"Original"?

Do you mean the Tommy McClennan song. I believe it's a one chord number.

Catfish Blues usually noted as 'traditional', although several performers have put together their own version of the lyrics. Skip James recorded his version in 1964.

Original?
Robert Petway (recorded 1941) is often credited with its origin.

Right, Q... Robert Petway is indeed credited with the song... It is one of the most covered song by country bluesman of them all... Seems everyone does it... I did it on my last CD... Most play it in 4-1 (pick your key)... And yeah, no to bluesman play the same verses and it's one of those song that allows for pulling in verses from other blues songs...

B~
