Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Wind Blows High Jump Rope Lyrics From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Mar 12 - 11:18 PM mamalisa.com ties it to "I'll Tell Me Ma." The Wind Blows High Jump Rope Song The wind, the wind, the wind blows high Blowing (a name) through the sky She is handsome, she is pretty She's the queen of the highland city She goes courting 1-2-3, Won't you tell us who is she? We have it listed in our Digital Tradition Folk Song Database as The Wind, The Wind (6 versions) I did not find it in the Jumprope Hypertext Archive (also here at Mudcat). Can anybody contribute other versions? 6 is pretty good though, hey? -Joe- And just because I like it, here's Robert Hunter singing his The Wind Blows High, an entirely different song. Lyrics at Grateful Dead Lyric and Song Finder... |
Subject: ADD Version: The Wind Blows High From: Joe Offer Date: 01 Mar 12 - 11:50 PM http://funwithfolk.com/en/songs/35-all-songs/83-the-wind-blows-high.html has lyrics and a nice recording: THE WIND BLOWS HIGH The wind, the wind, the wind blows high. The rain comes scattering down the sky. She is handsome, she is pretty. She is the flower of London city. She goes a-courting one, two, three. Oh pray will you tell us who will it be? Tommy Jones he says he loves her. All the boys are fighting for her. Let the boys say what they will, But Tommy Jones he loves her still. He knocks at the door and he picks up a pin. And says 'Mrs Brown is your daughter within'. She's neither within and she's neither without, But she's in the back parlour walking about. Sweetheart, sweetheart will you marry me. Yes sir, yes sir at half past three. Half past three will be too late. We can't have the party 'til half past eight. |
Subject: ADD Version: The Wind Blows High From: Flash Company Date: 02 Mar 12 - 10:15 AM Mid-Cheshire version circa 1940 went as follows:- THE WIND BLOWS HIGH The wind, the wind, the wind blows high, The rain comes clatterin' down the sky, She is handsome, she is pretty, She is the Queen of the Golden City, She is a-courting one two three, Please will you tell us who is he? Johnny Kelly says he loves her, All the boys are fighting for her, Let the boys go as they will, But it's Johnny Kelly she loves still. He takes her in the garden and sits her on his knee And says 'My dear, will you marry me?' She says 'Tomorrow!' but he says 'Today!' So they both take their horses and ride far away. FC |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Wind Blows High Jump Rope Lyrics From: Snuffy Date: 02 Mar 12 - 05:01 PM Almost identical first verse from Stockport area ca 1954: our rain came "scattering" rather than "clattering", and she was the "Girl" of the Golden City, not the "Queen". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Wind Blows High Jump Rope Lyrics From: GUEST Date: 23 Oct 14 - 07:53 AM I remember a very similar version from Derbyshire around 1950 Something like The wind, the wind, the wind blows high The rain comes scattering down the sky He is handsome, she is pretty She is the girl of the London City Johnny Smith sits her on his knee and says dear Christine, Will you marry me, oh will you marry me! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Wind Blows High Jump Rope Lyrics From: GUEST,GUEST Date: 12 Jan 17 - 07:31 PM What I remember from third grade in 1960 in Northern Minnesota is a kind of "duck-duck-goose" sort of grade school game where a (named) child would walk around while the song was chanted and "choose" the next person who would then stand up and walk around with the new name being chanted and so on and so on..... The wind, the wind, the wind blows high, The snow comes falling from the sky, (Name) says she'd (he'd) like to try, She's (He's) the girl (boy) of the golden city. She (He) is handsome, she (he) is witty, She (He) is the girl (boy) of the golden city, She (He) shall choose 1-2-3, you are the one that it will be. I only remember the one verse ever being used. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Wind Blows High Jump Rope Lyrics From: Nigel Parsons Date: 13 Jan 17 - 06:59 AM No claim as to which is the original, but apart from the 6 versions Joe links above, possibly the best known is "The Belle of Belfast City" also known as "The Wind" or "I'll tell me ma". Although, admittedly when I hear it, I go back to schooldays: "She is handsome, she is pretty She's the girl with big big titties!" Oh the fun we had in those far off days . . . |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Wind Blows High Jump Rope Lyrics From: Nigel Parsons Date: 13 Jan 17 - 07:05 AM According to Wikipaedia: Roud Folk Song Index number 2649. Something Joe would know more about than me, but worth checking? It might explain why we can find so many variants. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Wind Blows High Jump Rope Lyrics From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Jan 17 - 08:09 PM Thanks, Nigel - I see that Wikipedia lists the song under I'll Tell Me Ma. Steve Roud, by the way, did a great book on playground songs. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Wind Blows High Jump Rope Lyrics From: GUEST Date: 29 Mar 18 - 04:46 AM In the Spectator, Alan Powers writes: The wind, the wind, the wind blows high The snow is falling from the sky, Maisie Drummond says she'll die For want of the Golden City. This children's rhyme provided the title for Sacheverell Sitwell's final prose book in 1973, a testimony of stoic resistance to the modern world. |
