Subject: Lyric request: Mockingbird
From: Peter
Date: 11 Nov 96 - 12:03 PM

I have a special request:

A close friend of mine just had a baby and wants to sing the song mockingbird to him. I am not sure of all the words to it. If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it:

"Everybody have you heard, Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird And if that mockingbird don't sing Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring..."

It's on DT called HUSH, L'IL BABY.

You'll also find a version in Rise Up Singing.

Bert.

Hush little baby, don't say a word, Momma's gonna buy you a mockingbird.

If that mockingbird don't sing, Momma's gonna buy you a diamond ring.

If that diamond ring turns brass Momma's gonna buy you a looking glass.

If that looking glass get's broke Momma's gonna buy you a cart and goat.

If that cart and goat turn over, Momma's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.

If that dog named Rover don't sound You're still the sweetest little baby in town.

If that looking glass get's broke Momma's gonna buy you a Billy goat

If that Billy goat wont pull, Momma's gonna buy you a cart and bull

If that cart and bull turn over, Mama's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.

If that dog named Rover don't bark,Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart.

If that horse and cart fall down,You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

(needed another line and a couple others rearranged...I think this is close to the orig., although, we always sang "papa"

Bill- Way I heard it was ... "If that horse and cart fall down, You'll be the sweetest little baby in town."

reflecting a "when cockle shells turn silver bells" or a "when hell freezes over" philosophy.

If that billy goat falls down you neednt worry cause youre still th sweetest little Girl/boy in town.

I have been singing this version to my kids/granchildren for some 30 years now and I got it out of a nursery rhyme book.

Hush, little baby, don't you cry,
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.

And if that mockingbird won't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.

And if that diamond ring won't shine,
Mama's gonna buy you a big valentine.

And if that valentine doesn't rhyme,
it's bound to be near your bedtime.

So go to sleep little baby because when you wake up everything will be just fine.

Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.

And if that mockingbird don't sing,

And if that diamond ring don't shine,
Mama's gonna give you a silver dime.

And if that silver dime don't pay,
Mama's gonna buy you a stack of hay.

And if that stack of hay don't burn,
Mama's gonna buy you a butter turn.

And if that butter turn don't crank,
Mama's gonna buy you an Army Tank.

And if that Army tank don't roll,
Mama's gonna buy you a can of Skoal.

And if that can of Skoal don't dip,
Mama's gonna buy you a potato chip.

And if that potato chip is flat,

There are several versions of the song, but the most common lyrics are:

Hush, little baby, don't say a word,
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing,
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.
And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass.
And if that looking glass gets broke,
Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat,
And if that billy goat doesn't pull,
Mama's gonna buy you a cart and bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over,
Mama's gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
And if that dog named Rover won't bark,
Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart.
And if that horse and cart fall down,
Well you'll still be the sweetest baby in town.
