Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: Stringsinger Date: 03 Jun 12 - 07:27 PM Glocca Morra is from the mind of Yip Harburg, one of America's greatest lyricists. It would be interesting to find out where he got the name. |
Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: GUEST,Ken Brock Date: 03 Jun 12 - 08:28 PM I recall reading in a Harburg bio (maybe The Man Who Put the Rainbow in Oz) that he picked Glocca Morra because is scanned the same as Connamara. |

Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: GUEST,DrWord Date: 26 Nov 19 - 06:13 PM Dropped in to browse ~ read this entire thread. I would point out that the absolutely wonderful book The crock of gold, which the OP did cite, seems (?) a pretty obvious source .... don’t know what guestRob is on about, but glad this thread unraveled today. I would highly recommend the book. Highly. keep on pickin’ dennis |
Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: GUEST Date: 13 Apr 22 - 08:22 AM Try Google maps using the coordinates originally posted by Nightwing and it clearly shows the Gloccamaura Inn on R639. The question is, does the brook still leaping there? |
Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: GUEST,Stringsinger Date: 13 Apr 22 - 09:15 AM Glocca Morra was in the mind of the great Yip Harburg. He actually put it on the map though no one can find it. Burton Lane (ne: Levy) created a lovely Irish tune. |
Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 13 Apr 22 - 02:38 PM Whaddya wanna bet the Inn was built because of the song. Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: Bonnie Shaljean - PM Date: 22 Jan 12 - 05:29 AM If Ireland has no Glocca Morra, somebody'll probably build one (with luxury spa and retail park) just to attract the tourists. |
Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: leeneia Date: 14 Apr 22 - 04:04 PM There is a place called Gloccamara. The first post in this thread quotes a document from Cork County which is about speed limits and mentions Gloccamara three times. Check it out. |
Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: GUEST,Jerry A. O'Neill Date: 19 Apr 22 - 07:11 PM I can't believe this thread is still alive after 10 years. Pubs at junctions are used, all over Ireland, for giving directions. The main road from Cork Airport into the city has a junction called the Bull McCabe. It's used by everyone for giving directions. "Turn Left or Right at the Bull McCabe" etc. However "The Bull McCabe" is an old pub with a newish name, maybe 20 years old. There is no geographical location called "Bull McCabe" There is a pub, however, called after the main character in a J.B. Keane drama, called the "The Field" which was made into a successful movie. The main character "Bull McCabe" (he was not actually a real bull!) was nominated for an Acadamy award. However, he was not named after the well known Cork bar. One document from Cork County Council, does not outweigh all the other evidence that there is no such place as Glocca Morra / Glocca Mara / Glocca Maura, apart from private premises. The present Cork County Council website has no reference to any of those names. The document sited obviously referred, with an erroneous spelling, to the junction where the Glocca Maura pub stands. The official database for place names in Ireland, has no such location as Glocca Morra / Glocca Mara / Glocca Maura. Oh God! I'm tired. |

Subject: RE: Just where IS Glocca Morra? From: GUEST,Guest Glocamora Date: 13 Oct 22 - 07:15 PM showmystreet.com shows Glockamara to be in the middle of what looks like an old castle/courtyard in or at Clonoly Castle, or 63PG+9V Clonoy Cross. lots of rocks there! There IS a Gloca Mora. I live on that street and have been told I have rocks in my head, which may or may not be different. |
