yes... But it is live radio and I guess he was told he must stick to the time. I am watching the show on Freeview 301 and I could tell by his facial expression he wasn't happy with the tuning. Tuning was fine for second song.

Unless you have bloody cloth ears, Don MacClean's guitar was very very very very out of tune in the first song (in which he also made some unforced, peculiar whining noises at the ends of phrases), but only very very out of tune in the second. He tweaked one string only in a very cursory manner 'twixt songs. Incredibly unprofessional, and, for me, a 30-year-old dream shattered! :-( Shall we dub it "the Donovan effect"?

But the Unthanks with the brass band were sublime. Utterly perfect. I had a pot at 'em a while ago for putting on gigs at which you couldn't sit down. All is forgiven! And the Dubs of course. Wonderful!

please don't take shots at any of the artists. We don't know what is going on in any case. Perhaps the feedback interfered with hearing the tuning. Perhaps his own hearing is failing. I know mine is.

It was unfortunate. I am sure Mr Mclean himself was not happy about it.

Echoing you Steve Shaw on the Unthanks though. The mix of their, voices, that brass band and the song was just spine tingling wonderful. I love it when music make endorphins.

Well done to June and Oysterband. The Tabor / Jones voice blend is marvelous. Now I want to learn Our Captain Cried All Hands.

And I am so excited about Sidmouth. I will have tickets to their show. Bit worried that as a steward I might have to chose between Tabor and Oysterband and Eliza, Norma and Martin (The Gift Band). I need a clone.

Great interview with McClean on Simon Mayo's programme prior to the awards programme. Several songs too. he had the Dubliners too.

There wasn't any feedback during Don MacLean's set (or at any time. In fairness, trying to sing to an out-of-tune guitar can be very difficult, but I've no idea what he was doing with the vocals in the frst song - it sounded very strange.

What surprised me most was that he didn't immediately retune - it seemed to be almost an afterthought when he tweaked the worst string just before starting his second song, which was better but nothing special.

I don't see why he shouldn't be criticised. He's just been given a Lifetime Achievement Award, and then delivers a performance which would have been embarrassing from a floorspot in a second-rate folk club. All the other performers were spot-on. Apart from DM, it was a brilliant show.

There's a theory that the Folk Awards have to include a Famous Singer to attract attention from outside the folk world. My theory is they're there to show just how good the real folk talent is.

And didn`t Stuart MacConie go on a bit with his waffle?. I have a great deal of time for him but his eulogy regarding Ian Campbell, being the peoples champion was bit toe curling because Mr.Campbell was not the only one to sing songs reflecting the modern life and times.

Tim Edy hails from Broadstairs a small town on the South coast of England where nothing much happens except a week long folk festival. He started when knee high playing piano accordian, moved onto melodeon, but despite our attempts to encourge his plying of English music, his main passion was for the Irish. He used to play a lot and be quite shy. Since then he's developed a lovely stage personality and proficiency in other instruments, and sings a bit. Met up with him again at the Sheltland festival last year where he had taken some youngsters under his wing.

Bill Leaders award was a fantastic moment. Just possibly the greatest wizard at the back of countless artists there has ever been. Young Mike nearly crumbling was understandable in the circumstances.

I think Stu Mac's dedication was superb not so much for what he was saying to us but in terms of telling outsiders present/listening what the calibre of people from the folk world are. I still think Lorna Campbell is one of the best female singers I've ever heard.

At least Ian Campbell dressed for the occasion unlike Christy Moore who looked like he'd just come in from walking the dog.

Whatever the heated discussions around the awards I was glad to be be able to watch it. I can't say I really heard anything that would have grabbed me if I wasn't already out of the folk world.

What does worry me is the disparity between what I see and hear in my little folk world. I can't see Pete Coe, Steve Turner, Brian Peters, Harvey Andrews, Vin Garbutt, Phil Hare, Bram Taylor, Gary & Vera Aspey, Bernard Wrigley and countless others ever really getting much of a look in if the format stays as it is. Stanley Accrington at least got into the stalls but will hever get any nearer the stage? I doubt it, but I'd bet he'd make a presenter to remember if MH ever had to cry off sick.

John Tams got his little anti Conservative political dig in, but where was he when the two B's and their henchmen were destroying our society and going to war on smokey lies.
