Got my wife a 'little Martin' for Chistmas one year. She stores it in the overhead bin w/no problem.

I play mandolin, so I'm good. :-)

@Guest 999: It varies with the type of aircraft, but I believe the overhead compartments of most major commercial aircraft are deep enough to accommodate a standard guitar case, if you can get it in there before other people's luggage is in the way. If you're able to fly first class, the attendant will usually put it in the first class closet for you.

What is the maximum of each of the height, width, depth in order for a musical instrument to fit in the overhead space?

I've been told I had to check my guitar once. Never again. Have to remember to board first with "those with young children or who need special assistance" though, or there might not be room in overhead.

I'm glad to hear it. Too bad Congress had to codify something that seems like simple common sense, but such is the age we live in.

Not that I've ever had any problem myself. I've travelled with guitar, dulcimer and recorders and everything's been fine.

Congress has passed legislation that creates a uniform national policy regarding musical instruments on airplanes. Any instrument that can be safely stored in the overhead compartment or underneath the seat may be brought on board as carry-on luggage!
