I first went there when it was held in the Stork and Castle, the resident band was the Fettlers. There was another club at the Kings Head, I think resident band Creel. I seem to remember they were both packed each week. Happy days

no,the whole family was not banned, only certain members.
I think Ken and Pat were considered kosher, in fact it may have been that they were banned twice,
Graham, Graeme?was certainly involved on one occasion, anyway they should not have been banned in the first place, poor old graeme, was so far up his own backside, he could not see the wood from the trees. all we need now is V

I thought it was Megan the then landlady of the Sun who did the dirty deed, and don't recall it being over drinking up time, but something else all together different. This was back in the seventies and you can be sure that she soon allowed them back in(after the profits started to fall) they were very good supporters of the club in those days, and still attend every now and then.

it was a whim of the then barman Graham, as I recall, if I recollect correctly and I may be am not[it was a long time ago].
it was over an argument about drinking up quickly at the end of the night.
Graham was happy enough to sell pints, but wanted to get out of the pub and clean up his glasses prompto, there was an impolite exchange of words and the rest is history.

JHW..."down an alley then upstairs somewhere to the right" sounds like the The Black Lion, home to the Club for a while in '69 - '70.

John Lawson is putting together a brief history of Stockton Folk Club and would love to receive readers' recollections of the people and places involved. Contact via the website at www.stocktonfolk.org.uk or by popping into The Sun Inn on a Monday night.

JHW....... "where you went down an alley" - then go to the LEFT -(same level) Fabulous Bass beer an' all. Flat head - wonderful taste. Well done Ron. great musician and song writer. Apart from all his well known stuff I enjoyed his "Town Hall Millionaire" Still true today.
I also remember the Wilsons getting "Barred out" by one barman ,of dear me,what a great place it has been.

What was the name of the pub where you went down an alley then it was upstairs somewhere to the right? (All that area of Stockton was flattened for shops long since).

Yes, Johnny Handle started the Stockton Club in the King's Head in 1962 while working at ICI. In his account this was in April but 10th, 20th and 30th anniversaries were all celebrated in March so there is a small doubt about the date.
Johnny was also involved in setting up the club at The Bridge in Newcastle four years earlier.

Barnsley folk club has been in existence for very many years too!

I can trace back to around 1970 but I do know it was there at a number of venues such as The Alhambra pub and the Wheatsheaf Hotel and The King George in Barnsley I will put on fb

According to Ron's intro to Sitting In The Sun (published for the 30th anniversary) it looks like it was founded in March 1962, so the answer seems to be yes!
