Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 21 Jan 12 - 02:46 PM Hey Bruce and Hawk, Sorry I didn't get back on this thread, to answer you, last night, but I was putting together another YouTube video, for you two(was up till 4:33 AM)!%^!$%^%#@%@I%^#I^!!!.....when the computer froze. So, I'm going to put together some tunes for you(The video had about 5-6 on it), so in case you wanted to do a music project, you'd have a better taste of more possibilities. One song, though, I promised Little Hawk first dibs on it. We just have had a helluva time getting it through the mail, and him being able to open it. It was easier when I'd send files, via Yahoo Messenger. So when I get these done, I'll load it up to YouTube, but they will be 'Private'....to limit the public exposure, at this time. They are vocals (female)..except for Little Hawk's. I was thinking, we could continue to use this thread, if you want, but I wasn't wanting to usurp Bruce's subject, with yakking about these other tunes. Little Hawk started one up titles "Calling GfS", if you wanted to use that one...OR...we can use this one. It's up to whatever you want to do. Anyway, I'll be gone most of the day, but I WILL be back, later...hopefully with some 'new'(?) material for your review. OK? Warmest Regards......and Little Hawk, you've been a Great Friend! Love ya'!..........(That's only cause, you're 'clear') GfS P.S. Oh shit, I forgot to post the 'Ten Commandments for Musicians'..hold on, I'll get it................>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...... "Ten Commandments for Musicians" I AM the heart and soul within you, You shall not imitate other player's licks, or singer's voices, thinking they are better than your heart! You shall not sing from your heart in vain, nor in vanity. You shall not make yourself an idol, in your own eyes, nor for anyone else. You shall not bear false witness to how much you know about anything, therefore blocking new input. You shall take breaks, and use that time to focus, and not ask people 'Did you like it?' (Besides, you might want to give the audience a break, from putting up with you, ...for not obeying the first three!) Honor sound, and your tunings. You can always tell a 'purist', they're always out of tune! It shows arrogance. (See 1, 2, and 3). Thou shall not murder your partners, by drowning them out! BLEND!! Nor shall you be suicidal, and proud of it! Thou shall not commit adultery, or wish for it, as a reward for a good gig. When you have that much to learn, your music isn't saying much from the heart! (See 1,2,and 3.) Thou shall not steal licks, and then announce A 'NEW ORIGINAL SONG' you just wrote. If stealing is in your heart, please don't play, or sing!…Matter of fact, SHUT UP! Thou shall not covet thy neighbor's ax. The right sound is in your head, and heart, so get the right instrument that lets you speak the TRUTH...not that you got a 'prestigious' ax, to impress people, that if you were any good, you'd be able to afford it. (See 1,2,and 3.) Sub-part B: Thou shall not fear, nor have bad attitudes about sound equipment, nor processors. If you don't think you're dealing with sound, shut up, and don't play! Thou shall not precede a song with lengthy 'histories' of how you came to write it...just play it. If it is interesting, someone will ask you about it. They came to hear music, not how 'special' you think you are! (See 1,2, and 3.) Thou shall use anything you need to make the song sound the way you hear it....the audience will be the judge of your 'taste'. If you play stoned, remember, to YOU the song may FEEL great, even if the notes are all wrong! Learn the discipline of FOCUS instead! Thou shall PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, so when you perform, you can listen and speak to God, with your heart, and not be 'SELF-conscious', but 'GOD conscious'. Those who commit the sin of SELF consciousness, shall make mistakes. Your PRACTICE will set you're abilities free! Let your mind and heart be upon God, and let Him play through you. (See 1,2,and 3.) Play to God, thanking Him for HIS gift to you. The audience is only your witness, and they'll think its to them, and then you bring them with you....and remember, WE ARE ONE Guest from Sanity OK..there it is..it works, too! |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile From: Little Hawk Date: 24 Jan 12 - 05:34 PM Cool! I'll watch for that, GfS. Okay, Bruce, I put the Martin in dropped D and learned your song today. And what a great song it is! I figure to play it tonight at one of the local song circles and tell them, "This is by my friend, Bruce Murdoch." I can hardly wait... |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Jan 12 - 01:02 AM I'm back. I played your song at the Red Roof Studio tonight, just a few miles from here, and gave it my very best and it was well received. Managed to get through it without mistakes. It's a very nice song to play, works great, nice chord changes and melody, and it sounds wonderful in the dropped D tuning, which I gather is how you are doing it? Boy, now I've got to see if I can learn some of the other songs on the CD too. I'm going to keep on playing "I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile" and make it a regular feature in my sets, cause it is too good a song to just do now and then. And I will always make sure people know it's a Bruce Murdoch song. Now, there's a man you might remember who comes out to these things at the Red Roof. His name is Mike Cavendish. He used to run the Village Corner Coffeehouse in Toronto in the very early 60s. He said he went to a show at Le Hibou Coffeehouse in Montreal in the early 60s...the Greenbriar Boys were playing...and he said he remembers you being there on that night and that he'd seen you here and there back in those days. Do you remember him? He's a really tall man of about 76, was a good boxer in his youth, must've been a strapping fellow back then. Mike is an interesting man with many anecdotes about the folk scene in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Jan 12 - 11:49 AM Not last night. I may get a video of me doing it at some point over at Doc's place. My voice is a little off right now, cos I had a cold for a week. I can sing allright...but not with full strength. I have to go easy on the top notes. |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile From: GUEST Date: 25 Jan 12 - 11:59 AM Watch your voice. At the age of twenty we could rest it for a day and get back at it. We ain't 20 anymore. Thanks very much, LH. BM |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 25 Jan 12 - 10:32 PM If you sing from your diaphragm, and resonate in your 'mask',(the region around the front of your face), and NOT use your 'throat voice', you should NOT have ANY problems with your singing voice!! The monsters of singing know this. With a little practice and discipline..this not only will be NO problem....but it is also CORRECT...and you should avoid EVER going hoarse, or hurting your vocal chords. If you need clarification about that, I would give a buzz to a school, and repeat what I just said, and ask the teacher, exactly to explain, and show you, what and how....if you have ANY questions. Love Ya'..God bless...and sing well! GfS |
Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile From: GUEST,lefthanded guitar Date: 26 Jan 12 - 03:39 PM I've had the pleasure and honor of hearing this fine song and the CD (from Bruce) some months ago and cannot get it out of my head, or heart EVER. This is one of those iconic classic songs that seems to have sprung into your life as naturally as the springtime blossoms- with a melody and lyrics and meaning the makes love sound new. There's a number of others on his CD that are as resonant and unforgettable (Anytime At All is a favorite of mine, incredibly beautiful, and it unfolds as a movie in your mind's eye) and I urge you to get his CD if you've never heard it.Bruce is a true gentleman with a heart and soul of gold, both in music and in life . |

Subject: RE: Bruce Murdoch: I'm at the Mercy of Your Smile From: Nigel Paterson Date: 30 Jul 12 - 05:14 AM Bruce sent me a copy of this wonderfully evocative album back in January, after my eldest daughter was diagnosed with terminal cancer. A selfless, caring act, which, as the months have rolled by, I've learned more & more, is typical of his love of life & his fellow wo/man. Whilst the Music can't cure my daughter's cancer, it certainly healed something within me. I love Bruce's Music, but I love The Man even more. Sincerely, Nigel. |
