I didn't complain here because it was my fault for not sliding some oil to her when she needed it (musical reference alert). Yes, I actually killed a corolla through neglect. Then our landlady told us to declutter or be evicted, so we did. But, she's evicting us anyway. We need a place by the end of the month. Single parent, twin teenagers just finishing their junior (3rd) year of high school, and 2 small cats. Just as well I don't believe in curses. Are we having fun yet? |

From: Mrrzy Date: 17 Apr 12 - 06:11 PM there is a possible 6-months lease on a small apt available now BUT I have finally actually gotten to talk to a lawyer and she can't evict me just by sending me a letter, she has to take me to court, and until then there is really nothing she can do if I stay here... so I am worrying more now about the car, and will continue to fight the eviction. If we can stay another year, hostile landlord or not, the boys will graduate and I can go live with my mom who will need me by then, is the plan. I am relieved about the court thing - since she has filed no papers, I have more time than I thought. I was under the impression that she could just show up with bailiffs and they would toss all my furniture out into the street... So back to trying to buy a car! I think the analogy I was not thinking of was Herding cats. But spitting on a fish sounds about right too! |

My brother is in Real Estate (in California) and they do some property management - there are people in California who make it a practice to rent then get themselves evicted by landlords who are so desperate to have them leave that they pay them to move, even though they stopped paying rent months earlier. I know that's not where you're at - those people are taking advantage of laws set up to help someone like you. |

Did the clutter/damage go beyond a normal accumulation of stuff or a normal amount of wear? Things can be fixed, as you say, and if they continued while you had leases renewed, it seems to suggest it wasn't a concern. I was in an apartment for 2 1/2 years between divorce and buying a new home. When they inspected there were some splashes on the wall, slight stains next to the trash can where tomato sauce or tea bags had splashed on their way into the trash. Even with regular wiping down, the spots left stains - nothing structurally wrong, just a cosmetic thing that paint will solve. She commented that since we'd been there over two years it was covered as a reasonable kind of mark to expect. If I'd stayed less than 2 years I might have had to pay for paint. |

It has now been permanently "on" for well over a year. The mechanic said there are lots of things, some major, some minor, that can cause the light to go on. When it's flashing that usually means a major problem, when it's just on - maybe it's a major problem but it might not be. My car has been running fine so maybe you can get away with it for a while...Good luck!!!! |

From: Richard Bridge Date: 04 May 12 - 08:58 AM If you are not a high mileage driver go onto turbobricks (website - google) and start looking out for a nice used 2 or 7 series Volvo estate - you will get one as cheap as chips, they are spacious and comfortable. Remember they are 20 years old and budget for maintenance and check the oil and water daily and keep a spare fuel pump relay and you will probably be fine for another 10 years. They rust less than almost any other car. The catalyst equipped ones should fly through emissions testing (smog testing). But they do do only about 25 to the UK gallon (less of course to the US gallon). |

SOMEtimes, merely taking off and replacing the gas cap will clear it. If not, at my Ford dealership, it costs $68 + 13% tax to clear it... or $10 cash for my buddy at my service station. He never wants the money but I tell him if he doesn't take it I will drop it on the ground and walk away and that would be rude so, "Please don't embarass me." |

Early last year the "engine malfunction" light started to come on at frequent intervals, accompanied by an apocalyptic bleeping noise and the car going into limp mode. The first time it happened I called out the AA man, who, having plugged in his diagnostic gizmo, told me that it was something to do with my turbo overboost (or was it underboost?) and that he couldn't fix it and it might cost me hundreds. Well, I noticed that all I ever had to do to get the car out of limp mode and banish the warning light was to turn off the ignition and turn it back on again. After a spate of this happening, well, it stopped happening, for over a year. Last week it did it again, twice. Same solution: ignition off then on again. It's done 300 miles since the last time and the car goes like a bomb. In fact, since the first time it happened, I've done 30,000 miles trouble-free. I sort of know when my car is playing up and I don't need nannying by an onboard computer. And if I think I hear a funny noise, I always try the time-honoured solution first: turn the radio up! |

