In many ways the season is being determined right now.

Detroit and San Francisco look like strong contenders with young teams and sterling, developing defenses.

Will Suh mature? If so the Lions could have a defensive line comparable to the Cowboys and Steelers of the 70's when excellent D-line play is the only way to slow down today's passing game.

With the veteran teams, Pats, Steelers, Packers, and Saints be able to acquire help for their anemic defenses?

Will the Eagles play up to their talent this year?

Is Robert Griffin what the Doctor ordered for the Skins?

Will Cam Newton mature as a leader while the Panthers are built around him?

Which team will be Peyton's place?

What comments do y'all have about the draft and free agent season?

Haven't been following it while football and rugby and curling are on the go. But... "Will Suh mature?" No.

That would be bad for Detroit. But I think he will. He is a smart kid. He knows what is at stake and every effort is being made to educate him.

Hard to educate a reaction involving a short temper combined with a violent tendancy. I am not saying it can NOT be done but that is some deep shit. IMO he's got a serious character flaw because he just "reacts".

LOL!!!   Watch out Brady!!!!!

Thanks j-boy that is the biggest laugh I have had all week!

I do respect him as athlete and his character is admirable but.....

J'ville is the place for Tebow. He can sell Jags jerseys to the Gator faithful.

The man needs to become a tight end or full back and open the field with the threat of occasional throwing. The Pats defense ate him alive. He is not ready for good NFL defenses.

I agree, JtS. Flash in the pan big story to sell tickets. Unless he matures a lot, he'll never be more. BUT... where is the best place for him to mature? I know it's not HIS call but I think I know where he would LIKE to go in order to have a (possibly) better future as a QB. It ain't really all that big a laugh if you look at it from T-Bo's angle, no?

Tebow will always be a star. Maybe not in football. If he was old enough, the GOP would probably nominate him for President.

I guess the ownership there wants to hear even more complaining about Sanchez.

ARE YOU READY?

I gotta go with the Giants at home. I figure Bradshaw is gonna get a few carries tonight (not that Jacobs won't, of course) and if the Giants secondary doesn't get burned by Romo Bob's yer uncle.

I read that Dallas spent a lot of energy on it's secondary... they had to. >;-) I am anxious to see how Murray performs. About 900 (800? I think it was 900?) yards in 13 games as a rookie is impressive.

Anyway, I've got beer and healthy snacks and I am looking forward to watching the first half.

GO PATS!

NFC East will be very interesting this year. With RG3 at Washington all their divisional games will draw interest.

Likewise the NFC South has, I believe, 3 playoff contenders with New Orleans, Atlanta and Carolina. Tampa looks to take a beating in the division.

The north is still strong but maybe not as powerful as last year and SF and Seattle will battle in the west.

The pundits I have read pick Seattle but I like SF a little more than that.

The AFC has a lot of questions, New England a year older. Manning in Denver, Baltimore defense a year older, Houston? Pittsburgh? Cinci? who knows lots of good teams, but questionable improvement.

Oh my fuck. Not only do I not believe what just happened in Patsland but... I'll just say I am losing my interest in the NFL at a great rate a fuckin nauts. That was shit. Plain, obvious shit. How the fuck do you throw a game in broad daylight SO Many times IN 60 fuckin minutes and expect fans to tune in next week? I feel 8 years old again and the big kid just nailed me in the nuts with the puck. IS EVERY FUCKIN SPORT FIXED FER FUCK SAKE?

We just found out that MLS is (well, HAS been) fixed. I just watched the Owskis throw a game... unless they just coudn't handle the pressure and came apart?

Sorry but that is they way I feel. If I didn't see it right, and someone believes I am wrong, maybe... oh, nevermind... I was thinking about spending more time in the kitchen anyway. I decide what *I* fix for eats in my kitchen.

Did I say, "Oh my fuck."?

Biscuits... yeah... fresh biscuits, molasses, fried ham and eggs... I wonder who is playing later.

I've read the NFL's rationale for the final play of the Packer's game, and it doesn't make sense. The Packers player took the ball in the air, came down with it, and never let go. The Seahawks player had a hand resting on the ball and never had possession. I've seen some bad calls in most forms of football, but this one really takes the biscuit. I was giving the replacement crews the benefit of the doubt, but this weekend was an officiating (and PR) disaster!

