You're very welcome Bonnie & Leeneia! I've now put both my tunes i.e. Lewis Castle & Little Burnt Potato in a folder together at the following link (with the right titles this time!!!).

Maeve - what a treasure trove your link unearths! I live just up the road from Althorp (or Althrop) House and what do I find .... a tune called Althrop House...I'm delighted - thanks! I think I'll use this site again!

Thanks.

Andy, I love the tune "Little Burnt Potato." It's saucy.

Bonnie, you're very welcome. Feel free to rewrite that E flat I stuck in as an ornament at the end. I was feeling flippant.

Andy and Leeneia, thank you both so much for two great tunes, an old one (or at least from the sound, it could be) and a lovely new one. Both of them will sound nice on the harp too, so cheers for the treats! What a great resource the old Cat is -

Here is the link to the real Lewis Castle tune - apologies for posting the wrong one an hour or two ago!!! It's from All Buttoned Up; an Album by the Cock & Bull Band.

Oooops! I wrote out the wrong tune - Apologies!!! I will write out the right one tomorrow and post it. The one I posted as Lewis Castle today was actually "Little Burnt Potato" as far as I know!!!

It's a jig that I got from "All Buttoned Up", an album by The Cock and Bull Band from 1981 (Topic12TS421) and only available on vinyl. It's a great tune and on the album is played as the second of a pair of jigs segued together, the first jig being another excellent tune called A Trip to Shorts (which you can find at www.abcnotation.com/tunes). I very much hope this Lewis Castle is the tune that Melancholy Dave is seeking - but if not it's a cracking tune anyway! All thanks due to the Cock and Bull Band.

Doesn't look like something from Walsh's time.

Where did you get it?

Here's a link to Lewis Castle. I couldn't find it anywhere on the net but have it in my head - so I wrote it out. It's in G as that's the key I play it in on D/G melodeon.

Hello, Dave. On the assumption that you need this piece because you live near Lewis Castle or that you know somebody named Lewis who is having an anniversery, I have decided to compose a piece you can use. I called it "Return to Lewis Castle," and I just sent it to Joe Offer to post here at the Mudcat.

Anybody who wants it can use it for anything. I abjure all copyright. Just don't write nasty words to it and call them bawdy.

Watch this space for a post from Joe providing the MIDI. Maybe some kind soul will then provide the abc.

The other place to look, besides Gore, is the National Tune Index. Which is on an enormous hard-to-use microfiche set that very large libraries have. If it's in there, you can use their coding scheme to see if it occurs in some more accessible collection by another name.

But if EFDSS have it, they're the obvious place to try. Helpful and professional.

Not in Oswald or Gow or any of the other old collections I looked through (before I saw Jack's post) either. It sure is obscure for a "Celebrated Country Dance [tune] Now In Vogue"!

Might be here http://www.thesession.org/tunes/. The name doesn't appear but you can search for a bit of ABC notation e.g. 'FAAB AFED' if you know it. It's a huge resource, emphasis is on 'Irish' tunes but there's huge overlap.

This tune is unknown to Gore's Scottish Fiddle Tune Index. How did you come to know it exists?

Yes, definitely ask them. When I worked at Cecil Sharp House we gave photocopies of public-domain material to pretty much anybody who wanted them. They might even be able to fax or scan-&-email it to you. Worth a try, anyway. (No luck with the National Library of Scotland?)

Worth a try, at least...especially for a modest donation to cover costs.

Thanks to all of you for your friendly advice. Apparently Walsh Caledonian Country Dances Book 2 is locked away in the library at Cecil Sharp House EFDSS. Its a long way to go to get one tune methinks. Not sure if they would send me a copy of this tune??????

I haven't done more than briefly glance at this interesting-looking website, but this man would probably be a good person to ask. There's quite a lot of historical info about sources if you click on some of the links - worth looking at in greater detail than I've had time to do at the moment (sorry, the Mudcat blickifier is still taking forever, thanks for the other clickies, Maeve). Surely Lewis Castle must be in some of the other collections as well as Walsh if it was a popular dance tune.

Bonnie's links, snuck in via link maker

So we're apparently looking for Walsh Caledonian Country Dances Book 2, Part 2, as suggested by Bonnie.

The volumes IMSLP do have contain a lot of neat other tunes, tho. Since we're on the subject:

Aaarrgghh, I managed to run down a copy of Vol 2 Part I in the Petrucci database, but that tune's not in it, so it must be in Vol 2 Part Something Else. That volume's page 71 boasts a tune that rejoices in the name of Tuzzy Muzzy, and there's no Lewis Castle listed in the table of contents.

This crowd (below) seems to have Books II and IV in their collection, though you'll have to write them because I couldn't see a download, only a mention:

http://sites.scran.ac.uk/jmhenderson/web/collection/jmhcoll/walsh.htm

(Please excuse the lack of a clickable link - Mudcat is slower than frozen molasses today and it was taking ages so I bailed out.) Their contact info is:

You could also get in touch with the infinitely-helpful National Library of Scotland.

Does it have to be from that historical source? Otherwise I assume you've tried the online tune sites like www.thesession.org etc?

Let us know if (& where) you find it, especially if it's downloadable.

Thanks very much Maeve - tried the link without success. Th tune is printed in Walsh's Caledonian Country Dances 2 on page 71. Unfortunately I can't find any access to that collection.

Many thanks again.

Dave

Does anyone have the tune and the chords for 'Lewis Castle' - a dance tune collected in Walsh Caledonian Country Dances Book 2? I do know it is on page 71. Tune in notation or ABC would be great! Thank s so much.
