Great dedication ...

Splendid video from Mike Askin of Tom Kitchen and Edwin Beasant crashing the ice with narrow-boat Spey on the Bridgewater Canal to get at the booze at the Folk Awards in Manchester t'other night. Including transversing the only canal swing aquaduct in the world.

It's rarely in life I feel as if I'm missing something, but watching this video I feel exactly that. Superb & inspiring stuff. Since moving to the North West the whole barge thing has me beguiled (no canals in Northumberland & Durham) but this is something else...

I was saling one night on the deep
While in my hammock I fell asleep
I dreamed a dream and I thought it true
Concerning Kitchen and Beasant and their gallant crew.

So, they were never seen again? Polar bears can be very agressive and hungry at this time of year in Salford or were the attacked by roaming gangs of Happy Monday's fans?

A folk mystery for sure

Tom Kitching (not Kitchen) and Edwin are part of Pilgrims' Way, who were nominated for the Horizon Award, so it was fairly important that they made it to the Lowry!

It's a great video.

Les,

You missed the imortal word from Les Barker,

"Where the Eskimo in his skin canoe,
And you don't see many this side of Crew"

Cheers

By gum, Salford docks haven't changed a bit since I were a lad.

Loads of canals in the NW - see the definitive map:

http://www.canaljunction.com/canal/

Canal boats - narrow-boats - are available for hire throughout the canal network although they tend to be better equipped for living and sleeping in than working boat Spey!!

There is also Sue Day's unique Horse Boating group to get involved with.

http://www.horseboating.org.uk/

She has quite a few clips of the horse boats she runs on YouTube.

Here's a couple of great websites:

Pilgrims' Way seem to love canals. There is another video on Youtube: The Handweaver and the Factory Maid.

They deserved to win something for just the sheer effort they put into getting to the Awards in grand style (as well as the music, of course)!

I'm glad neither of them fell into the canal! I'm looking forward to their second CD.