General Practitioner referral notification is another safeguard. Or one could sell election toys on pinterest. Or sell hedge funds to protect $ should Trump win. A bit of driving and the battery should get back into order, unless it actually needs replacing. Oh, wait, though, I don't know the automatic-car version of this… If it's not the battery, the second most common thing is plugs 'n' points, which aren't a dear thing to fix. |

Her final involuntary admission led to her "escaping" so she was then committed for long enough for treatment to work & last I heard back with family & friends, working & part of society, no longer a 20-ish bag lady. |

Roommate concussed, pressing charges, and getting son kicked off lease. Cops would/could neither arrest nor take son in for paych eval. I had to go to magistrate to get separate warrant for psych eval. Roommate had to go to magistrate, after ER, to get charges pressed. No idea what happens when both mental and criminal things going on. Will keep you posted. The only thing the cops eould do was put in a restraining order. I don't think they believed us that it wasn't a domestic abuse thing. I am once again disgusted with US health care. |

So far it hasn't been, but he continues to live on the edge. Lots of lost jobs, disputes with co-workers, and of course he knows better than anyone the truth of what is going on when others are "wrong, but blame him." In his telling, the bosses always end up agreeing with him, but somehow still seem to let him go. He's mostly hardest on family members, so we just stay out of his way. I hope there is a good outcome for you in this. |

After that, son lived in a hotel for a while, then opted to be homeless. I was handing out soup last winter solstice and gave him soup before I recognized him. He was unpleasant to me, but not belligerent. He would ignore me if he saw me on other occasuons. He posted something weird about martial arts and the cops once, he still has Facebook. Then (what keb refers to) was I heard while I was out of town that he got arrested, and when I looked up public records there were 3 things, an assault arrest in Feb, and a lewd and lascivious plus another assault and some emergency order thing from June 5. I called the jail, he'll be there till court July 1, no bond. He is in quarantine or was when I called because everybody gets quarantined, he has not asked for counseling. So other people are safe from him right now. I felt more relief than anything. Then I had a long talk with the arresting officer. She did not remember what she arrested him for in Feb but what he did in June was, to my mind, a serious escalation of his mental illness, being that he grabbed a woman by the tit and then dropped trou. She and her friend brought the willywagging charges, the emergency thing is a restraining order against him. I have emailed the prosecutor of record and the commonwealth's attorney asking if the case can be moved to mental health court but have not heard back. So one hand, relief for safety of others; other hand yikes, he has never been sexually violent before, and thinks of women as people (or at least did growing up). And on the gripping hand, I have no standing, legally, to request mental health court. Probably up to the victims. So, yeah, interesting times. |

Calling police (dicey) or a mental health intervention service that works with police (much better) might get a 72-hour hold in a hospital psych ward, but beyond that, the control is in the hands of the grown child. In college I rented the downstairs apartment in a house owned by friends who lived upstairs. They had an adult son who needed a diagnosis and medications but it took a while before it finally happened for him. If I was home and I heard a pattern of loud stomps on the ceiling I was to race outside, around the back of the house, and up to their back door and let myself in. That happened a couple of times (once it was because the pigs got out of their enclosure and I had to help round them up) before it finally worked - Tommy was there, he was so angry and hurt and sad all at once, and made a declaration that he would kill himself or them - so when the sheriff arrived I was the witness. ("Please don't cuff him tightly, he's ill, not a criminal!") That 72 hours made a difference and started him on a path of treatment. Last I heard he has a normal life and a family of his own. It can work. I hope it does for your son also. |