Hernandez is out and Gronkowski is Q after a hip injury late in the week? Oh, crap! Buffalo could run them out of the stadium. Time of possession is gonna decide this one... Woodhead is averaging 2.5 and if Brady can't get to Whelker (can you say double-team?) the Pats are in serious trouble.

Brady is/can be amazing, thanks to The Belly. He was amazing at the line today but only due to, what, at least a dozen years of being coached by the best ever coaches? Talent is inate but making it happen is an inate quality that few coaches have in the way the The Belly has it.

I am willing to say that Brady is the smartest QB ever. Sheer talent? Well, that is a tough call.

Hahahahahaaa... I just made myself laugh by comparing Brady and Bradshaw in my mind.

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: BS: NFL 2012/13
From: Jack the Sailor

So far for sheer talent I would have to go with a QB who can run and has a good arm. Staubach, Steve Young, and John Elway come to mind. If being dumb is not held against them Mike Vick and Cam Newton. (There is some hope for Newton to grow up.)

Vick takes the prize for the difference between smarts and talent.

Elway would be my pick.

Montana ranks with Brady as the best leader.

Bradshaw was awesome, but you have to give the rest of his offense, especially Stallworth and Swan, a lot of credit. How could you cover them?

Subject: RE: BS: NFL 2012/13

JtS... Vick on sheer talent and no brains... hard to dispute.

Stallworth and Swan? Yeah... but, who does Brady have ta throw at?

Apples and apples are hard to sort out, eh?

I still gotta say... smart - Brady. Sheer talent - Bradshaw.

Oh, yeah... tough? - Grogan (poor fucker... >;-) )

Not takin anything away from Elway, Montana (who I LOVED to watch play), Kelly (that was tragic to me), Marino (not so tragic because he always struck me as an arrogant SOB) and sO many others.

Warren was the best QB ever to play the Canadian game. A true star here as well. If we are talking release and accuracy, don't we have to give it to Marino.

MVP on his team has to go to P. Manning. Wow what a difference he made in Indy!

Who is/was the toughest?... I already voted. If there was a trophy for the most broken bones I am pretty sure it would be Grogan. From patriotglory.com :Had Grogan had the rules that QBs enjoy today, it is not inconceivable to think he would have been a much better QB than he already was. Fact of the matter is, Grogan was a very dedicated and tough QB. He played with broken bones, torn ligaments, sprained tendons, and crushed vertebrae. Grogan even played one year with cracked vertebrae in his neck and never once complained of his ailment, nor made any excuses about his performance. Only after the season completed, and a statement was released, did fans find out about his injury.

JtS... yup. Thanks.

I'd agree about Grogan - he almost made the Pats respectable in the Superbowl against the Bears, after Tony Eason had his career destroyed.

At least nobody's mentioned Tony Romo. He was the main difference between the Bears and Boys last Monday night. It was only after he was replaced in the last 3 minutes that the Boys had anything like an O.

The rule changes have definitely thrown a wrench into such discussion, making a judgement, subjective to begin with, near impossible. I certainly welcomed the changes whcih I believe have not only improved safety but have also improved the overall level of skill required to be effective on the field. Smashmouth football is still here and will never leave, nor SHOULD it, but I don't miss the days of yore when it had the influence it had. Double goes for hockey.

Great time, gnu. Lot more Rams jerseys than I expected, but Most looked as if they'd been bought on the way into the stadium. Brady jerseys everywhere, and I did see one Grogan, but no Tony Easons (surprise, surprise). My seat was a lot further back than I expected, but the new Wembley has great sightlines, even from the top. I wish the NFL still printed the officials names in the programme - I recognised the ref but couldn't remember his name! Had a great view of the Belly's bald patch once I'd identified him - I didn't realise that all the Pats' coaches wore hoodies! Hardly any British jerseys nowadays. Back in the days of the American Bowl you used to see them all, and I remember seeing the Ravens' squad with Ario Cruz (Ravens quarterback) complaining of 60 odd unanswered points in the playoffs. I wish I had a Ravens jersey, especially if I go to the Pittsburgh game next year (my son prefers the 9ers!). Now trying to catch up on the weekend's action - so far I've watched one and a half games of Rugby Union, and found a site which carries the Shinty/Hurling international - Radio Alba only did it live, but it seems to be available on TG4, and I understand even less Irish than I do Gaelic! And now I'm going to put MNF on my hard disc!

