Belated thanks to Jim McLean, who in this case seems more like a nom de plume for "Robert Burns."

"The last time I sang it "O Gin I Were a Barons Heir" was written by an North East" Yes you're right seemingly the words are traditional and not Burns so that was two on the list from last year that weren't Burns. Don't think there are non Burns this year. The list is Bonnie Lass of Ballochmyle;Ye Banks and Braes:Sweet Afton;Highland Lassie O;Green Grow the Rashes;John Anderson; Ca' the Yowes;Ae Fond Kiss;My Love is like a RRR and I'm doing The Gardener Wi His Paidle.

Damn it damn it damn it! It should have said westling winds. I blame it on using an iPad with predictive text (which I do not know how to turn off).

The last time I sang it "O Gin I Were a Barons Heir" was written by an North East composer whose name escapes me at the moment, it was probably Annon.
"Last May a Braw Wooer" has a bit of a swing to it.
"My Nannies Awa" for pathos.

Ae Fond Kiss is wonderful as is my favourite Lea Rigg mentioned above (hear Rod Paterson)
I'm hoping my month long cough might at last be gone today so I can sneak in somewhere tomorrow with a song or two.
My takes on Lady Mary Anne, The Young Highland Rover (another great melody) and Lizzie Lindsay can be heard here
using the little player thingy.

Been a few mentions of Ae Fond Kiss. For my money this is one of the greatest love songs ever written although it came from a period when Burns was in Edinburgh, mixing with the literati and getting far from his roots. He wrote it for Nancy McElhose who he called Clarinda in other poems.
The verse that always gets to me:

Had we never lov'd sae kindly,
Had we never lov'd sae blindly,
Never met - or never parted,
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.

How true!

Eddie

Apparently they liked us so much they wanted us back, so this year we're doing:
My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose
Parcel of Rogues
A Man's a Man for A' That
Green Grow the Rashes, Oh

They also want an instrumental set. We're just humble contra dance musicians when it comes ti instrumental music, so it'll be

Moon and 7 Stars/Jefferson&Liberty/ Hundred Pipers
Mairi's Wedding/ Road to Boston
Da Slockit Light
Flowers of Edinburgh/ Scully's Reel/ Farewell to Whiskey
Amelia

You're welcome to borrow this, if you think it would go down all right. I wrote it a few years ago, and it's almost entirely a true story that happened here on the Isle of Wight (except from the fish & chips). When I say I wrote it ... Robert himself wrote most of it; I just moved the lines around a bit ...

NOT AT THIS ADDRESS

Some hae meat and cannat eat;
We wad eat — the snag is,
We've booked the room, the piper too,
But somewan's swiped the haggis!

Noo, Burns nicht fare's nae skanking ware
(Whate'er they mean by a' that):
There's but wan pud that's any good
And bears the gree, and a' that.

Mrs Mac popped tae the butcher's shop
Tae place a timely order,
Tae provide her clients wi' the choicest viands
Available south o' the Border—

Tae sairve a meal wi' sic appeal
'Twould be be a nicht harmonious
For Sassenachs and Scots ex-pats—
A supper Caledonious.

But when she came tae fetch it hame
She was tell't it by the butcher:
Some scallywag had filled his bag
An' scarpered wi' the supper!

Could we mak' do wi' French ragout,
A curry or a balti?
They'd tak' a sneerin' scornfu' view
O' sic a spread sae faulty!

Ach, on the day we'll simply say:
We ken it isna cricket,
But we've sent oot for fish an' chips—
If ye dinna like it — stick it!

Although usually done slowly, have a listen at this version of "A Man's a Man" by Old Blind Dogs . They speed it up and follow it with a fast paced tune. That might be an option if you don't want to have two slow songs.

Just a reminder that the version of Tibbie Dunbar sung by the Dubliners (and others) from 1966 onwards was extended by myself by writing the second "half".

The Lea Rig is a lovely song but it's usually sung as quite a slow sombre love song. Certainly here in Scotland anyway! Scots Whae Hae is one that can be sung at widely varying tempos too.

I'm not sure if it's truly Burns, but there's an upbeat song called the Lea Rig that you might like. The tune I know is jaunty.

Great ideas! Maryrrf, I'm leaning in your direction, but they're both a little on the slow-ish side and Hunt wants at least one upbeat one.
The wonderful Mary DesRosiers (fine Scottish name...?) is MC'ing and will deliver the Address To A Haggis.
I'll check out the others- thanks, all!

I usually go with Tibbie Dunbar... which I learned from that little known LP by Flying Cloud. LOL

this is my not so subtle hint that Liam's Brother really needs to get those songs back into circulation. :D

My songs would be Ca'The Yowes Tae the Knowes (2nd Version), Let Me In This Ae Night, The Highlands Widows Lament.

You could also if you wanted to recite the poem Address To A Haggis.

Hope you have a good Burn's Night and whatever you choose to do enjoy.

Cheers

Wee Jock

Both are great, actually, but I probably better stay away from Ye Jacobites, not really knowing my audience and a' that...

We seem to be the ones who get the last-minute calls! Hunt and I have just been invited to sing two songs next week at a Burns' Night supper. Our personal Burns repertoire is fairly short, and I haven't been to a Burns' Night in probably 25 years, so what are your favorite two songs to sing (the MC is doing Auld Lang Syne, so we have the rest of the repertoire to choose from!).
Thanks a bunch!
allison