From: Mrrzy Date: 01 Jul 22 - 02:16 PM I got there early and talked to the prosecutor, who taught me the term "therapeutic docket" and said son had to request it. Yikes. It was his actual trial. He claimed that the jail never gave him a PIN so he hadn't been able to hire a lawyer. Offered the choice to continue without one or wait to have one, he opted to proceed without one. He only ran on a bit. Not too psychotic-seeming. Malheureusement. The judge at the beginning asked me if I would help with bail, I said I would help if on therapeutic docket, at which point son told me to leave the courtroom because he "doesn't like" me but he was on video from jail so I just went to the back. He pled Not Guilty to everything, offered no defense, did not cross-examine, guilty on all 3 counts. Prosecutor recommended therapeutic court for sentencing AND HE AGREED! Excellent news! If he complies there will be a lot of therapy and help with housing and employment. If he doesn't, 11 months of jail (12 months, 11 suspended). I don't think failure to comply results in hospitalization, but in loss of suspension of the prison sentence. However, the initial eval may result in instant hospitalization. I was able to say sorry to all the vics, which made me feel better, and they all seemed happy he would be getting treatment, which even more so. 2 of them knew him as a regular homeless guy they saw when going to work on the Downtown Mall. So here is what he actually allegedly did: Vic 1 works in front of a plateglass window fronting on the courtyard son often slept in. One fine day he stood in front of her window with his back to her, pulled his shorts down and wiggled his bare ass at her, turned around and wiggled his front, turned around looking over his shoulder at her and wiggled some more... She moved so her monitor blocked him but he kept at it FOR OVER AN HOUR till her boss noticed, and *he* called the cops. Vic 2 lives somewhere off the Mall and first saw son talking to her landlord in her front yard, then a few minutes later when she looked out the window son was starkers, so she called the landlord, but he (son) got dressed and left. But then later when she came home with groceries he was in her yard and wouldn't leave so *then* she called the cops. Vic 3 is a librarian and knew him, as he came in often to use computers. They were closing because a storm had knocked out the power and when she went to tell him he poked her in the boob. She asked if he needed anything in case he meant to just get her attention and missed her shoulder, but no... Then something happened the judge wouldn't let her talk about but I think she heard about the other stuff and reported it. She was the happiest when he agreed to treatment. So... He should be out of jail once the paperwork goes through. Here's hoping he complies with whatever this therapeutic docket dishes out... So I am on my second gimlet at my fave French restaurant on the Mall... |

From: Steve Shaw Date: 08 Jul 22 - 05:49 AM I had the same kind of problems nine years ago (stenosis, spine protrusions impacting nerves, disc popping out on one side like a chewing gum bubble, another disc gone, etc.) which led to severe pains shooting down both legs on top of the back pain. The surgery completely fixed the leg pains and they haven't come back. The back pain can't be fixed by that surgery but it's eminently liveable with. I have to take an NSAID every day. I think I might have regaled the forum before with my Tramadol horror story. I took it for three weeks only, it stopped working at all after two and I unknowingly became physically dependent on it. I won't dwell, but coming off it was the worst experience of my life. I'm not a doctor and don't issue medical advice. Let's just say that I went back to the doctor who prescribed it for me and gave him a severe bollocking. |

They referred me to the pain clinic. First, it isn't open weekends, and second, they can't take referrals from an ER. Great. Another ER trip Saturday because someone called in a welfare check when I hadn't eaten in 30 hours. Different ER, though. Was out in 2 hours, not 13, and someone looked at my MRI itself, not at the results that said there was nothing wrong. The new look also said nothing wrong. Channeling Larry Niven, I cursed the machine for a lying robot. They gave me percocet and sent me home with a prescription, not with no plan for when it wore off. Meanwhile I had ordered some legal weed extract goo that comes in a syringe you squeeze measured cc's from. When the nausea from the percocet wore off I had a friend dispense 2 ccs of that into a truffle. The corner has turned. Pain only bad, not excruciationg, in several horizontal positions. The goo conked me out by 7.30 last night and I woke up at 3 because I had slept, not from pain. Not trying standing sitting or walking yet. Today pain clinic opens. I might make it to the 18th for the spine clinic after all. |

I would find a bearable position, sleep for 30-90mn, shift and the pain would wake me back up, repeat till no bearable positions. Then transfer to LR yoga mat, too hard to sleep on. Many small plushies, and a footstool with bigger plushies for my lower legs. With the little ones I can shift my pelvis 1 cm *this* way and with the big ones my left calf 1" *that* way and find relatively pain-free positions for a while, but then the pain starts building up so I move the rabbit or whatever a few mm. This is my day... Shifting plushies, going to pee, lying back down to get the pain back under control, shift some plushies, call someone to bring me things. If I find a pain-free position I can *relax* in rather than holding myself in, I can nap. And the leg buckles if I do try to walk on it. |