Witch the exception of several inaccurate passes late in the game, his ability to zip it with minimal cocking and, even moreso, his ability to sling it, ala Elway style and even almost underhand, was like watching poetry in motion. I was truly entertained by watching such an arm!

Yes, RG3 was impressive as well.

Bobert! Do you hate the Cowboys for the same reason as me? With me, same as for the Raiders... dirty, dirty, dirty football years ago. Nasty bastards! Cheat as much as possible and simply maim and injure. Kinda like, but not as bad as, Philly in the NHL years back. I gave up on watching hockey and I am a CANUCK! I am serious. Grew up with a Sherwood in my hands but I can't watch NHL hockey except for the semis and on if there is a Canuck team in it. International hockey? Love it. Flyers? They can go take a flyin **** along with the Cowboys and the Raiders.

Save Howie Long, of course. When yer that big and strong and talented ya don't gotta play dirty, ya just gitta suit up.

I was a Cowboys fan from 1978 to 2010. They never had a dirty defense. On the other hand the Raiders bragged about being dirty.

I am no better off with the Panthers than the cowboys, except that the Panthers are genuinely rebuilding while the Cowboys underperform. and the Panthers are in Charlotte and their games are always shown here.

Jerry Jones, on the other hand is the worst owner ever because he fired one of the best pro coach/general manager ever, Jimmy Johnson, then replace the GM with a very very poor GM, himself.

I mentioned Jerry Jones above as the new Al Davis, and I was thinking that Jason Garrett might be a better Head Coach with a different GM. Think of all the ex Raiders coaches who have picked up Superbowl rings in their subsequent careers. I also don't agree with Troy Aikman's (reported) opinion that Tony Romo is a better quarterback than he was.

Wow, Romo vs Aikman?

I've watch both play for years. Romo is more mobile and certainly throws better on the run than Troy did. I think he also has a better arm for long passes. But then, with Dez, Miles and Whitten, I think he has more targets and a better receiving corps than Troy did. Aikman stayed in the pocket longer, Was much more accurate under pressure than Tony and had as much poise under pressure as any QB as I have ever seen. He and Michael Irvin were magic together.

Antonio Ramiro "Tony" Romo (born April 21, 1980) is a professional American football quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL. Romo went undrafted in 2003 after playing college football at Eastern Illinois and signed as a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys.

In their primes I would way rather have Aikman, who was a Number one draft pick. So obviously NFL scouts and general managers thought the same.

I am not the judge of QB play that Troy Aikman is. But I think he is very wrong on this one. I think that so far, the only two QBs in the League currently on a par with him are Brady and Peyton Manning. Though Big Ben and other Manning aren't far behind. I think Rogers, Stafford and the rest of the premier QB's safe in their jobs have a ways to go and Romo is not on a par with them.

Look at it this way, How many teams would trade their starting QB, one for one for Romo? 5-6 maybe. How many for Brady or Aikman in his prime? 25?

We might get a clearer picture the playoff & super bowl contenders this Sunday.

Falcons have a chance to show some balls and put the defending champs behind Washington in the playoff hunt. It would be interesting to see RG3 in the playoffs. And with the Giants out Atlanta's chances look better. If the Giants stomp Atlanta like they did Green Bay, I'd pick them in the AFC.

Is Indy for real? If they beat the Texans look out! But Texan seen on the decline.

I can see one of this year's crop of rookies possibly making a playoff run. Wilson's got a great D and Washington has those two great rookies on offense.

Ravens, Steelers seem to have too many injuries.

Oh yeah and there's Peyton and a pretty good D.

Packers Bears? I like the Packers. But the Giants sure handled them. I'll bet Aaron Roger is rooting for Atlanta.

So far I would pick Niners-Pats as the two best teams. But we will know a lot more about their relative strengths after this weekend.

Gnu, I am surprised that you and Raptor are not talking trash about this one. It is the most interesting match-up to me so far this year.

It think the AFC will be Pats or Broncos or Colts. I guess Titans or Bengals could surprise. Probability in that order. Depending on whether Luck is even better in the playoffs, which he could be.

NFC should be a hell of a playoffs. Washington and Seattle and SF with those great young QB's, Packers and FNo matter who plays it should be a good game. This could be the best NFL playoff season ever!

