Subject: Wendy Arrowsmith @ Herga(UK) Mon 6 Feb From: George Papavgeris Date: 04 Feb 12 - 04:03 AM Based in Yorkshire, Wendy Arrowsmith has been making waves for some time now, reaching further and further all the time, both with her sensitive yet robust renditions of traditional material and her own self-penned songs too. Now at last the Wendy's waves are reaching Herga, and very grateful we are for it too! Don't miss her this Monday 6th February at 8pm. Our address, as always Herga Folk & Acoustic Pinner Green Social Club Rickmansworth Road, Pinner, Middlesex HA5 3TJ |

Subject: RE: Wendy Arrowsmith @ Herga(UK) Mon 6 Feb From: George Papavgeris Date: 07 Feb 12 - 09:27 AM Well, the lady done good. She done very good indeed. Both the self-penned and trad material were excellent and wonderfully performed. Her voice clear, her delivery bold and purposeful, the patter enjoyable. But two songs stick out for me: a) Wendy's rendition of the Anachie Gordon just has to be in the top three deliveries I have ever witnessed, of any ballad. And I can't even think which would be the other two, I just don't want Wendy to get too big-headed! :-) b) Wendy's own "Isaac" deserves to get several covers, such a lovely lyric and gorgeous tune, and the theme itself not likely to get weather-worn with the years. I put it right up there with John Beavis' "New Road" (Moses and the Ref, can I sponsor you to learn it?) Also: I recently read i9n a thread here about the dearth of really good female guitar players. Look no further, Wendy's guitar playing is up there with the best. |
Subject: RE: Wendy Arrowsmith @ Herga(UK) Mon 6 Feb From: GUEST,Banjiman Date: 07 Feb 12 - 09:54 AM George..... that's some review! She'll be very touched. Just for you Annachie Gordon from Beverley Folk Fest 2011 Paul |
Subject: RE: Wendy Arrowsmith @ Herga(UK) Mon 6 Feb From: George Papavgeris Date: 07 Feb 12 - 11:16 AM No more that she deserves, Paul. I just wish my own performance had been better last night, I was called to the front in a rush with an out of tune guitar, I knew time was short, so I did Empty handed while trying to avoid hitting 2 of the strings; very off-putting. Oh, and I believe we got some "dirt" on you too - something to do with Jimmy Shands and your Dad, accord(eon)ing to Wendy... She was very complimentary about your good self. Much of the time. OK, some of it. :-) |
Subject: RE: Wendy Arrowsmith @ Herga(UK) Mon 6 Feb From: GUEST,Banjiman Date: 08 Feb 12 - 04:20 AM ......dirt? I've always led a very clean, innocent life :-) My Dad did buy Jimmy Shand's accordion many, many, many moons ago. Was that the story or was it that I confessed that I'd have to have a Jimmy Shand record as one of my Desert Island discs (just to remind me of my Dad you understand!) Any way, Wendy is at Faversham Folk Club tonight. I wonder if anyone will be there...... or will they all be glued to the Folk Awards? |