So a lot less pain while lying down, but very little added ability to do anything else. |

But today I no longer *also* need to guard the injection site, so again, yeah. |

It's under my computer desk and I use the pedals, sometimes without consciously being aware of it, just forward and back and sometimes a gentle run of spins. The prices range from ok to ridiculous but mine is fairly cheap. One disadvantage is its weight so you might need someone to place it in the position you want or look at the lighter weight models. |

Over 10 years ago, my Hubby was going through the long process associated with medical tests for cancer, diagnosis, treatment planning, waiting for treatment and follow-ups e.g. weeks of radiotherapy, post-treatment prognosis and then waiting for the final all-clear (which technically he still hasn't had). One of his friends who had been through the whole process for a different sort of cancer gave him some useful advice. He said that it is a waiting game. You wait for each step in the process, then wait for the next step and the next step, and it's best to just settle in for the long haul and try not to stress about how long it all takes. Which doesn't help, I know, when you are in excruciating pain but the medical industry works at its own pace, unfortunately. Are you going to reveal what a plushybani is, or is it a secret mystery, not for the uninitiated? :-) |

It was recommended to me by a natural therapy professional about 40 years ago. Caution, if I mix hot water with the powder I always put a heaped teaspoon of powder in a cup, then 1/3 cup boiling water, quickly mix it up and immediately put stir in 1/3 cup of cold water. If you try to drink it with boiling water you could burn your mouth because it retains the heat too well. It has little to no taste, but lemon juice or honey could be added. I only make 2/3 cup because I don't mind the taste, but you could make it a bit more watery. |

Following the knee replacement I got off of oxycodone after 3 weeks, Flexaril after 3 1/2, and Celebrex after a month. It still took another couple of weeks to begin to feel "normal." Prune juice helps (but don't overdo! 1/2 cup twice a day at the most.) Get plenty of fiber in your food (fruit, leafy greens, beans, etc. Steamed spinach is my friend.) Good luck with all of that, juggling the pain and the normal stuff. |

My shrink gave me a huge slew of data questions to ask so decisions have finally been able to be made. Yes, surgery, this year. No, not UVa, their care sucks. Last illustration: I tell both surgeons that PT says my sacrum is misaligned. Ask if it can be seen on scans. UVa doc looks at profile scan, says no. Other doc looks at profile scan, says Um, *rotates view to back* and says Oh, so it is. So PT through Sept, then more tests to verify what damage there is, then fuse L5S1 and replace L4L5. Anterior sirgery only. No bone graft, no bolts outside the spine. Whew. Feels way better to know what is coming. |

When I had an MRI I was told that I could bring in a CD of my favourite music which the staff could play to make me feel more relaxed during the procedure. As it happens, I brought the CD in but chose not to use it and the "music" of the MRI was interesting to me anyway, like a free-form, rhythmic electronic jazz. |

Turns out keto interferes with anesthesia, which I only found out trying to figure out why IV benzoes were so. Not. Calming. Plus I flunked. They can't replace the disk above L5, they have to fuse both above and below. Too degraded. So 2 surgeries: Monday 24th 2 fusions, L4L5 and L5S1, from the front. Weds 26th 2nd op to add the stabilizing Frankensteinesque rods and screws in the back. So Thurs next I go to DC, Friday preop stuff, Mon-Fri in hosp in Reston (any NoVA cattters?), then I hope rehab for a bit. Preop stuff includes some fun things like talking to anesthesia and nutrition (it is going to be *really* hard to be keto on their menu but otherwise I will lose my temper with the nurses and then try to die with all that available medical stuff). Woot! End in sight! |

