Subject: Baby Shark (Kleiner Hai ) German & English Song
From: and e
Date: 04 Apr 12 - 03:39 PM

Greetings,

I am interested in finding more about the children's song "Baby Shark" -- called "Kleiner Hai" in German.   There are numerous videos in German and English on Youtube but I haven't been able to date the song...

Could you please post when & where you first learned the song?

BABY SHARK SONG

The fun of this song is in the actions. As the shark gets bigger, so does its mouth you make with your hands and arms.

Lyrics:
(shark mouth with hands connected at wrist)
Baby shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Baby shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Baby shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Baby shark

(shark mouth with forearms connected at elbows)
Momma shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Momma shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Momma shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Momma shark

(shark mouth with full arms)
Daddy shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Daddy shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Daddy shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Daddy shark

(same as Daddy, but with fists instead of fingers to look like no teeth)
Grandpa shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Grandpa shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Grandpa shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Grandpa shark

(swimming crawl motion with arms)
Swimmer dude, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Swimmer dude, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Swimmer dude, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Swimmer dude

(hand on top of head like shark fin. Other hand rubbing stomache with hungry look on face.)
Hungry shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Hungry shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Hungry shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Hungry shark

(backcrawl swimming motion with arms)
Swam away, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Swam away, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Swam away, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Swam away

(same backcrawl, with very frantic actions)
Swam too slow, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Swam too slow, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Swam too slow, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Swam too slow

(hop on one leg to beat)
Lost a leg, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Lost a leg, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Lost a leg, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Lost a leg

(hand on head like shark fin. Other hand rubs stomache with a very satisfied look on face.)
Happy shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Happy shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Happy shark, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Happy shark

(push cellphone numbers to beat)
Call 9-1-1, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Call 9-1-1, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Call 9-1-1, Doh-doh, doh, doh
Call 9-1-1

(make any dieing actions you want. finger across neck, grabbing heart, fainting away,...)
It's too late, Doh-doh, doh, doh
It's too late, Doh-doh, doh, doh
It's too late, Doh-doh, doh, doh
It's too late

(point to your bottom)
That's the end, Doh-doh, doh, doh
That's the end, Doh-doh, doh, doh
That's the end, Doh-doh, doh, doh
That's the end

Notes: I have been able to find a GERMAN version of this song. I am a little surprised that I can't find it mentioned on Mudcat.

yes yes yes !

This is a kids' camp kind of song.
When I learnt it,
we were a bunch of adults on a weekend retreat
for our Catholic parish.
A Dominican friar led the retreat, and he taught us to act this out,
in English.
When we got through the whole thing, we were all gasping for breath
and Father Bob said, "that was like a cardio workout. "

The way he taught it to us, it has no melody or tune to speak of.
It is somewhere between a chant and a rap.
The rhythm is everything.
Fr. Bob, the Dominican (that's O. P., not the caribbean),
did the non-verbal parts as a "ba ba, ba ba, ba-ba"
that sounded like bebop scatting.
The more so as they become syncopated and play against the One.

The original post in this thread, from 2012,
has every verse the way I remember learning it,
that you have three lines, where the verbal phrase
is followed by the scatting,
and the fourth line you just holler out that verse's bunch of words
and then you get to gasp for breath between verses.

Just listened to the YouTube videos linked by Joe Offer in an earlier post on this thread.
For the record, Father Bob had us sing it A WHOLE LOT FASTER ...

now, I sniffed around online and
there is an album, "Après Ski," from 2008 or 2009
which is a European MegaMix greatest hits collection of some kind.
One of them is "Kleiner Hai" and the artist
is identified as "Joy Lilli,"
this is a name that connects to this tune and no other --
nothing else in a Google search.

The record label, according to Amazon which lists the recording, is
BGM Productions.

The Amazon page lists sixteen songs/tracks, a different artist for each.
"Kleiner Hai" is track no. 8.

Here's a sample of others:

Du hast den schönsten Arsch der Welt, feat. Mazz

Schneewalzer - Wir sind die Meister, feat. Die wilden Buben

Schunkel Walzer Medley (Kleine-Kneipe-Mix), feat. Die Inselfeger

Sie liebt den DJ, feat. John Wendlow

Ü 30, feat. Joe Dankel

I guess that gives an idea.

Believe it or not, the BBC has a four-and-a-half minute video report
on how Kleiner Hai / Baby Shark went from
Germany to Korea and
is now taking over the world.
I'll see if I can make a link.

As there may be readers who don't bother with even
the blue clicky links to the information on the videos,
here is an explanation
(which will be redundant to the rest of you).

