Subject: Phil Ochs documentary on PBS tomorrow From: BK Lick Date: 22 Jan 12 - 06:34 PM From David Bianculli's blog entry: "Phil Ochs Documentary Kicks Off Second Quarter-Century for Superb PBS 'American Masters' Series" |
Subject: Phil Ochs: PBS Documentary From: Neil D Date: 22 Jan 12 - 06:35 PM PBS is opening a new season of it's American Masters series with the documentary "Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune". It airs at 10pm Jan 23 in my area but will have different times and dates in other markets, so look for it in your television guides. Our local paper had a preview of the show but yours may just say AMERICAN MASTERS (Season Premier). I know there are countless Catters who appreciate his music as much as I always have so here's your heads up. |
Subject: RE: Phil Ochs: PBS Documentary From: Mark Ross Date: 22 Jan 12 - 07:21 PM If you watch closely, you can see Phil playing my (then) brand new guitar on an XXX rated cable TV show taped at the Cafe Wha on Macdougal Street in 1974. Mark Ross |
Subject: RE: Phil Ochs: PBS Documentary From: Thomas Stern Date: 22 Jan 12 - 09:18 PM These are re-runs - the program was aired last year, and a DVD is available. The lack of additional material on the DVD is a disappointment - the concert footage should have been provided, unedited, and without voice-over, as well as complete interviews. Otherwise, an excellent document. There are a great number of audio recordings available, including a CD of material recorded before the classic Elektra albums, and a concert from 1970 supporting Greenpeace. The Elektra-UK compilation (American Troubador) includes his African recording - a decade before Paul Simon harvested that musical treasure. Best wishes, Thomas. |
Subject: RE: Phil Ochs: PBS Documentary From: BK Lick Date: 22 Jan 12 - 10:54 PM Don't think this documentary has been televised although it did have a limited distribution in theaters. |

Subject: RE: Phil Ochs: PBS Documentary 23 Jan (most US areas) From: GUEST Date: 23 Jan 12 - 07:34 AM Eleven minutes had to be cut for time, so his entire child hood and early life in the village is gone. Check out the dvd or Netflix for the full movie. Re dvd extras-youhave to pay for every minute of archival footage, so it gets expensive to include complete songs. Don't now why they didn't' put the interviews on. |
Subject: RE: Phil Ochs: PBS Documentary 23 Jan (most US areas) From: Elmore Date: 23 Jan 12 - 04:43 PM I gave up waiting for PBS, and got it on Netflix. Too bad they(PBS) screwed up an excellent production. I knew most of his story from biographies, but was saddened to see what tough shape he was in at the end. |