So, like a person with one hand in a bucket of boiling water, and the other in a bucket of ice, on average you are feeling ok? :-) I think that if you look really, really hard you might see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, and everything will start progressing. There probably will be a lot of obstacles but they should get smaller and smaller over time. The good thing is that you have had the surgery now - but it is still a waiting game until you feel back to some sort of normal health. One day, hopefully soon-ish, you will stop and think, "I'm not in pain!" but that day will probably creep up on you because you will get better and better, bit by bit, day by day. I can't say I'm rooting for you, because that means something totally different here in Oz. But you could tell those fuckers you are rooting for them. LOL |

Ok now we shall um back up a bit: Tuesday had the 2-week post op appt, surgeon impressed with my progress and apologetic about not keeping me keto, then the Xrays showed Content warning gross stuff I was just *full* of shit impacted high up under my ribs with gas trapped behind it, those 2 weeks of what felt like terrible gas pains actually *were* terrible gas pains, all those mauvaises demie-heures spent moaning on the loo after the suppositories had only been cleaning out the vestibule. So, lavage [mais pas au piment au moins!], to wit, saline enema. Whew. That was a horrible 45 mn but after that the intestinal pain is much reduced. Well, was. Ain't pooped since. No urge to poop. Trying to get them to pay attention here but I keep just getting stool softeners and laxatives and I. Am. Not. Pooping. Or. Even. Farting. Much. Got to vape some pot today which made things gurgle a bit. I am thinking of something along the lines of The Raven. And the patient busted palace just outside my chamber door... |

My go-to remedy is psyllium (i.e. the beneficial ingredient in Metamucil without all the unnecessary extra added ingredients) made from the seed husks of the plantain plant, which grows as a weed around here on the footpaths etc. But, recently I found psyllium husk powder in the health food aisle of the supermarket and it works like a charm. It's not a grain. It's pure fibre. Warning: Too much would definitely be too much of a good thing! I use a heaped teaspoon in my fruit and fibre shake which I have three times a week. I use the blender to moosh it all together into a yummy drink. (I like milk, but any liquid would do, but I wouldn't recommend alcohol, sorry! :-D I know you would like something to calm you down a bit, but....) It usually takes about a day for the first dose to have effect so give it time to work its magic. |

It's typically sold in single-dose sachets (the big brand is Fybogel), flavoured with orange or something like that. The instructions tell you that it should be stirred into a bit of water and drunk immediately at the same time as food. I can attest to the fact that if you don't glug it straight away you'll have the devil of a job washing the mucilaginous dregs out of your glass. In water, the psyllium/ispaghula husk forms a thickening gloop that is high in soluble fibre, which helps to soften stools and makes it easier to eliminate them. It's good stuff, but, like everything, it may not be for everyone, so listen to the Mrrzy doc rather than the Mudcat doc. |

Get the pods cut up in water and you have to bread and fry them quickly or it turns into a gelatinous form. Some fruits and vegetables are more effective as fiber than others. Citrus fruit for me - particularly grapefruit - scours on the way through. Here's hoping that everything comes out ok. |

This page says that the powder is more concentrated than the husks so you need to take less of it: Psyllium Husks vs. Psyllium Powder I buy powder - or husks - in a packet, not capsules because capsules are a more expensive way to pay for it. I just looked up the supermarket prices for psyllium husk vs psyllium powder. Husk is $2.82 per 100G and powder is $1.78 per 100G which is odd to me because the powder is more effective compared with the husk, and the capsules are on special at $33 (normally $39) for 160 caps, which is a miniscule amount compared with a heaped teaspoon from a packet of powder. Blending powder or husk into a shake makes it a lot easier to drink, rather than just mixing it into a cup of liquid of your choice because it just becomes part of the drink. I don't even notice it. I made the terrible mistake of trying to take it in a cup of water and it glugged up in seconds, and no matter how many times I refilled the cup and mixed it up it still wasn't going down without a fight. |

The prices have gone up drastically lately and I just looked at the most recently purchased bottle - there is a lack of information about the actual volume of psyllium in the dose of 5 capsules. Looking at the name-brand products offered at Costco (bulk purchasing) the product with sugar and flavor adds up to 90 calories, and the non-sugar one uses Nutrasweet (Aspartame) that I'm allergic to (causes diarrhea). I imagine using unflavored bulk psyllium in a smoothie would be good (I add gelatin for the nail-strengthening properties) but I don't have a smoothie every day. The prospect of a chronic problem with sticky drinking glasses doesn't appeal, but lowering the price per dose does. I will look into it. Spinoff of Mrrzy's interesting times is that the rest of us can reexamine how we are going about self-care. |

