I was told that the fledgling's parents are nearby, watching it, and the thing to do is to put the little one IN THE SHADE in a place where the parents can find it. Shade is critical; hot sun will dehydrate a little bird rapidly. In the case of the bluegrass festival, I would try to get the fledgling far enough away from the stage so that music and people walking about don't confuse the parent birds. Even if the parent birds don't understand what has happened, they will find the fledgling by calling to it and listening for its cheeping replies. |

She had later apparently emailed to say it was a Cardinal and it was doing fine. I have no idea of the native bird life in that region, so can't comment. But it's nice to know it ended well. And Rusty Dobro; LOL, best ad-lib I've seen all year! |

From: Leadfingers Date: 23 Jan 12 - 08:34 PM When I was but a lad my Bro and I found a fledged Crowlet that was being stalked by a cat , while Mom and Dad Divebombed the cat to keep the youngster safe ! Where the Crowlet was was NOT a good place to get away from - A Bomb Damamged open air swimmimg pool - so we took Crowlet home (NOT Too far from the park where Home Nest was) and deposited same in what HAD been a Rabbit Run , Fenced but open to the sky . It wasnt long til Mom and Dad Crow turned up , but it was three days before they could get Crowlet far enough up the trees at the end of our garden to make it back to the park , so I DO know how well Parent Birds can find stray offspring ! That is one LOVELY Vid , and its good to know it had a happy outcome ! |
