It depends how much you want to spend ! Zoom do a range , as do Tascom and Olympus ! I have an Olympus DS 30 that is VERY small and gives good "stereo" witha buikt in microphone - Tascam DR07 is a bit bigger and works well , also with built in Mic ! Both bought in USA for less than $100 .
Zoom 4 is a bit fiddly to operate , but the Zoom 1 has been lauded in here on other threads .

Probably a DR 5, 7 or 8. I couldn't locat the other threads, but I'll look again.

I'd investigate the new Zoom R8.

ok, it's larger than a handheld, but still portable enough to operate on batteries
out of a back pack, or on a table.

Doesn't cost much more than a Zoom H2n,
and is vastly more versatile..

current average price for Zoom R8 approx £190 or much cheaper if in USA.

I have a sony ICD UX200 AND I love it..it is very small...recording quality to my not demanding ears is very good..especially good from farther away..gets static etc. close up...but I have some great recordings from camps etc. It makes MP3s without having to convert, and it is easy enough for me to figure out and use, which is a bonus. No, a requirement. Sine qua non. I had some sort of discount..think regular price from Amazon is about $65 US. mg

I have a TASCAM DR-1. Purchased it a week before the DR-2 came out. Satisfactory service. Good battery life. Hardest part was getting 500 MB chips so I could record to CD without editing.

Zoom H2 works really great for jam recordings. You can select 4 way recording in wav or 2 way stereo for mp3s. The best news is you can drag and drop your files into a ITunes or Win Media Player and record your own CDs.
I spent over $350 for a Sony Walkman but had to real time play it back to my PC to make CDs. Sony likes proprioritory software so I have bought my last Sony anything.
The H2 is less than $200. and is user friendly after studying the manual.

+1 for the Zoom H2.
My only grouse is that the display isn't very easy to read, it's backlit but still quite dim, but that's probably caused by my old age.

I've just bought a Tascam DR07 MkII - very pleased with it. Good battery life, and small enough to pass unnoticed at a pub session. I've downloaded a free audio editing suite, and the results so far seem very good.

Can the recordings on tascam devices be transferred or downloaded via USB port to a computer?

Tascam Dr07 has a Mini Socket that will go straight to a USB port and downloads straight in with Wndows - IF you think it wants tweaking , Audacity is free download

Also consider the Edirol R09. More expensive than the Zoom H1/2 but very good quality, easy to use and small enough to carry round and use discretely.

Will record in wav or mp3 and it's easy to transfer the recordings to the computer either via a usb lead or by putting the memory card into a card reader if your computer has one.