I bought a box of 30 of those sachets about 15 months ago (we had a particular medical reason at that time which I won't divulge but which has long passed), and there are still 25 sachets in the box. It's that good. It does seem from reports that the husk is better than the seed. I wouldn't know, because I've only just found out that you can get either. I can't think that anyone would ignore the advice on the packs to take the stuff with water. You'd hardly be able to, even with the most dedicated attempts. |

Psyllium powder swells up dramatically into a gluggy lump which would be impossible to swallow without causing harm. I was in a hurry one day and decided to try mixing psyllium powder in about half a cup of water (which is approximately 125 ml of water) and I had to keep adding more water, more water and it took a good few minutes to finally finish the dose. It was unpleasant as well as annoying to have to deal with the residue in the cup. Never again. I use at least 400 ml of liquid plus the fruit I add to blend into a smoothie. If it is not possible to make a blended smoothie, it would probably work to put at least a cup and a half of liquid in a shaker to mix it all together. If it was me I'd use milk and probably add some chocolate powder or another healthy flavouring (I'd choose low or no sugar) to make it interesting in place of blending the fruit. To repeat one of my previous posts, I use a heaped teaspoon of psyllium powder i.e. about 5g and no more. (I just looked it up and capsules have about a tenth of that amount, so very expensive.) Too much is not pleasant - either the process of taking it or the resulting too-efficient effect. A healthy balance is good, more than a heaped teaspoon is definitely not better in my experience. |

She made the Oz classic sweet treat Lamingtons but she cut up a piece of yellow cleaning sponge - new, not used - and coated the cubes in chocolate icing and then coconut and pi$$ed herself laughing, watching people trying to bite into the sponge while she asked them whether they liked her home cooked treats. They were too polite to tell her that they couldn't eat it and threw it away when they thought she wasn't looking. I don't mind brussel sprouts as long as they are not overcooked and soggy. I've seen a recipe for char grilled, pre-blanched bs's. I haven't tried it but it looks good. I'm a fan of steaming veges in the microwave - highest temperature for a couple of minutes. Especially yummy for broccoli. |

This is a recent study which says something different: Researchers find why kids hate broccoli but what I remember is that as a child matures there is a change which leads to tolerating or even liking veges of the brassica family. My Hubby attempts unsuccessfully to (what he calls) "steam" broccoli in the microwave using half power and not full power for maybe 10 minutes, not just a couple of minutes. I ask him what the definition of steam is, i.e. heating water to a temperature which converts it from a liquid to a vapour. Half power just does this half-ass attempt which creates a pale-beige-green coloured inedible yukky-ness, but full power for a couple of minutes creates beautiful, vibrant green yummy-ness. I never even saw broccoli until I was an adult so I don't know whether I would have hated it as a child. I remember hating soggy over-cooked cabbage, but when I had coleslaw later in life I loved it. |

There was a time when I steamed all vegetables. No longer. The only veg I steam now is chopped cabbage, which stops it from getting waterlogged. Carrots, peas, beans, sprouts, all boiled in slightly salted water. I have been known to roast carrots (and cauliflower). Cauliflower, tenderstem, purple sprouting and the like, I stand them up carefully in the pan with their stalky bits in the water and their tops above, lid on. The tops need less cooking than the stalks, so steaming, which cooks all the bits the same, just seems wrong to me. As for that sort of broccoli we call calabrese, I wouldn't know. We don't give that most boring of veg house room. Each to his own I suppose. The steamer does come in handy for the steaming of Mrs Steve's superb Christmas puddings, which have invariably been stored for a year. |

Carrots, squash, lots of things, though I don't steam them all for me. My dogs get dry food but in the evening I add fresh vegetables, often times cooked. They like veggies raw but love them cooked - then they're "people food" and they show by their interest that this is their favorite. Cooking also means they won't choke on chunks of carrots. |