Joe Offer's initial post to this thread disclosed that
the "Kleiner Hai" crowdsourcing video hit
had featured artist "Alemuel."

If you click on the BBC's Baby Shark four-and-a-half minute news video,
you will meet a German lady named Alexandra Müller or Mueller.
She is the performer on the German video version of this song.
"Ale-" comes from Alexandra, "-Muel" comes from Mueller.
Thus, Alexandra Müller is/was "Alemuel."

The BBC report is careful to suggest that, although documentation is hard to come by,
the song about the sharks possibly predates "Kleiner Hai" and
may have been around for some time already.
But in what language, one wonders.
Fräulein Müller states that she "learned" the song --
NOT that she wrote it herself.

How, I wonder, would it be possible to trace this further back?

Here's a thought:
When I learned the song with my fellow Catholic parishioners
at our weekend retreat, with the priest from the Dominican Order,
the verses were somewhat different.
Most pointedly,
we did NOT begin with the baby of the species.

So maybe the original (?) version says "Shark" in the title,
but not necessarily "Baby" shark.

In the interest of variations on this song,
I'm going to summarize the lyrics on the version I learned.
Not spell them out, as in earlier posts here;
just supply those few words, per verse, which change each time;
the rest is presumed.

THE VERSION FROM THE CATHOLIC RETREAT

Papa Shark! (four times, with scatting)

Mama Shark!

Baby Shark!

Grandpa Shark!

... I forget !... something about Swimming!

Saw A Shark!

Swimming Faster!

Shark Attack!

Lost My Arm!

Lost My Leg!

Lost My Head!

Now, I'm dead!

Gone To Heaven!

(well, what do you expect, from a Catholic parish ...)

As to the German Kleiner Hai, it actually ends with
Alexandra Müller wagging her pointing finger
at the shark that just finished "fressen", stuffing itself,
and chanting :

Böser Hai! dimm dimm dimmdimm dimmdimm
Böser Hai! dimm dimm dimmdimm dimmdimm
Böser Hai! dimm dimm dimmdimm dimmdimm
Böser Hai!

Which I understand to mean:
Naughty Shark!!
Naughty, Naughty Shark!

This version has been copied from an online forum at the website
for the American Camp Association. that's acacamps dot org.

This entry is dated January 2004, and the poster to the forum
was a camper from the Northeast coastal USA.

The post follows a couple of "baby shark" entries on one thread, saying:
"LOL ... my camp's 'baby shark' is really violent compared to yours.
The girls [at camp] love this song.
It was introduced summer of 2000
and it has been sung non-stop since!" endquote

You have been warned, Mudcatters.
This too will be a SUMMARY without spelling out all the repetitions.

The East Coast USA Girls' Camp Version

There was a boy (four repetitions)

and a girl

they went for a walk

they took off their clothes

they went for a swim

and all was quiet

and all was still

except for the SHARKS!

the daddy sharks

the mommy sharks

the baby sharks

the granny sharks

and all was quiet

and all was still

They took off an arm

the other arm

and then a leg

the other leg

and then the head:

the water was RED!

and all was quiet

and all was still

EXCEPT FOR THE SHARKS!

No, the post from which I copied this version
does NOT supply the non-verbal body language,
which would be interesting, I presume, on some verses ...

And here is a video of a quartet of young men,
presumably camp counselors, performing the Baby Shark song
complete with the motions.
They sing it as fast as Fr. Bob the Dominican friar.

Swedish:

Hajarna

Translation:

The sharks

Hajarna is a children's song that exists in many languages ??and with different melodies. In 1996, En Pojkagtig orkester[1] made a Swedish blues-inspired version that was widely distributed in preschools and after-school centers. The song also appeared in the film Selma & Johanna – a road movie. The text was discussed on Svenska Dagbladet's editorial page and critics said that blood was not a suitable subject for children's songs.

An electronic version of the song in German, Kleiner Hai (Dim Dim) by Alemuel (Alexandra Müller), became a minor hit on Youtube in 2007 and entered the top charts in Germany and Austria. An English-language version, Baby Shark, produced by Korean children's education company Pinkfong, became a YouTube phenomenon in 2018 with over 2 billion plays and chart positions worldwide.

The song probably started as a campfire song. The different versions of the song have in common that they mention different sharks from a family - often mom, dad and baby shark. This is interspersed with a simple melody that everyone can sing along to. Even people are usually included in the lyrics; they must then escape from the sharks, or be eaten.

The 2003 CD Learn & Play: Songs for Young Children by Beth and Scott Bierko has the baby shark song.