I'm disappointed that RGIII didn't ask the coach to come out of the game after he got hurt in the 2nd quarter... Coach wasn't goin' to pull him so it was up to RGIII to step aside and let Cousins, who has won the only two games he has played this season, finish... Immature on RGIII's part... Maybe next year he'll be more "team" oriented...

AND... who the fuck would let a player go on the field with an injury? That is just wrong. It's a fuckin game! Robert didn't want to come out but he wasn't playing like he could if healthy. Shanahan should have yanked him, 100% of Cousins is better than 80% of Griffin. I actually think that the more significant injury was that Pro bowl O-lineman who left in the first half. His injury lead to Griffin's re-injury.

Bobert I don't think Griffin is the future of your franchise. As fragile as he seems to be and as reckless as he plays, I don't think he will last. If he loses a couple of steps through injury, Cousins is the better QB because he is better in the pocket. But build up O-line and defense a little and your team will be as good as any in the NFC East, even with Cousins.

I was surprised and a little sad about the Broncos/Ravens but it was a great game, a nailbiter fer sure.

I was sure Rodgers would have a good game but it looked like he was the Rookie in comparison. I was amazed by the kid's throwing action... hardly cock it and throw a bulllet! And he sure can run but I hope the coach explains to him that he is NOT a back or a receiver and ya just don't finish a run with contact if it can be avoided. Then again, it's a morale boost for the team and for the fans. Still dumb, tho. I made it a point to watch the highlight reel at nfl.com as soon as I got up this AM. It's was worth it just to watch that kid throw the ball... poetry.

And Gore? And Crabtree? Wow!

The 49ers O-line were the stars of that game IMHO. Colin Kaepernick is the QB for them but the time he was getting and the holes opened up for Gore and him. AWESOME! Should be a heck of an NFC championship!

Flacco has the strongest arm in the NFL? Okay. And, apparently, the most accurate. Haven't seen much of him up here but what I saw this eve was goooood.

The SB is a tough call but I would put my coin on the Ravens.

Lots of questions and conjecture... no answers. But, he didn't buy a knife and the other two did. Why they bought knives is the biggest question of all for me.

I was puttin on me jammies when the phone rang just minutes ago. Buddy asks me if I heard Brady got a $10,000 fine for the spike!!! I said, no! REALLY?... GOOD!!!

He's my fav QB of nearly all time to watch on the field (come on, who can't absolutely love cudly TB or admire Montana or absofuckinglutely respect Fran or... you get the pic) but I was shocked when I saw that spike and I could not believe it wasn't called. I was two feet from the TV in half the amount of seconds and screaming for a flag and I really don't understand how those refs didn't hear my call for a personal foul penalty??? Ahhhh.... yes I live alone... why do you ask?

When I saw the slo-mo replay, I was twice as pissed. But, the guy is my present QB "hero" on accounta he plays for "my" team so I thought, "mistake" and accepted the fact that the refs musta seen it that way too and, well, gee, okaaaaay, I can live with it. Thank goodness for a review in "the BIG booth upstairs". Ten large is fuck all to Brady but it speaks LARGE to fans like me.

In see Elway says SF. May be. But not if the golden boy runs early and hasn't learned to slide a knee yet... Ray and his buddies gonna put a hurt on that lad if he finishes with his head. Seems to me the coaches are not doing their job when that lad runs and thinks he's a back when he does. Am I wrong?

The Impending Death Of Pro Football
By Ta-Nehisi Coates

Jan 22 2013, 4:19 PM ET 229

This is major:

Brain scans performed on five former NFL players revealed images of the protein that causes football-related brain damage -- the first time researchers have identified signs of the crippling disease in living players.

Researchers who conducted the pilot study at UCLA described the findings as a significant step toward being able to diagnose the disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, in living patients.

"I've been saying that identifying CTE in a living person is the Holy Grail for this disease and for us to be able make advances in treatment," said Dr. Julian Bailes, a Chicago neurosurgeon and one of the study's co-authors. "It's not definitive and there's a lot we still need to discover to help these people, but it's very compelling. It's a new discovery."

I don't know if this will change anything, right now. But telling a player "You have CTE" is a lot different than "You stand some chance of developing it."

There's something more; presumably, if they really learn how to diagnose this, they will be able to say exactly how common it is for football players--and maybe athletes at large--to develop CTE. This is when you start thinking about football and an existential crisis. I don't know what the adults will do. But you tell a parent that their kid has a five percent chance of developing crippling brain damage through playing a sport, and you will see the end of Pop Warner and probably the end of high school football. Colleges would likely follow. (How common are college boxing teams these days?)

