From: r.padgett

Well looks like September 28th 2012 is 50th Barnsley folk club Anniversary, John Booker has set the date with David Burland to use the Trades Club concert room (Friday night) so all expat Barnsley folk club Tykes' keep the date free and come! More later when I have recovered!!

Dave Bottomley likely to coordinate the event any interest here to start with and emails to Barnsley folk club, me or Dave Bottomley to let us know who is interested in coming along

Trades is a 250 seater and lots of space, concert room and bar etc. Massive Hotel 300 yrds away at The Townend with carparking

Ray

I certainly hope to be there but will know nearer the time. The Civic Centre was my first time on stage, about 1966, if I remember correctly and I was a regular until moving away. Many happy memories. Looking forward to it.

Wishing you a Very Happy 50th Anniversary in September. Good to see Folk Clubs not only enduring, but thriving. I owe much to the 'Great Folk Revival' of the 60s for starting me off on my career in Music...it's clubs like Barnsley that enabled that to happen. Congratulations one and all!
                Nigel Paterson, Mandolin, 'The Halliard'.

PS Please give my best regards to Dave Burland

I recall my first ever gig there. It was long ago, when I was trying to play a guitar.I couldn't do it, and gladly abandoned the idea some time afterwards. The club was run by two blokes called 'The Foggy Duo' and was held in a room over a bowling alley. Congrats to you all at Barnsley. Herre's to the next 50 years. Burl.

Looking for any other old Folkies from Barnsley or connected with

May have to trawl the Old Folkies Homes!

Centenary Rooms and the King George and The Alhambra Hotel and the Wheatsheaf were all venues for folky activity and even saw Dick Gaughan in the White Hart! circa 1973 of course there was Foggy Duo too.Now what's the name of that pub at "Bottom of Stainborough Low?"

Good question!

My information suggests that the club first started by a group of walkers and an artist/teacher who had been at teacher training in Wales and is still alive ~ his name Tony Heald!

Early days gave rise to Dave Burland, Dorothy (now Elliott) and Derek Elliott in the Alhambra Hotel. John Booker was around in those early days and folk figured at The Wheatsheaf, Townened. The King George and the local authority run Civic Hall Centenary Rooms (which has a lot to answer for) and John Simmons the Manager

JIm Potter was certainly there in the Civic and Wheatsheaf

All still alive!

Thanks Tig (the Donny Ingrams) have a great do yerselves!

Just listened to Sheff online folk with Dave Eyre, who managed to cover about 5 years of the 50 with Dave Burland and Robin Garside in reminiscences and song!

Plenty to go at then now Mr Eyre (he jested!)

But when you take the cream from the milk what are you left with he might answer!

No mention on the prog:

Foggy Dewo (Danny Clarke and Lenny Wesley)
Jim Potter
Derek and Dorothy Elliott (they were there!)
Audrey Galley
Betty Martin (nee Shaw)
and if course all the unaccompanied singers and Longsword team members who worked for a living, and contributed in very many ways and continue to make ascene and audience

Current Linda Harris, Sarah, John Platt, Dave Bottomley, Johnny Booker who was a very early supporter and knows how to enjoy himself and countless others!

I could get a bit annoyed, but tis too late! Good music nonetheless

More power to your elbow all of you Dave Eyre, Robin and Dave Burland

Wow, what a do last Friday! It was a full house. All the artists were associated with the club over the years plus appearances from Tony Heald who formed the first folk club in Barnsley and the Barnsly Longsword Team. Thanks to Dave Bottomley for organising, Dom and Pete from Blackbush for doing the sound, Dave Lee for doing the door, Laura Hewitt for serving the Pie and Peas (even though she's veggie), Linda Harris for doing the money, Ray Padgett for organising the afternoon do to Barnsley Trades Club for having us, and to you for coming!

There is some great coverge in the second section of this weeks Chronicle - a whole page with photos and there are loads more on the photo section of their website.

You can also listen to /download the podcast of last Friday's Thank Goodness it's Folk with Dave Burland and Robin Garside talking about our 50th Celebration and the early days of Folk in Barnsley here, available for the next few weeks.

Alan Wood's singing and guitar work was applauded as was Michell Howell for her singing

Dave Lee supported the afternoon job and looked after the cardboatd box ~ thanx

Cheers to all
