Can anyone help? At last years Whitby festival we noticed a temporary camp site had been set up at the junction of Stakesby road and Love lane. Does anyone know who organises this or, more importantly, how to make a reservation.

That is the stewards and artistes camp site, at the Rugby Club.
It is only accessikble to ticket holders

Yes Moor & Coast are running the Temporary Campsite again at the Community College... (already taking bookings)... the campsite at the Rugby Club is for stewards, dance teams, artists and the like...

I am thinking of heading to Whitby for a few days, for the first time since i was 4 years old. The only accom still available and in my price range is the Moor and Coast campsite, or the YHA hostel by the abbey ruins. Since I'll be heading straight to towersey for more camping I quite like the idea of sleeping in a building - but which is more convenient for town?
I do have memories of Whitby but they extend to there being a large crane dredging the harbour, and my brother improvising bath toys for me, and aren't much use in logistical planning!

It may depend what you want to go to. A lot of the pub sessions are on the abbey side of the river. The dancing and Ceilidhs are in the Pavillion half way down the West Cliff.
All sorts on all over the town. Maybe the campsite is better, and less of a drag up all those steps at the end of the day - but you can't avoid hills at Whitby.

Hmm, probably looking more at the pub sessions so maybe the hostel would be better! But yes... 190 steps isn't it? Eesh...

I'm no use to you Jack - only going to be there for three nights.

Laura, have a look here at this Backpackers accomodation. I know a few folk who stay there but you might need to book up early.Its down by the river so no hills to climb.

Laura - Many years back the official Folk Week campsite was on farm fields behind the Abbey - about where the council car park has since been built. Obviously the YHA is closer.
I didn't find a late night trek up to the Abbey Plain a great hardship. The only effort was between the Duke of York and the top of the steps, all the rest of the journey was on the flat (not counting the downhill bit from a late night at the Spa). Personally I found that walking up the cobbled track next to the 199 steps was preferable, as I could choose the size of my own steps.

Steps don't scare me too much (I live in a very steppy city right now) so will probably go for that one, as was pointed out to me it will be the cosier option if the weather sets in!

We stayed at the Whitby backpackers last year. It's only a short walk along the river so no hills to walk up going back at night. Very popular though, so could already be full for FF week.

I recall one occasion MANY years back at the Whitby Backpackers (sure we called it something else back then), when Mrs Fox Whatsit got a bit annoyed to discover a post-midnight lime jelly cricket match in the car park...

The Youth hostel is actually very nice. Very good cafe -excellent breakfasts, afternoon tea,good home cooking, beer and wine on sale,nice comfy lounge, most rooms en suite - albeit YHA style. I've been there on two school residentials, and despite having to have a non - drinking week and climbing the steps at least once a day I really enjoyed the stay!

We have just released our reservation for a "cottage" (why call a flat a cottage?) for Folk Week, since we will not be going over the pond this summer. It is held by the Ingrid Flute Agency, so contact them if you are looking for a two bedroom flat near the hospital (a couple blocks from the train station) with a parking garage.
