Lewes Saturday Folk Club Workshop No 161
WILSON FAMILY
WORKSHOP: MINING SONGS & SONGS of GRAEME MILES
Saturday 21st. July 2012
10.45 a.m.- 4.45 p.m. Places £30
Elephant & Castle White Hill Lewes BN7 2DJ

The glorious, powerful vocal harmony of The Wilsons of Teesside has rung out in folk clubs & festivals – and last year in the Royal Albert Hall – for nearly 40 years. Tom, Chris, Steve, Ken & Mike sing traditionally-oriented songs with deep understanding, joy & good humour. They shared a close friendship with Peter Bellamy & cite him as a major influence, along with The Copper Family, The Young Tradition, The Watersons, Johnny Collins, Jim Mageean & Fred Jordan amongst many others.

In the workshop The Wilsons will sing & share songs from the mining industry, with which they have a close affinity, and some from the superb songwriting of Graeme Miles. Music reading is not needed. There will be plenty of chance to sing, try out some harmonies, & discuss the songs in the final 'Big Sing.'

IN THE EVENING THE WILSON FAMILY perform at theELEPHANT & CASTLE
(£8; tickets from club, website or address at end of this post)

They are on at the Rothbury Folk Festival this coming weekend. Concert in the mart on Saturday evening and before that in All Saints Church. Not a bad little festival with plenty of sessions etc. A few decent pubs as well. (Rothbury is in Northumberland, quite a long way from anywhere else!)

If we leave the windows open, Elmore, you may well be able to hear them in New Hampshire. Persuade your local club or concert organisers to invite them over - they are glorious.

Brendan, I have just got back from Rothbury festival and the Wilsons were absolutely "Brilliant" No other word for it. Their concert spot in the Mart (great venue) was them at their best. Valmai I'm sure you'll have a wonderful day with them at Lewes.

Many thanks to the Mudelf for correcting the name of the thread. We have a few workshop places left and a reasonable number of evening tickets, but they are going fast.

Just a few worskhop places and about 15 evening tickets left now. Email me (valmaigoodyear[at]aol[dot]com) to reserve either, and bring the right money in cash on the day.

They're the best thing since sliced bread . GREAT,AWESOME and much to be admired as a fabulous entertaining unacompanied singing group - ALL with lovely, endearing, and approchable personalities, both On and Off - stage. You won't regret going to see them - get yourself there. Unfortunately Lewes is a long way from where I live , but I would dearly like to be there .
This isn't fussy, wishy-washy music , but full volume that 5 brothers can muster - and they make the same volume with / or without PA.
If you live in the area ,do yourselves a favour , pamper yourselves and get yourselves there - YOU'LL LOVE IT .

It was, of course, fantastic, and we sold out. The chaps gave 100% all day in the workshop and in the evening. They even adapted to Harveys Best Bitter with no apparent physical distress. We were all thrilled to bits with them and hope to lure them back one day.

A friend who lives about 300 yards away from the Elephant & Castle, the pub where the Lewes Saturday Folk Club meets, commented on Facebook that she enjoyed The Wilsons in bed last night while her husband was out at work.

Actually my friend is pretty super, but the point was that she could hear the Bros as she lay in bed 300 yards away.

Well done Valmai for bringing the Wilsons South and putting on such a wonderful day of entertainment. The workshops during the day were inspiring and excellently performed, and the full to the rafters club on the evening was awsome, with the Family in full flow. Well Done again and get them back soon.
