Well I don't usually like to talk about my ailments, but I've seen the Mudcat mojo work and I'd like to ask for it now. On Friday I went to work feeling fine, and by 11:00 am I became so ill that my business partner called the ambulance and I was rushed to the emergency room. Turned out it was a 6 mm kidney stone that had stopped up the kidney and caused an infection. After a hospital stay and a stent, the infection is cleared and they've sent me home with percoset to wait till the stone passes. They may end up breaking it up with ultrasound or actually going in and getting it out, but they prefer the more conservative approach of having me drink lots of water to flush it out. So please send mudcat mojo - I want this stone to pass - I'm miserable!

And it's gonna hurt like all hell when it passes...but remember, this too shall pass.

Good thoughts a-comin'.

Mine passed DURING the hospital exams....good thing, too. Worst pain I ever had! Dilaudid IV kept me sane until it passed. And later, I caught it... THAT tiny little thing hurt that much?

Anyway...yeah...best thoughts for quick resolution.

If it turns out to be a uric acid stone, get on potassium citrate as soon as possible! In my experience passing the stone is nothing compared to the pain when it leaves the kidney, and you are beyond that.

That site is worth reading. I don't envy you this. Thoughts and prayers may help, and since that's all I can do, consider it done.

Note it's important you drink water and pee lots. Some people can get rid of a stone and it's fine. Others have to set new pain records. I hope your experience is the former.

I know about a half dozen jokes that would fit just fine here, but after the stone is done away with will be soon enough to tell them.

Best wishes to you.

Best wishes from here too. I have two friends who have had them more than once and from what they have said I devoutly wish for no first-hand information.

May it melt (do they melt?) swiftly and pass well-nigh painlessly.

Giving thanks, here, for immediate and full release of all concerning this challenge. I *see* the stone disintegrating into fine, teeny-tiny grains which pass freely and with ease. Thanks for this or something better for the highest good of all concerned. So mote it be!

I'll keep you in my thoughts.:-)

Bleeding things do hurt! If they are still in the kidney it may be possible to smash them up with ultrasound so they are small enough to pass with little or no pain.

X ray was inconclusive, so tomorrow they are going to do a CT scan. There is a chance that the stone has gone back into the kidney which would not be good !

I've been appalled as I visit different doctors'offices (today will be the fifth doctor I've seen) and also as I go between rooms at the SAME clinic, with the same questions asked repeatedly by the assistants. "Is your problem on the right or the left side" and "Did you get a stent". They're holding a folder in their hand, which I suppose is my chart. I asked one of them if that information wasn't printed on my chart (shouldn't it be featured rather prominently that I had a kidney stone on the LEFT side, and what the status was (STENT REMOVED)?) and she snapped back "Yes but why should I bother to look at the chart when I can just ask you?". Okay, but what if I was confused...I'd think they'd at least take a look at the doctors notes. So if I said it was the right side you'd xray the right side then, no questions asked????

In SOME clinics & hospitals, even assistants are supposed to follow basic procedures and READ the charts...and then maybe double-check with the patient before doing anything serious. That is just laziness, and should be brought to the doctors attention.

Mary, some hospitals have established a safety check procedure requiring each person to ask certain questions to ensure you are the correct patient and they are carrying out the correct procedure. Some of what you describe might fall into that category.

On the other hand (left or right, Ma'am?) that person sould be reported for unprofessional behavior.

Yes, cranberry juice is good.

Also, 6 drops of lemon juice per day. I put twice that in a cup of fresh squeezed cranbery juice. It reduces the chance of kidney stones, gall stones and parotid stones.

The doc messed up. Two weeks later, I had the left parotid removed. I drink my juice every day. I eat very little salt... mac & cheese once a month, one tbsp of cottage cheese per day, max.

Well the stone has returned to the kidney. Apparently when they did the stent they pushed it back in and it is now an a "lower chamber" where the stone doesn't have too much of a tendency to want to get out. They said to leave it for a month as there is still some inflammation from the stent, and then they will see about blasting it. Of course if it tries to escape again it'll probably be back to the emergency room... In general I'm not too impressed with the Urology practice and their professionalism - the questions that should have been obvious if they'd looked at the chart weren't phrased as verifying information - more like a clueless "what are you in here for, I haven't had time to look". It's a huge practice with offices all over town and I really felt like a cog in the wheel - all consultations very rushed. The last consult was with a Phsycian's Assistant who took the time to answer my questions and explain what was going on. I told him I appreciated it and he said "That's why I'm a PA and not a doctor". It just seems to be a more relaxed relationship and maybe they allow them more time with the patient. So I'm kinda on pins and needles hoping that this stone doesn't try to come out again before they can blast it. The stent must have broken it up a little bit, it's only 5mm as opposed to 6mm, but that still is considered a large stone to pass.

Best wishes and good thoughts, Mary, for the stone to rest where it is until you're able to resume your quest to be added to Guinness's Book as the woman who has answered the largest number of redundant questions about a kidney stone.

There's nothing funny about a stone in the urinary tract, especially the bill you will get.
You have my sympathy, Mary.

I have been trying not to think about the bills - I do have insurance but there is a $2500 deductible. I've had to shell out for numerous co-pays, prescriptions, and a $500 deposit in the emergency room - but now keeping my fingers crossed that all or most of the procedures will be covered. The bill will be coming soon, I'm sure..
