Subject: Tech: SPDIF output to USB input converter ?

Anyone know of an affordable SPDF [or optical digital] to USB converter [ideally capably of up to 24-Bit / 48kHz or 96kHz].

I can google plenty of simple budget priced devices for sale that work in the opposite direction:
ie outputting a PC or Laptop's media player audio from the USB port to 'audiophile' quality SPDF input
external amps & speakers.

But I need to find a basic converter to connect the SPDF output of a pre-amp/mixer to the USB input of a computer
in order to record in multitrack software sequencers..

So far, no luck finding one. Surprised if they don't exist at all !!!???

Previously, I could connect the Pre-amp/mixer to the SPDF input of E-MU PC soundcards,
but Laptop currently available for use only has USB connections.

cheers...

M-Audio (Avid) no longer do them but you might be able to find an M-Audio Transit Sound Card on Ebay or similar

Tried to do that myself, but I couldn't find anything. I did buy an external sound card, but the SPDIF connections were just for throughput.

thanks for replies..

Hours of googling later...
and it seems SPDIF inputs have been just about abandoned except for a few expensive 'Pro' USB audio interfaces
way out of my price range;
or older budget price Win XP era USB audio interfaces that are at least a few years out of production
and mostly out of stock or discontinued..

Either way, general online opinions are that reliable Win 7 drivers [even more so 64 bit]
are an ongoing issue...

Sods Law, the available laptop for the immediate project is Win 7 64 bit.

Just a simple in line converter requiring no drivers would be ideal,
but as I mentioned earlier, it seems all available affordable basic converter products are for audio output only, not input.

Oh well, keep on looking...

Windows 7 Driver 32 and 64 bit -

It has both optical in and out and works up to 96kHz.

Check Amazon (US) and Monoprice.com, ramelectronics.com, all of which have a number of low price options.
