Sister with serious medical problem is driving with friend (moving) and has been waltzing thru Texas, realizing she may not be 40 anymore.... yesterday the high winds got too hard to handle and they needed help finding a spot that still had rooms, when they could not wrestle the truck any farther. She's been a little cagey about her contingency plan.....

So I'm concerned that as she completes this trip over the next few days with some ambitious chunks of territory, she may not always be near a church or Red Cross chapter I can network her into, thru those lines of communication. I thought-- hm, MUDCAT?

I may not be where I can sign into PMs this afternoon for the next several hours/days. Email is better (motormice at hotmail.com).

Thanks for any help, prayers included,

~Susan

Pecos is good. There is a "gap" from Van Horn to El Paso that you don't want to find your self in when it is stopping time. That is the zone very near the border that is policed and patrolled heavily and stopping by the road and sleeping in ones car isn't a good idea. At. All. Think NarcoWar.

They're in NM now...

Arrrgh. Bowie is a cute little town, there are hotels and restaurants if she decides to stop for the night. Jumping off point to go to some great national park sites in the mountains south of there. But I digress. . . Willcox is a little bit bigger, the next town west of Bowie. By the time I cross the border into AZ I'm pretty well flying, knowing my destination (Tucson) is only a few hours down the road. But in a truck, don't let the cross-winds clobber you and don't try to keep up with the automobile traffic. If they get as far as Benson then it is a very easy drive to Tucson. There are any number of well-spaced towns from Tucson to the border, if they're taking I-8 to California. (8 splits off of 10 north of Tucson).

Anybody who is planning to move to Los Angeles or even LA County should reconsider.

Crime is so overwhelming in LA County that most reports are not even investigated.

I know a few places in Arizona which I can recommend, but by pm only.

Anybody who is planning.... She's moving there to help our brother take care of our sick mother. Bro has lived there for years and years, and knows where it is safe.

places in Arizona... I sent her Becky's number in case she needs AZ motel-finding help, but it is great to know there is more info if we need it, pdq. Thanks.

SRS, thanks, I'll pass that along if I hear from her before she blows thru AZ. They are back on the road now.

Does U-Haul come save you if their truck gets a flat? Or is that on the driver/AAA?

They don't make it well-known, but a State Farm Auto policy include free towing to the nearest place where you car/vehicle can be repaired.

Other insurance companies offer the same thing, so if there is trouble, call cops, insurance company, then friends and relatives, in that order.

I believe they made it to room reservations at Scottsdale.

She's hoping to arrive in LA today. Google says it's a 6-1/2 hour haul from Scottsdale, but they may be too tired to do it all in one shot...

I try to go through or into LA at about 3am. There is less traffic then. I hope they're headed to a fringe community and not actually into the heart of the place. It's bad enough in a car: in a U-Haul - oy.

I think you might have to buy extra roadside insurance from UHaul, but when there is something like a flat that is their equipment to fix, I'd guess. I have AAA and I cover my children with it as well. Even though they don't own cars, as passengers if they run into problems they can call for a tow truck or tire repair, etc. My daughter has had to use it a couple of times with the funky vehicles her roommates were driving at one point.

Anyway, LA is so large, if you can narrow it down we might be able to offer more observations (if not help). :)

Thanks. They know where they are going in LA, and how to get there.

I'm more concerned that drivers' energies may flag before they get there, given the medical sitch, and the two days of having had to punt.

No word so far today. I'll be away from the puder by the time I find out how they have progressed. But a good stopping point 2/3 of the way from Scottsdale to LA might be helpful in case they need it, and with the time difference I may be able to look back in here from Hardi's phone-- dunno, we are off on a hospital call now and those can get protracted.

I suggest you read, Devil in the White City before suggesting anonymous "sofa surfing" for your sister.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

It is better she go to the small-town police (they are nice) and request a jail-cell for the night...than freeze to death, in January, on the wide open prairee. If they refuse, break a window or piss on their door. Be arrested - but freeze no more.

Glad to hear they got there safely. I'm off tomorrow morning.

garg, they did it with motels, no need to rely on the kindness of (nonprofessional) strangers.
