Brilliant to see the Oysterband and June Tabor take away 4 awards between them. Does that make them part of the folk mafia now and if so, are they still one of the BEST bands in the world EVER!!! We need to know these things :-)

The red button didn't work when I tried it. Same for my mate in Maidstone. Perhaps too many people were pressing their red buttons at the same time, or perhaps there was just a problem in Kent.

For your info the Young Folk Award wasn't judged by the same panel that chose the bulk of last night's award recipients. All four of the finalists have great talent and promise and gave excellent performances on the night. Any one of them would have been a worthy winner.

I got the concert but my machine refused to record it. Pity, I was out at a folk club. Still I recorded the radio programme.

Sanjay didn't win or anything, but I suppose that wasn't really to be expected, if some of the judges felt like the mudcat people that he wasn't anything to do with folk music. A bit sad, but there we are - the state of the nation, as they say.

To watch on the REd Button you need to be tuned into BBC1 or 2 then press your text button = then you will get a text screen with a large red circle ( button). You navigate to this and press your OK button. You will maybe be presented with a choice and if so navigate to BBC Folk Awards.

Canal Planner says 4 hrs from Leigh to Pomona, Actual time 8hrs through ICE upto 4inches in places across the Moss. Bridgewater Canal Co turned 8 men out to swing the tank, and then held the men on to work Pomona Lock so we could get down onto the ship canal. The MSC Harbour master granted us access to North Bay the old No. 9 dock beyond the normal limit of navigation and out of the cruising season. All so we could deliver the folk group Pilgrims' Way to the national Folk awards at the Lowry tonight. Watch Northwest Tonight now! and then the Red button on BBC1.

The band are fine musicians, superb performers and really nice people to boot who have worked bloody hard over the years and paid their dues. Having them in a session always lifts it. Come on Tom, Edwin and Lucy!

I am looking forward to pressing the red button and seeing the Folk Awards from The Lowry in Salford. Nice to have events like this 'up north'.

I don't care who the judges are, nor who is awarded the 'gongs', nor whether this represents the folk scene. There are some performers up for awards who I wouldn't cross the street to see but hey ho!

It's all publicity for 'folk music' whatever that is?

Let's hope that any young people who are attracted to the music get a friendly welcome if they dare to venture into a folk club.

I think you just press the red button when you are watching BBC TV (on freeview or satellite) and select the option.   Or you could try channel 301 on freeview - I think that's the one the red button takes you to.

It's also available streamed via the bbc website

For those who cannot get into The Lowry:

Third Birthday of Tunes at The Beech, M21 9EG, and only about 4 miles away.

We have collected around 50 musicians - melodeons, accordians, concertinas, banjos, guitars, percussion, ukes, 'cellos, mandolins, a harp, many, many whistles and such like, Northumbrian Smallpipes, hammered dulcimar and voices - The Beech Band, no less.

We put the dots on the table and playa staedt tempo.

Tonight Ms Elizabeth Calderbank, of Chorley, will dance the famous Lancashire Clog Dances and The Beech Band will seek to play tunes at the same time.

We send fraternal greetings to all at The Lowry but we will have more fun. I trust those Beechists who are off to The Lowry wont cause trouble!

Well the Dubliners for one are! Hope that this creates a precedent for preserving the old values being recognised!

Saw Scottish Young Musician Traditional awards on telly yesterday and I do hope that having Julie Fowlis with Mike Harding will forge better English Traditional values.

Instrumental musicianship using fiddles, melodeons, whistles, mandolins etc is unbelievable

Songs though and singers other than the trail blazing June Tabor and Nick Jones (back in business after many years god bless him!)

I predict that everyone loosely or directly connected to the folk music scene in the UK will all feel the benefit and be effective winners. There will be lots of media coverage, plenty of newspaper reports about the vibrant scene we all love to one extent or another. There'll be five hours of network radio coverage from the awards starting at 5pm on Radio 2 followed by a special programme about the Dubliners.

Everybody in attendance will have a great time and be delighted for and cheer on the award winners regardless of whether they happen to be their mates.

I also foresee there'll be plenty of grumbling from a small group of embittered people who can't bring themselves to enter this spirit and who think some semi-pro semi-able friend of theirs should be nominated ahead of the highly able professionals at the awards.

In conclusion, if you look at it with an open heart and mind we'll all be winners.
