Mahalo instruments seem to get mixed reviews. Some like them and some claim they are only fit for firewood. They do tend to come with pretty lousy strings, though. I'm not familiar with the baritone but I have tried a couple of their entry level brightly coloured sopranos and the strings were truly dreadful. They don't ring, just go plunk so buy another set of strings (or two) and change them straight away.

You might get some good advice on the Ukulele Underground forum. They are a pretty helpful bunch.

I have a Kala mahogany baritone and love the tone. Got it virtually new, with case, extra Aquila strings and a chord book, through craig's list for about half the list price of the instrument alone. If you have the luxury of time, you may manage to find a similar steal, with the added benefit of being able to check out the instrument thoroughly before buying. Near-new ukuleles turn up regularly; being cheap, they're attractive to people with good intentions but no long-term follow-through.

I think that the Chinese Mahalos can be good. I upgraded the tuners on mine and got a good fret job. The sound is good, not what you'd expect of a higher priced instrument but still pretty good for the money. Listen to a few before you buy. I've heard some that sound pretty good, and others that are lifeless. Thanks, BlueJay

Mahalo instruments are as good as ever. Before I bought one, I recommend looking under the bed one more time, and then having a talk with your niece. It may turn up.

Greetings to all!
I need to get a new Baritone Ukulele & would appreciate brand suggestions.
Recently my el cheapo Mahalo bari uke was stolen (well, it's missing after some "friends/acquaintances" of my niece recently visited) and I need to replace it, but I'm not sure what brand to buy. I can't spend too much of the old social security check, hopefully less than $200. Less than $100 would be better, but I know prices have gone up since I bought the old one years ago. I guess I'll need a decent padded gig bag too, so hopefully that won't be too much more.
Believe it or don't, my old Mahalo had good intonation & was really easy to play. I don't imagine that the ones they make nowadays are very good. I'm hoping for something not made in China. I do not mean to insult China--I just haven't found any Chinese made musical instruments that I've liked.
