Subject: Songs of Scotland, Vol1 1877, Brown& Pit From: John in Brisbane Date: 07 Oct 99 - 07:48 PM I have done a preliminary search of this book (Brown and Pittman, Boosey and Co, London) and have found what appear to be a number of omissions in the DT. Before I launch myself into too much activity I would appreciate feedback from anyone who has this book, or anyone more familiar wuth Scottish song than myself. This looks like it could be a major project which I will plug away at for some time, but I am very aware that the variations in Scottish spelling make text searches very unequivocal. While there may be fifty or so songs which I could not locate in the DT (or were missing tunes) the following seemed to be the more obvious starters:
Maggie Lauder - Tune not in DT
All help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Songs of Scotland, Vol1 1877, Brown From: MMario Date: 07 Oct 99 - 08:06 PM JOhn - from my viewpoint, even if you just did the ones with the missing tunes - 40% of the sample you put up, surely it would be a worthwhile roject? and that would give time for others to rspond re: versions. |

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Songs of Scotland, Vol1 1877, Brown From: Lesley N. Date: 07 Oct 99 - 09:48 PM John,
I have used Songs of Scotland - Vol 1 and 11 as a resource for my site and have, I think, around 15 tunes and lyrics from them. (Mary's Dream is one.)
The reason I don't use them as much as I used to is because the scans don't turn out as well as with some of the sources I got more recently (so I have to spend a lot of time editing to get a viable midi). The newer sources also have more history (though Volume 11 has some notes). I'll have to revist them. Gilderoy intrigues me. The book says it dates back to 1650. Wonder how they came up with that?

Subject: Tune Add: ROBIN ADAIR and LEA RIG (Burns) From: John in Brisbane Date: 07 Oct 99 - 10:00 PM Hi Bruce, thanks for responding so quickly. Could you please email me on johninbrisbane@hotbot.com so that I can get a clearer picture as to how to proceed from here .. if at all.
I'm sure that you've come across 'A Touch On The Times - Songs of Social Change 1770 to 1914 - Edited by Roy Palmer'. Are the contents already in your collection?
In the meantime I had already prepared the following Midis, so will post below pending advice from Bruce whether I'm merely wasting my time.
Regards, John

Subject: RE: Tune Add: Songs of Scotland, Vol1 1877, Brown From: Bruce O. Date: 07 Oct 99 - 10:19 PM I have a few books by Palmer, but not that one. I can't find Lea Rig/ My Ain Kind Dearie in DT. Little is listed in my collection that's subsequent to 1865, except tunes in Joyce's 'Old Irish Folk Music and Songs'. I have Graham's/ Woods 'Songs of Scotland', but it's not listed, as most of it is in 'Scots Musical Museum'. I'll check on the second tune for Mary's Dream, and then check with you. It may be next week before I get to it. |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Songs of Scotland, Vol1 1877, Brown From: John in Brisbane Date: 07 Oct 99 - 10:31 PM Thanks Lesley, I hadn't seen your note prior to responding above. I guess that Mudcat regulars will by now be aware that my main interest here is to plug holes in the database, mainly for missing tunes, and with a general bias towards my Celtic ancestry. Along the way it's inevitable that I find what looks like brand new material to the database, but I certainly recognise that this is a well trodden road for people like Bruce and you who are much more experienced. This often means that what is new to me is old news for others, or that the DT already has the tune elsewhere, but not linked to the particular song lyrics. In the mean time I'm happy to get further guidance from you.
Regards, John |
Subject: RE: Tune Add: Songs of Scotland, Vol1 1877, Brown From: Lesley N. Date: 08 Oct 99 - 06:35 AM I don't have guidance in the way Bruce does (whose knowledge is awesome!) - just another resource. It takes me a while to generate a midi and I thought as some of mine are from the same source it might save you some time to start with mine rather than scratch! (And it might not!)
For a while I was posting messages to add the lyrics and tunes that weren't in DT when I put them on my page. If there was a set of lyrics that was similar I didn't do it. I got a long term assignment and stopped because my time is now limited (argh!!!) So what I really meant to say was that I applaud your efforts and hoped to make them a bit easier because it is a BIG project. I am going to tackle Gileroy. I'll post it here when I'm done so that you have one less tune to do!
