Incidentally, the three little pigs have excellent folk credentials. Not only is the story rooted in violent legend, but the Disney version shows that the folk instrument playing pigs (tin whistle, fiddle) are shown to derelict their duty, only to be saved by the brick building, piano playing porcine. The old world rescued by the new, etcetera.

I love the Archies - cynical manufactured Bubblegum pop rock at it's finest.

A dream team of late 1960s songwriters and session singers & musicians.

I've collected their entire discography
and am not alone in wishing for legal CD release of all their LPs
and a box set of unreleased recordings.

Sorry Genie. A quick Google will find you details of "The Muppets Comic" So they are cartoons, even if that's not how people usually view them.

OK, I stand corrected - sort of. But I don't really call someone (some entity) a "cartoon character" just because a cartoon has been spun off from them.   (I mean, should we think of all our fearless leaders as "cartoon characters" just because they are frequently the subject of political cartoons?

(Don't answer that.)


Anyway, I'm limiting my list to characters that BEGAN as cartoon characters (comic strips, animated cartoons, etc.)

We caught a Christmas episode of South Park the other night which was very musical, as can be The Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad. And who can forget that episode of King of the Hill where Peggy Hill gets involved with a group of Feminist singer-songwriters who take her song about a turtle to be a metaphor of oppression?

I really enjoyed (and can still sing a fair few) of the songs from "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown", so I'm going to say the Peanuts Gang (although that might be more than five... lessee: Charlie, Linus, Lucy, Snoopy, Schroeder... kewl!)