Purchase here: https://www.amazon.com/Learn-Play-Beth-Scott/dp/B00009952O

Scott Bierko wrote in an email dated 15 Aguust 2019:

We did not write it [baby shark]. We heard it while we were setting up to do a show
at a summer camp, Camp Kiwi, in Rockland County, NY. I’m going to guess
that was around 1996-98. A counselor was singing (and moving with it) it
with her kids. We thought it was hilarious.

"Baby shark, do do do (3x)" (with clapping motion like shark's mouth
opening...)
"Mama shark, do do do (3x)" (clapping again, with whole lower arms)
"Papa shark, do do do (3x)" (with whole arms)
"Grandma shark, do do do (3x)" (with lower arms and fingers turned in to look
like toothless gums)
"I went swimmin', do do do (3x)" (with 'swim' arm motions)
"Lost an arm, do do do (3x)" (with 'swim' with only one arm)
"Lost a leg, do do do (3x)" (one armed 'swim' while hopping on on leg)
"Then I died, do do do (3x)" (I don't think there are motions for this. But
who knows.)
"I'm just kidding, do do do (3x)"
"I'm OK, do do do (3x)"

Well, this is a stretch, but the most fun skit at girls camp
was shared to my girls by some young men. I guess the name
was "Happy Shark". There is a tune that I cannot convey in a
message, but the girls mimed a shark as it went through
various experiences. No moral, just fun. The words were
something like:
Happy shark, du-du, du-du-ta-du
Happy shark, du-du, du-du-ta-du (this is the chorus)

baby shark
momma shark
dadda shark
grandma shark

swimmer swims
sees a shark
swims real fast
shark attack!

Mr. crab
bites the shark
shark gets mad
eats the crab
happy shark

lost a leg
happy shark

You can now tell it was originally a scout skit, but the
singing and motions and surprise ending make it a lot more
fun than what appears here...

You know this. You've done this before in youth group. It's the only talent I could think of.
Baby shark, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (gesture with index finger and thumb opening & closing)
Momma shark, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (hands sideways quickly opening & closing like a clam)
Daddy shark, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (hands sideways, arms & hands clap)
Seminal shark, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (right hand doing the seminal chop on to the left hand)
Going swimming, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (swimming gesture)
See a shark, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (gesture of a fin)
Swim faster, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (more emphatic swimming gesture)
Shark attack, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (the large arm/hand clap of the daddy shark)
CPR, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (two hands locked and go towards chest as though doing CPR).
It's not working, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (doing the CPR gesture quicker)
Going to heaven, doo doo doo doo doo x 3 (angel wings out to the side)

Gonna see Jesus! [don't see gesture as the camera is not pointed at leader]

The Swedish movie with "Baby Shark", Selma & Johanna : - en roadmovie,
was put in several children's movie festivals internationally.

In 1997 in Frankfurt, Germany it won People's Choice and Honorable
Mention at the Lucas-Festival.

1998 in won People's Choice in Montreal, Canada and Peoples Choice
in Seoul, South Korea (at the MoMo film festival).

With the film being played at children's film festivals in Germany
and Korea and popular at those festivals, this would help explain
why those two countries picked up the "Baby Shark" song.

Here is a song that we leaned from a second grader at the St. Thomas
School in West Hempstead, New York (see Figure 1). As with many camp
songs before it, it deals with a new folk hero -- only this folk hero, so to speak,
is a movie villain. And, as with many folk stories, its basis is in literature that
is not anonymous. Do any of your students know it? Can they figure out
which gestures to use?

JAWS

[music]

Speak:
Here's a story   du du, du du du    repeat
About jaws    du du, du du du    repeat
Baby jaws    du du, du du du    repeat
Giant jaws    du du, du du du    repeat
Lady swimmin'    du du, du du du    repeat
Spies the lady    du du, du du du    repeat
Shark ahead    du du, du du du    repeat
Pass the salt    du du, du du du    repeat
And the pepper    du du, du du du    repeat
Mmm good    du du, du du du    repeat
Swims away    du du, du du du    repeat
That's the story    du du, du du du    repeat
About jaws      du du, du du du    repeat

We've omitted some of the lyrics in this song that are risque. Do your
students know them? For obvious reasons, don't let them sing the spicier
lyrics in class; just mention that you know of their existence and see if
you get any snickers or chuckles.

Lady: fluff hair, move hips, anything outrageous
Pretty lady: same thing as lady
Swimmin': one hand flat in air, place other hand over it, a little bit above
Shark attack: put hands in air and scream
Man: make muscle man imitations
Muscle man: same thing as man
Save you: same as swimmin'
More: snaps
Jaws 2: show 2 on fingers

Subject: RE: Origins: Baby Shark (Kleiner Hai ) Song
From: and e
