Subject: BS/music: Garage sales!! From: annamill Date: 08 Oct 99 - 08:31 PM Hi Everyone, I'm getting ready!! Glenn Honey is working til 12:30am. We're getting up at 5:30 am to leave. We should be stompin' by about 10:30am, I hope. But that's not why I'm writing..I am having so much fun discovering Folk. Glenn and I go garage saleing when we have the time. Last weekend we fell upon a wonder. Right now I'm listening to "the hammered dulcimer" with bill spence and fennig's all-star string band. "Sandy River Belle". We bought Frank Wakefield playing with a group called "Country Cooking". "The Collectors Choice" Alan Lomax!! and ..sorry Caroline and Sandy.."The Appalachian Dulcimer" with Jean Richie. It's an instructional record from our own Folkways. "The Hammered Dulcimer Played by Chet Parker" ..again Folkways. Somebody out here likes you guys. Then of course, "We Shall Overcome" Pete Seeger at Carnegie Hall... "I can see a new day" again, Pete Seeger. B.B. King ...alright, a Frank Zappa, but he doesn't belong in this posting. ;-) (an old one. no mothers) I am having a great time. To those who haven't left yet, we'll see you in DC! Love, annap

Subject: RE: BS/music: Garage sales!! From: Susan A-R Date: 08 Oct 99 - 08:46 PM I got Pete Seeger's God Bless the Grass, A double album with Pete and Arlo in concert, a couple of Judy Collins and Joan Baez albums, (the Alman Brothers Eat a Peach album, the White Album and Abby Road, yes, I do digress) all at yard sales. I bet there will be a lot in town this weekend. I'll check. It's leaf peeper season AND we are doing some sort of commemoration of the USS Dewey (Dewey Days) here in town. Should be quite a lot of used vinyl out there. Susan |

Subject: RE: BS/music: Garage sales!! From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Oct 99 - 10:43 PM uh, annap.....Sandy and Caroline own "Folk-Legacy" not "Folkways," a huge company by comparison, but they have been in it for years and recorded folk first and foremost. Spaw...Thanks on th Mick thing |
Subject: RE: BS/music: Garage sales!! From: Chet W. Date: 08 Oct 99 - 11:03 PM I like to go to such sales, but I don't have much time anymore for that. One related thing that happens everytime I buy a new instrument, there's always somebody who will tell me they got one just like it at a yard sale for $5 or thereabouts. By now I believe that it's another "urban myth" thing and I've started doing it myself. The universe tends toward chaos anyway. Chet |

Subject: RE: BS/music: Garage sales!! From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 11 Oct 99 - 11:15 PM I know a professional banjo player who has a deal with his garbage collector. He will pay $5 for any instrument that the collector brings him, regardless of condition. The man has made some substantial money culling the treasures from the trash he has received this way. It helps that he is quite knowledgeable about instruments and is successful at "trading up" one instrument for another. Gee, there sure are a lot of ways to make money. Roger in Baltimore |
