to me
I'm glad to see you
Tell me, how be you? And the friends I'm longin' to see?

Are you from Alabama, Tennessee or Caroline
Any place below the Mason-Dixon Line
Are you're from Dixie
I said from Dixie
'Cause I'm from Dixie, too.

Sheet music at Dukecopyright 1915 by Jack Yellen & George Cobb. Slow loading, but quality is worth the wait. You can also find it at Levy, but their images are of a lower quality.

I could send you a Mediaring accapella version of the tune if you have Mediaring, Shale. There may be more verses that I don't know.
