I heard from Any Turner that Dave Parry died from cancer last week.

Dave was the fine melodeon player who performed as a duo with Dave Townsend as The Blades during the nineties. Who could forget the leather-clad half of the two Daves playing unreasonable chords to punk-ish anthems around the clubs and festivals?
He was also part of English country music band The Geckoes, player for Rogue Morris, and I daresay a number of other Oxfordshire-based projects I'm unaware of.
Also, a good friend!

Thanks for letting us know George. He will be missed! I have added his name to the Mudcat 'In Memoriam' thread.

My condolences to all who miss him.

Peter

Is this the same Dave Parry that sang with Stan Rogers, Grit Laskin and the gang in Toronto in the mid-70's, and also acted in various medieval plays there? I remember him as the lead in Volpone (I was a student at U of T back then, and he was kind to small fry like me.)

RIP.

Lynn

No, the folksinger and drama scholar David Parry from Toronto (and later Ottawa) died in 1995. There is a brief Wikipedia article about him at this link.

The Dave Parry to whom Howard is referring was a performer at Mystic on June 11 of 1995, and died suddenly of a heart attack on June 13, aged 52. I still remember the shock and astonishment that reverberated through the community.

I remember asking David Parry if he was the Dave Parry on an English CD I had (can't remember which or what band) he wasn't.
I guess D Parry is a talented though unfortunately way too short lived name.

Read a really fine tribute from his long term friend and colleague, Andy Turner at http://www.froots.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6577 along with photos contributed by Andy, Ian Anderson and myself.

I used to call dances with a band that Dave worked with in Sussex - Maxwells Demon. He was one of these salt-of-the-earth dance band musicians; a brilliant punch and lift to his playing without any flashiness - a delight to dance to.

Here's a video of Dave playing with Geckoes at that dance at Lewes festival last autumn , and another of an acoustic performance by the band earlier the same day .

Gosh, I'm going to miss him - and not only as a superb musician, but mostly a as a supremely witty, intelligent and downright lovely friend.

Sorry - I should have identified myself in that last post. I'm a bit flummoxed at the mo.

Good to see these videos, Andy.

Deep commiserations to all who knew and loved Dave. And from me, particular sympathy to his fellow members of Geckoes. I know how it feels for a band to cope with the death of a centrally important musician that you have played with for many years. You feel like it is the end and you don't want to carry on.... but you should!
I can still sometimes image that I can hear Naomi's fiddle and hammer dulcimer when we are playing arrangements that she shone on; and I am sure that it will be the same for you with Dave.
