Subject: After The Ball (was over) From: C.Gordon@Motorola.com Date: 11 Oct 99 - 05:54 PM After the ball was over, She took out her glass eye. Stood her cork leg in the corner, Hung up her hair to dry. Put her false teeth in the basin, Turned out the light in the hall; The rest of her went off to slumber After the ball. (This is the version my father, George Gordon, used to sing in the 50's) |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: After the Ball -&- Hi-Lili Hi-Lo From: Bat Goddess Date: 20 Jun 08 - 08:14 AM "After the Ball" was written about a true experience , sort of -- and the location was the ballroom above the Turners' Hall in Milwaukee. The ballroom was restored sometime within the past 10 years and I got the story from an article in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal. It's also said he overheard a lovers' quarrel at a dance in Chicago and thought up the line "many a heart is breaking after the ball", liked it and used it when he wrote the song. He was living in Milwaukee and probably attended dances at the Turners' Hall, too. Linn |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After The Ball (was over)-parodies From: GUEST,Uke Date: 26 Mar 09 - 04:52 PM A second verse from 1960s New Zealand students, that follows approxiamately the same as above: Her head when she wakes in the morning, Will not have an ache nor a pain. It also fell off her torso - This semi-detachable Jane. "I no longer am what I was, dear, what I have left is my all. Treat it with all due respect, dear - After the ball." |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After The Ball (was over)-parodies From: Steve Gardham Date: 18 May 09 - 03:38 PM The theme is at least 17th century, probably older. I'm getting deja vu here. I'm sure there has already been a thread on these spare-part songs. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After The Ball (was over)-parodies From: GUEST,TJ in San Diego Date: 18 May 09 - 06:58 PM A different song, but right out of the same "playbook" of mischieviously altered material - a parody of "Silver Threads Among the Gold," another hoary oldie from the turn of the last century. "At the boarding house where we live, Everything is growing old. Silver threads are in the butter, All the bread has turned to mold. When the dog died, we hat hot dogs, When the cat died, catnip tea. When the landlord died, I left there; Spareribs were too much for me..." |

Subject: Lyr Add: AFTER THE STRIKE (Joseph A. Hemer) From: dick greenhaus Date: 18 May 09 - 08:50 PM for those too proud to look things up in Digitrad, there's: Once a pretty maiden climbed an old man's knee Asked for a story-"Papa tell me, Why are you lonely, why are you sad, Why do your shopmates call you a scab?" I had friends, pet, long, long ye-ars ago, How I lost them you soon shall know; I'll tell it all, pet, tell all my shame; I was a scab, pet, I was to blame." cho: After the strike is over, After the men have won, After the shops have opened, After the notice is down; Many the heart is aching, Though the hope seems bright That many a scab will vanish After the strike. Brave men were fighting, standing side by side, Fighting for justice, fighting with pride, I then was with them---with them heart and soul, But when the test came, I left them in the cold, I thought it best, pet, best to turn a scab; Best to return, pet, to the job I had, That's why I'm lonely, that's why I'm sad, That's why my shopmates call me a scab. cho: Many years have passed, pet, since I won that name, And in song and story they have told my shame, I have tried to tell them, tried to explain, But they will not listen, pleading is in vain; Everywhere I wander, everywhere I roam, The story of my shame is sure to find my home, I'd give my life, pet, I'd give my all, If I had not turned traitor, or scabbed at all. cho: From American Labor Songs of the Nineteenth Century, Foner @parody @union @strike Note: published in the United Mine Workers' Journal, May 24, 1894 filename[ AFTRSTRK TUNE FILE: AFTRBALL CLICK TO PLAY RG |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After The Ball (was over)-parodies From: semi-submersible Date: 24 Nov 09 - 03:21 PM The "revolting" line above, "Coughed up her bottle of rye" sounds suspiciously close to the bit my mother sang me about "Corked up her bottle of dye." Oral transmission/folk process, I guess. After the ball was over Maggie took out her glass eye, Put her false teeth in some water, Corked up her bottle of dye, Stood her false leg in a corner, Hung up her wig on the wall; Then what was left went to slumber After the ball. (Could've been "all the rest" instead of "what was left." I'm not sure.) I like Barbara's mother's version best in this thread. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After The Ball (was over)-parodies From: trischief Date: 25 Dec 09 - 07:55 PM The only thing I would add to this discussion is a variation substituting the word "switch" in the line "hung her wig up on the wall". My grandmother sang this parody to me. She was from rural central Illinois, born in 1883. m |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After The Ball (was over)-parodies From: GUEST,Lori Spring Date: 28 May 10 - 02:06 PM This is a slightly different version I learned as a kid in the 1940's After the ball was over Mary took out her glass eye Put her false teeth in some water Hung up her hair to dry Put her wooden leg in the corner Hung her tin ear on the wall What was left went to slumber After the ball |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After The Ball (was over)-parodies From: GUEST,Pete Date: 28 May 10 - 03:11 PM These are all fairly similar so I may as well post the version I learned from my mother and passed on to my two daughters. Real oral tradition or what? After the ball was over, Maggie took ouy her glass eye, put her false leg in the corner, corked up her bottle of dye. Rinsed out her teeth in the basin, hung up her hair on the wall, and all that was left went to bye-byes, after the ball |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After The Ball (was over)-parodies From: GUEST,mrszzano Date: 01 Aug 10 - 11:58 PM I might as well add my mom's version, from the 50's. After the ball was over, Mamie took out her glass eye, Put her false teeth in water, Hung up her wig to dry, Stood her peg leg in the corner, Hung her tin ear on the wall. And all that was left was her shadow After the ball. There you go, Mom, now you're out in cyberspace! |

Thanks for all these postings and variations - they made me laugh! Marcie |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After the Ball (was over)-parodies From: GUEST Date: 29 Apr 12 - 06:35 PM My old headmaster at primary school was a part time jazz musician who used to get us all together on a Friday afternoon to sing songs from the music hall days etc. The version he taught us( in 1977 ish) was this: After the ball was over, she took out her glass eye. Put her false teeth in water, shook from her hair the dye. Kicked her cork leg in the corner, stripped off her false nails and all. Then what was left went to bye-byes after the ball. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: After the Ball (was over)-parodies From: GUEST,Gill Date: 30 May 12 - 05:37 PM This is the real version, and I know this because my Nanna born in 1893 sang it to me 100s of times throughout my childhood. Nanna came from a large very poor family and only affordable entertainment was the local Eastbourne Music Hall, admission a penny I think she said. I'm certain this is closer to the original because it has more alliteration. After the ball is over See Nellie take out her glass eye Put her false teeth in water Cork up her bottle of dye Kick her cork leg in the corner Hang up her wig on the wall All that is left goes to bye-byes After the ball. |
