Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lightfoot- Sinking of Belgrano From: pdq Date: 16 Feb 12 - 03:38 PM The General Belgrano by David Childers Coming 'round ol' Cape Horn, the General Belgrano rolling up to do some damage, sailing through the mist of a religion out of the water came a round house punch, a British submarine torpedo In the cold south Atlantic, gonna make the sharks happy the General, the General, The General Belgrano Going down with the propeller still turning, The General Belgrano.... {same subject, at least} |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lightfoot- Sinking of Belgrano From: GUEST,999 Date: 16 Feb 12 - 03:45 PM I ain't finding a thing, Q. The boat was called the General Belgrano if you refer to the Argentinian boat from the Falklands War, but that didn't help in the search. Also, for people searching, don't bother with anything before 1982. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lightfoot- Sinking of Belgrano From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 16 Feb 12 - 03:57 PM No such song I suspect. Confusion might arise because sites about famous sinkings tend to include both the Belgrano and the Edmund Fitzgerald, with a note about Gordon Lightfoot's song about the latter - and both tend to turn up together in abbreviated Google search headings - for example: FAMOUS SHIPWRECKS WORLDWIDE www.shipwreckexpo.com/famousshipwrecks.htm Thanks to the popular 1976 song by singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, the story of the ... The sinking of the warship Belgrano is one of the most dramatic and ... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lightfoot- Sinking of Belgrano From: GUEST,Ebor_Fiddler Date: 16 Feb 12 - 05:45 PM Seriously, I have never been able to understand the fuss made about sinking "The General Belgrano". There was a war on and it was a warship on the other side. Hence it was a legitimate target. I think "The Sun" headline "Gotcha" particularly tasteless, as is the Childers' song quoted above, but the excuse that it was sailing away from the invaded islands did not render it harmless. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lightfoot- Sinking of Belgrano From: John MacKenzie Date: 17 Feb 12 - 01:22 PM What direction was the Graf Spee going in? Oh and don't forget the Scharnhorst or the Tirpitz. Would it have helped if Churchill was PM at the time of the Belgrano, rather than Thatcher? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lightfoot- Sinking of Belgrano From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 17 Feb 12 - 01:30 PM Ask for a song and get codswallop. Thanks, McGrath and 999, for keeping to the question. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lightfoot- Sinking of Belgrano From: GUEST,Tunesmith Date: 18 Feb 12 - 02:43 AM There is no excuse for the sinking of the Belgrano. The British created an exclusion zone around the Falklands and said anything inside the zone could be attacked. The Belgrano was OUTSIDE the exclusion AND heading away from the Falklands when she was sunk! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Lightfoot- Sinking of Belgrano From: Dead Horse Date: 18 Feb 12 - 06:32 AM Lets keep the argument going eh? I wonder how long this thread can be kept wandering AFTER the original question was answered? Be good if we can stretch it to the Boer War, Canada, Boxer Rebellion etc. Bung in some furry little animals and a few conspiracy theories for good measure too. |

Check back and see how many previous topics have wandered away from their original trust! That's what happens naturally in conversation - or hadn't you noticed? |