After that, I don't know how pro football can stand for long.

Pro football will last as long as the $ are there. I made the team when I was a lad. Came home with my gear. Mum said, "You take that stuff back." I appealed to Dad. Game over. Glad she did. But I still tune in on the TV. Will it change "overall" the way Mum changed it for me? Could be, but not for a looooong time.

Dan... nothin to do with gettin a jersey. I wouldn't want it if I didn't admire his abilities on the field. That is why I would treasure a jersey. Ben? Yeah, he's good but, not to piss you off, he's not a "Long Bomb" yet even though he has the abilities. Read that book some time. And, especially read Alex Karass's book "Big Guys Don't Cry". I REALLY enjoyed that book. I remember the day I read the last page. I was on a flight home and there was a young lad across the aisle. I asked, "You like football?" Yes! I said, "If yer Mum (next to him, obviously) is okay with this, you take this book and read it. I just finished it and I liked it." She nodded and he started reading it immediately. I enjoyed the book and I enjoyed giving ot to that lad even more so. Odd? No matter... made me feel good.

Seriously, Karass's book is a good read.

Finished my beer - can't get Dogfish Head nowadays, so it was a Belgian (Tongerlo Blonde). Now on a Glenrothes single malt. It's nearly midnight here, so I'd better not eat anything (had a water buffalo rib-eye steak earlier). Mike Carlson looks funny in a jacket and tie. I've seen too many games in all codes where the team that scores first goes on to lose. I think the Harbaugh in black will win.

"Baltimore could seal the game in the 2 minutes."

What did Vince say? The Buffalo "comeback game"?

Here is a quote from me... It ain't over until I collect my money or cry in my beer.

But I DO have my Pats hoody on over my 49s tee so I don't see how the Ravens can lose. Just sayin.

Anyone catch Phil Simms' Iron Man Show? Lots of GREAT stuff but saying Fred Biletnikoff didn't deserve the MVP is totally ludicrous after what Fred did all season and in the Superbowl! Anyone that can smoke FOUR packages of cigarettes DURING the Superbowl and do what Fred did deserves TWO rings... and a smoke ring.

Anyone who reads my football posts knows I have a dim view of Phil anyway... his eyesight is poor and his knowledge of the rules is "dimmer" - at best. I often holler at my TV (yes... I know Phil can't hear me), "WTF did you just say? Are we watchin the same game?"

Pee, beer, chicken wings.... SECOND HALF!

GO PATS!

Female kicker to attend NFL scouting combine

Former soccer player realizes odds are stacked against her

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Lauren Silberman has a scant chance at making the NFL.

Silberman never kicked anything more than a soccer ball in an organized game, and she just started practising long-range field goals.

Even so, the first female kicker scheduled to try out at an NFL regional scouting combine would like to see where her new hobby will take her. In an era where Danica Patrick can contend against men in motor sports, Silberman is about to take a big kick forward for female athletes, even if the odds are clearly stacked against her. The 28-year-old Silberman will kick Sunday at the New York Jets' training facility in Florham Park, N.J.

'I realize that I may not make an NFL team this year,' Silberman told NFL.com. 'But for me, I'm expecting to have fun, to meet really interesting people and hopefully perfect my technique from the other tremendous kickers that will be in attendance.' Her goal for the weekend is a true long shot - perfect 60-yard field goals. Odds are, though, that scouts will want to see her connect on extra points and chip-shot field goals with some consistency before moving on to the heavy kicking. Silberman will compete against more accomplished or polished college kickers, all hoping to prove they have the leg strength and accuracy worthy of earning an invite to an NFL training camp. St. Louis Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein participated in a regional combine last year before he was drafted and morphed into 'Legatron.' Silberman won't be kicking against the best of the sure-footed prospects, but there will be talent there regardless. The regional combines debuted in 2011 and feature players who weren't among the 333 invited to the main combine in Indianapolis. The league is holding these sessions in 10 cities this season, with the most impressive players advancing to a super-regional in April in Dallas. It's sort of the sports version of a TV reality show, where each hit and tackle can wow a scout and move a player on to the next round. Only instead of a recording contract, it's an NFL one.
