Subject: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: bbc Date: 11 Oct 99 - 09:33 PM We are safely home (maybe we can put those comments here, Knitpick!), but hit terrible traffic & it took us about 9 hours--blah! Please, all Mudcat members, if you were at the DC Get- Away, please post your Mudcat name to this thread, so that I can put them all on the soon-to-be-up events page w/ the group photo from the Get-Away. I don't want to miss anyone by mistake. Everything the others said about the time together goes for me, too; I'm still glowing. It was incredibly wonderful to look in the eyes of these folks, to hug them & chat w/ them, & to hear their diverse talents. Ferrara, thank you so much for giving us that time together! I truly feel proud to be a member of this group. I knew already that you are good folks; it was such a thrill to realize how talented you are, too! We made a big contribution to the Get-Away--in music, fellowship, & kitchen work. :) I was tickled to see how many of our folks performed in the 2 evening concerts. Yes, I did sing a time or two & was made to feel very welcome. I had a chance to spend time w/ several of the Mudcatters & really get a start on knowing them & it will enrich for me every posting I read from them from now on. When we parted, there was little sadness, because I knew I would meet them again, online & very likely in person as well. Wonderful, wonderful! (Moonchild, I'll never tell!) :) Please do add your name here, if you attended! my love to all, bbc P.S.--Give me a day or two on the photos. David has a musical to rehearse, college early acceptance applications to get out on deadline, computer work to do (for pay!), & yes, I have to go back to work! |

Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Charlie Baum Date: 12 Oct 99 - 12:51 AM I was there.
According to my reckoning, there were at least 26 Mudcatters (including family, significant others, etc.) who were new to the Getaway this year (or at least, not regulars):
Sandy Paton (and Caroline Paton)
Then, there are the folks who are FSGW regulars or who have been to many Getaways before who are Mudcatters: Who have I left out?
Liam's Brother told me he went fishing, and I think the timing was such that he missed the great group shot outside the main lodge. --Charlie Baum

Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: KathWestra Date: 12 Oct 99 - 10:49 AM Bbc -- Can't wait to see those pictures in the gallery. It was great to meet everyone, and will be wonderful to have a photo record of that Mudcat workshop. Max -- will we have a musical record too? Hugs to everyone from someone who was there and wishes she still were. Kathy Westra (KathWestra) |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: annamill Date: 12 Oct 99 - 11:22 AM I'm still smiling too. I had a wonderful time and so did my honey, Glenn. Even though his heart belongs to rock, he is a musician and was overwhelmed with the talent we heard. Love, annap |

Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: voyager Date: 12 Oct 99 - 03:44 PM Thanks to the Mudcat Crowd for letting me join the fun. What a hoot!!! Will there be a songlist compiled from the Saturday night show? There were many great tunes I'd like to recover (find the songwriter, tablature, whatever). Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Charlie Baum Date: 12 Oct 99 - 04:06 PM voyager (Tim)-- There probably isn't a list of songs from either Saturday or Sunday evening's show. I don't think we even saved the list of performers. But if you remember something about who sang a particular song you want to learn, group memory be able to reconstruct the information for you. The only thing I remember is that the Yorkist Ballad Charade Society did "William Taylor". What a hoot(enany)! --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Charlie Baum Date: 12 Oct 99 - 04:07 PM Actually, come to think of it, the FSGW probably did make an archive tape of the evening. We'll have to figure out who has it and how to consult it. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: bbc Date: 12 Oct 99 - 05:32 PM I'm hoping we will put lyrics up (after searching the DT & Mudcat) on the new "Songs from the Get-Away" thread, so they will be easy for Dick & Susan to find. Thanks! bbc |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Sandy Paton Date: 12 Oct 99 - 07:47 PM Sandy Paton (cleverly disguised as Sandy Paton when he posts to the threads) was there with his wife, Caroline, who only lurks as yet but loves you all. Sandy |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Susan of DT Date: 12 Oct 99 - 08:23 PM Yup, Dick and I were there. |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Doloresn Date: 12 Oct 99 - 08:31 PM Charlie (and everyone else) Don & I have a list of all the performers as well as the tapes. We are working with Rita about making copies, etc. Right now all of the audio gear & tapes are still sitting in the foyer packed up. (That's as far as they got when we emptied the car.) It will be tomorrow at the earliest before I can go searching. We also have the tape of the Mudcat workshop. Making copies will be dependent on getting permission from performers. If someone does not want their song included, we will not. Performers who wishes to release or not release their song should contact d-and-d@d-and-d.com. We will make personal copies for anyone who wants one of their own song for analysis, etc. Dolores Nichols Charlie's co-chair Please do not send messages in html! |

Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Big Mick Date: 13 Oct 99 - 06:42 AM Yup, I was there taking up space. Still numb with the emotion of it all. In the picture I will be in the back row center. The song I did in the "Music of the Mudcat" was "Dublin in the Rare Ould Times". And Kathy Westra, Jeri and I did "Far From Their Homes" at the Sunday night concert. I have no problem with them being included in the tape. And thanks to Mary LaMarca for including me in the Yorkist Ballad Charade Society. It was an absolute ball. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Bert Date: 13 Oct 99 - 09:15 AM Yup, I was there too, but I didn't know there was a group photo. The recording is OK by me.

Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Ferrara Date: 13 Oct 99 - 09:28 AM I just started a new thread about the tapes, hope Dolores & other interested parties will check it out & correct my inevitable mistakes.... About the Yorkist Ballad Charade Society: Some years ago, a bunch of Getaway regulars started trying to figure out what makes a ballad. They decided it's not the lyrics or the tune, it's the fact that it tells a story. So they set out to perform a ballad without either lyrics or tune. Thus was born the Yorkist Ballad Charade Society, whereof the members dress in silly costumes each year during the Getaway concert and pantomime a ballad which the audience has to guess. They've been getting better and better and funnier and funnier. Sorry, I don't think Don taped this act.... - Rita |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Jeri Date: 13 Oct 99 - 09:45 AM I was either there, or had a really good dream. Too bad I had to wake up. |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: TimS Date: 13 Oct 99 - 12:54 PM TO Big Mick: I was at the Mudcat workshop, which was one of my better moves of the weekend. I *thoroughly* enjoyed your rendition of "Dublin In The Rare Ould Times". I sure wouldn't mind having a recording of that! I was standing next to Don Nichols and his migic recording box. He was handing the headphones to just about anybody who passed by. I got a listen also. No doubt, his equipment is first-rate! No worries about the quality of anything he recorded. The rest of the music was superb also. And though I wasn't a Mudcat member then, I am now. I hope lots of you folks come to the next Getaway, wherever it is. -- Tim Slattery |
Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: Knitpick Date: 13 Oct 99 - 04:15 PM Re: the Yorkist Ballad Charade Society -- it started from Kathy Westra and Charlie West talking about a silly line in a ballad (They shook hands and hugged or kissed) and I know it's been going on for at least TEN years -- performed at the Getaway, Pinewoods Folk Music Week, and another more "private" gathering in May. -- It may even be about 12 years old -- I'll have to look it up somewhere. I know it's always photographed, and some years it has been video taped. I know in 1991 my son Andrew got to be Willie's Lady's baby at the end of the ballad! (And Bennett Hammond of the Boston area played Willie's lady -- Yorkist does not do TYPE casting!)

Subject: RE: request from bbc--Get-Away attendees From: KathWestra Date: 14 Oct 99 - 03:23 PM Actually, the ballad line that started it all was from "The Grey Cock," a ballad about a lover's ghost who returns and knocks on his lady's door. She gets dressed and comes downstairs to see who it is, where they "kissed, shook hands, and embraced each other." I had just sung the ballad (one of my all-time faves!) at the Getaway at Camp Letts, and the Wests and I were commenting on that line and just started acting it out.... The rest, as they say, is history. Kath (the round face peeking out from behind Duane in the first standing row of the group photo) |
