Precisely, Tyrion isn't the cliche non-human fantasy dwarf, he's just a man with dwarfism. And a great character to boot.

That's how I see him in the show. The realistic part for me is that he has to deal with very real prejudice because of his dwarfism. Much like it might happen in the real world that we live in currently.

Fantasy Horror has had a strong representation on TV / Film for years now, though I tend to think that they take it more seriously in the States than here in the UK, hence the productions intended for an adult rather than kid audience.

Currently I'm following 'Grimm' which is an entertaining - if not terribly challenging - twist on folklore about supernatural beasties. 'The Walking Dead' good solid zombie series. 'Trueblood' vampires and assorted other supernatural beings in the US's deep south. And both lastly and leastly 'The Vampire Diaries' which is pretty weak and not a patch on the rest, actually I've rather lost track of that one. But overall it's really overdue time that Fantasy was able to shake off the horror and just be itself. But still treated as adult entertainment rather than for children.

GRRM's SoIaF is currently at seven volumes and he is said to intend to complete the series with a further two volumes. HBO's GoT is therefore only a third of the way in, I hope the production continues to inspire sufficient audience ratings to ensure they keep making them!

Tyrion remains my favourite character and he's superbly played by Peter Dinklage. One wonders if it had been written as a screenplay from the first rather than an adaptation of a series of novels, whether a dwarf would ever have got a look in as such a central figure in a television series, apart from as some kind of magical being. Rather an irony also that some of the only acting roles available for actual dwarves are as non-human fantasy figures rather than regular human beings with dwarfism.

Agreed GS - About time fantasy got it's due 'airtime'. Oddly enough, coming round to music, it seems to have almost coincided with the recent upsurge in folk music on mainstream media. Wonder if the two are related? Hmmm - Probably not :-)

Others on TV recently I would view have been 'kids' ones - Doctor Who and Merlin for example. About time the adult genre was presented too!

I watch it, and now am reading it. For the first time, well I guess it's since LOR, fantasy on telly has been treated seriously and had some proper money thrown at it. Wonderful production with real acting and everything. I tried to watch 'The Lengend of the Seeker' recently, but the whole production was tacky and the acting was dire, just like most fantasy usually is. Hopefully LOR & GOT represent a sea change for filmed fantasy. It CAN be done well, and it does get audiences when done well too.

Personally, I've always found Martin's stuff to be unreadable. I didn't get past chap. 1. of the first vol. of 'Game of Thrones'.

I am just getting into the series, having read all the books, just finished the first season. Very true to the book except for having to cast the horsewoman as an adult instead of the barely-pubescent girl she really (TiC) is, or it would have been kiddie porn.

Spaw, the extra flopping boobs is for the backstory - they can't put it into the narration as there isn't any, nor into anything that wouldn't be boring if there weren't boobs. Not dumb, actually, as an approach...

Anyone think anybody else was poorly cast? I seem to hear a general consensus of opinion (TiC again) that the casting, for those who'd already read the books, is superb.

There is a feature on the DVD of the first season where the designers talk about the opening sequence while the credits are running. I was surprised to hear them say that they tried to show the curve of the earth because this world of Game of Thrones takes place inside of a sphere. Was anyone else aware of this?

The filming of the first season was done mostly in Ireland. The filming for the second season has been done in Northern Ireland, Malta and Iceland, I believe. There is a place in Malta (I believe) that closely resembles (or really works) what Kings Landing would look like. Iceland would be for scenes north of the "wall." It's really not very difficult; oh, and don't forget - the episodes are coming. Cheers.

The Dexter books are well worth reading. But keep in mind that the story lines are very different from the TV series. The same is true for "The Walking Dead".

Excellent series. I have just been given part of series two, it is out there to download if you are into that. It is made in Northern Ireland, I was ove last year and visited the set.

Currently watching Dexter, I hadn't heard of it until recently, got all 6 seasons,so watching them back to back. Big fan of Boardwalk Empire too, second season even better than the first.

My wife and I are IN LOVE with "Game of Thrones" and cannot wait till Sunday evening. We will have to tape it since we'll be driving home from San Antonio, but it will be viewed immediately upon our return.

Gee, as for the sex - it's in the book, too. We let out thirteen year-old watch the shows and he loves it. We do make him put a pillow over his face for the sex scenes, but, there are not that many of them. Regarding the books, my wife and I are staying just ahead of the t.v. series with our reading. We love the books, we love the series, we love the cast (except for the Lannister clan) and simply cannot wait for the next episode to begin. Long live House Stark, and remember - the episodes are coming. Cheers.

we just finished the first season of Borgia, available in Netflix. Some of it was hard to stomach and the hypocrisy reeked, but its subtitle, "the Original Crime Family" certainly fit.

Books or movies, not my cup of tea.......on the other hand, I had really gotten into "Luck" and they cancelled the damn thing because 3 horses had died on the set. Not good of course but I really was sad to see it go........

Thizzeer iz one uv them dirty shows on HBO. I tuned in just in time to hear a bunch of grungy lookin' dudes wearing some animal fur and old rags talkin' real funny with some sorta' accent. They all got strange names too it seems. Next thing that pops up on the screen is some blonde girl gettin' nailed doggie style with her boobs floppin' around and all......do you believe that? Right there in front uv gawd and everybody.......I turned it off.

I've been hearing about it for a while from some European friends on a film and theater discussion thread. There is a great cast in it. But I don't get any cable or premium channels, just over the air and NetFlix. I see the first season is available via disc from NetFlix.
