Those are the lyrics exactly, keberoxu, except that the first two lines of each verse are repeated, thus:

Too little, too late, I suppose, but there is this:

A song with the same opening words is in an online library book,
from an anthology published around 1900.
Perhaps it is the song the OP requested, I can't be certain.

In the liturgical schedule, would be followed by Compline.

I think my elder daughter has the recording- I used to have it but I can't find it. The recording is still available from some dealers, but has been discontinued. I'll ask her, and try to post, if no one comes up with it in the meantime.
(Not sure that it is the Engel song. My ears hear something about night)

Strange it doesn't come up in a google search if it is a folk song popular enough for that recording.

Q, Abendlied is from the CD Volkslieder und Wiegenlieder that you recommend as the original poster already mentioned.

I would have transcribed the lyrics already but both the cduniverse as the myspace links point to a soundbite of just 30 seconds with less than two lines of text; I haven't found a complete version yet (except for buying the album, that is).

Joe, Rita Streich was a 'light' opera singer, with a voice that was capable of popular and 'folk' song as well as the operatic 'tricks' (perhaps the best control of vibrato I have ever heard.

Try that recording sometime- Rita Streich- Volkslieder und Wiegenlieder.

Listen to her "Silent Night" on youtube. A clear voice with excellent diction.

Now, Michael, take it easy. Paul actually has a point (and his post serves to refresh the thread) - I can't see falling to sleep to a lullaby/evening song sung by an operatic soprano.

I suppose this song fits into the category of "Lieder" (art songs), rather than a functional lullaby. Still and all, wouldn't somebody like to do a transcription?

Hi, Marcos - Yes, "Wiegenlied" is the standard German word for "lullaby" - but I would think that in most cases, "lullaby" is also a good translation for "Abendlied."

Joe: How resourceful and helpful you are. Thank you. I can read German(after a fashion at least) but I am not familiar with the spoken/sung language. I make out other words or lines: in deinem Schutze schlafen wir, im schonen Morgenschein... but even with these additional words I can make no advance in research. I hope more experienced ears come to help us.

PS. Don´t you think that Wiegenlied(Wiege, cradle) translates better lullaby? The Abendlied, as far as I know, is usually a prayer(Gebet).

"Abendlied," of course, is a generic name for "lullaby" (literally "evening song") - so there are lots of songs titled "Abendlied." There's a recording of the Rita Streich "Abendlied" on MySpace. I plugged various phrases into google.de, and found nothing so far. I can't make out enough to do a transcription.

Anybody want to try? The first line is "Verschwunden ist des Tages Licht, und alles geht zur Ruh." ABC for the tune is here (click), also here (click). This page says the song is by by D. H. Engel , "Abendlied", op. 61, published 1874 [vocal duet with piano], Leipzig, Siegel
