Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: Mr Red Date: 02 Feb 12 - 12:35 PM Abingdon to Bath is 75 miles? I think not. We travel to Bath from Stroud and that is not 174 miles round trip. Unless you add up all the persons in the car and count them as "journeys" The question was distance for dancing at a ceilidh. But the answers are very interesting. |

Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: vectis Date: 30 Jan 12 - 10:18 AM 12,500 miles to dance halfway up a mountain in South Island NZ. Not quite as far as Christchurch but close. |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: GUEST,Ex singer Date: 29 Jan 12 - 11:34 AM I know that a certain person in Abingdon travels regulary to Bath for a ceilidh 'fix' each month, a total of 150 miles round trip. Also travels each month to both Stroud and Cheltenham ... so that's a lot of miles every month. |

Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: JHW Date: 29 Jan 12 - 09:37 AM As a punter myself and two friends travelled from NE England, they from Robin Hood's Bay North Yorks to Norwich 20? years ago because I insisted they must hear 'this' band. We camped at Reepham then into the city where no-one knew where it was happening and eventually the law found out for us. A wonderful circuit training night of a Ceilidh with Blowzabella. Well worth the trip the AA says is 219m each way. |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: banjoman Date: 29 Jan 12 - 07:58 AM From Basingstoke to Lingen-Ems in North Germany. Band provided with food & drink and hotel plus £1000 to play all weekend at concerts & ceilidh. Never had fees like that since |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: Sandy Mc Lean Date: 28 Jan 12 - 08:12 PM 4000 miles one way. Ceilidh simply means a visit. |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: GUEST,John Foxen Date: 28 Jan 12 - 01:35 PM From Chelmsford to Chepstow (174 miles) on January 21 for a celidh organised by the wonderful Widders Border Morris side. We set off Saturday morning, arrived in time to play with the Widders when they danced in the town in the afternoon, then took part in the annual Mari Lwyd ceremony -- meeting up with English sides on the bridge that crosses the Wye, the border between Wales and England. Then there was the splendid ceilidh (we were dancing punters there not musicians) and back to Chelmsford next morning. |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: Marilyn Date: 28 Jan 12 - 10:00 AM I thought the question was just about how far you would travel to go to a ceilidh to dance; if we're also talking about how far you would travel to play for dancing that's different. As long as we're getting travelling expenses (i.e. enough to cover the cost of the fuel) as well as a reasonable fee for playing, my ceilidh band and I will travel as far as we need to to get the gig. In practice almost all our gigs are within a 50 mile radius of home. |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: GUEST,alex s (no cookie) Date: 28 Jan 12 - 09:37 AM 198 miles round trip to Carlisle and back. more time travelling than playing.... |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: Mo the caller Date: 28 Jan 12 - 09:34 AM Like Marilyn we go to the Poynton ceilidh whenever we can (surprising how many clashes there are) over 70 miles round trip. Phoenix is 47 miles away, the band and caller need to be special for a hundred mile round trip. Similarly for Ormskirk dance club, they put on good dances it's too far to go often. For regular weekly dance club we go one 17 and one 35 miles away. Another is 40 miles, which seems too far for more than once a month. To call at a ceilidh, I often travel up to 50 miles each way, not happy to go much further, but if the band accepts a booking.... The furthest was over 90 miles each way, I was glad to accept a lift from one of the band (and after travelling, setting up, and waiting around while they ate, we played for 45 minutes and the organiser came and told us they wanted the disco now, gave us our money, so we packed up and came home again!) |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: GUEST,Paul Burke Date: 28 Jan 12 - 09:24 AM Sorry, twas I. |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: GUEST Date: 28 Jan 12 - 08:58 AM Longest trip in miles or time? I don't do ceilidhs, but I once walked from Kilfenora to Doolin in the hope of a bit of a session. When I got there, it was full of German backpackers singing Villy McBride and Velds of Attenreich, so I had a pint then walked back via Lickeen Lough. The round trip was over 20 miles walking, and I didn't even get to play! |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 28 Jan 12 - 08:34 AM Scotland to Spain to play in 3 ceilidhs in 2009. Going again this year for 3 more - great! Oh, and we did once attend one in Christchurch, New Zealand, tho' we were in the country for other reasons! |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: doc.tom Date: 28 Jan 12 - 08:28 AM To play in the band, or to be a punter? |
Subject: RE: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: Marilyn Date: 28 Jan 12 - 08:21 AM 40 miles but, given the price of fuel these days, we might have to think carefully about how far we travel in future - fuel for an 80 mile round trip makes it a very expensive night! |
Subject: the furthest you travelled to a ceilidh? From: Mr Red Date: 28 Jan 12 - 08:15 AM What is the furthest you have traveled to a ceilidh? Not festivals (per se) - just one night ceilidh. |