I'd likely think again if I thought that Mrs Steve and I were in danger of going short of vitamins and minerals, but I don't think that's the case in view of our varied diet. We both eat at least some raw citrus fruit every day, tomatoes play a big part in our diet and we eat green veg until it's coming out of our ears. My childhood abhorrence of greens, triggered by overboiled, dark green school cabbage, has long since evaporated. Certain prescriptive Italian cooks have been known to declare that to leave the kitchen whilst the pasta is boiling is a mortal sin. I feel the same about boiling sprouts, tenderstem or cauliflower, which are all very unforgiving. I'm an obsessive checker for doneness. The only other thing I'd say is that the best way of putting someone off Brussels sprouts for life (apart from overcooking them) is to cook loose, leafy ones, or frozen ones. For me, they must start off like rock-hard, tight little balls. |

Boiling veg might lose you a quarter of vitamin C and about a third of folic acid, though steaming does lose some of each too, but not as much. Folic acid is one of those that it can be tricky to get enough of if you don't eat your greens, but I wouldn't be worrying too much about Vitamin C. Thing is, whether you steam or boil, you're still eating veg, which can't be bad. |

I do one lidded pan cooking because I only have a single electric cooking ring. I put meat in first with a little oil long enough to colour both sides, add a small amount of water, 1/8th to 1/4 of an inch, then add vegetables on top. Work out when to put vegetables in by how long you want to cook them. I do slow, low heat, cooking and I like vegetables like carrots and swede in large chunks. So they go in first after the meat. Mushrooms take a lot less time and things like petit pois just need warming up. I check during advert breaks to make sure the water hasn't boiled away and at the end the little bit of water that is left tastes amazing. Nothing gets thrown away. |

Rehab upped the laxatives till horrible unproductive stomach cramps I put up with for 4 hours [4-8am Tues night/Weds am] hoping they would *become* productive made them call 911. Ambulance, ER. Tranquilizer, pain shot in IV, CT, ultrasound, oh there seems to be some mass in your lower abdomen, follow up with oncology. Yup, looked like cancer. I was tranquil. Another impressively productive enema took care of the rest of the pain, can leave ER. Still tranquul. Oh by the way, then says the ER, rehab has discharged you to home. I am immediately no longer tranquil. All my stuff is at the nursing home and am not well enough to be gome. Now the lucky part: one sis had been blowing through town heading for family thanksgiving, to drop off pie, so I had called a fiend to take custardy of said pie. Friend was thus able to drive me to fetch my stuff and then home. It was so good to be home. My own groceries my own cooking my own delivery places. People came and were helpful (cannot turn on shower, contrils too low, for example), have a great rocking chair, nice to just be me in my house. That lasted a day. Home Weds pm. By Thurs pm abdo pain has me calling people for advice. Friend moved a TV (for me) and chair (for visitor) into bedroom. Friday morning the advice was Call another ambulance. Back to ER. By now I am convinced it cant bw cancer. It has got to be something from the surgery. And indeed, an MRI confirms fluid not a mass. Great. So they Surprise! Did nothing. Sent me home again to pain and pooplessness. I have appointments with my GP (Mon) and the conplicated abdo filks Tuesday. By which time I won't have pooped for another week. I am not tranquil. I wept and wailed and hollered at people in the ER for not being able to TREAT me but it was the ER, and I was not in *deathly* danger. I gotta ask if I were in the UK or Canada or France or anywhere civilized if there would be these kinds of runarounds. I also should be being a lot mire rigorous in keeping keto. Moid needs stabilizing... |

I'm back to stretching now and it helps a lot. Last year I bought a couple of the DVDs released by Miranda Esmonde-White to try her Essentrics program - it's an elaborate stretching routine with the goal of reducing pain. During the summer I subscribed to her streaming service ($15 if you go through her site then log on over the Amazon Fire Stick; it's $20 a month if you join using the Fire Stick, so don't give the extra to Amazon if you can avoid it!) I feel so much better, and in particular my neck isn't stiff like it used to be. Driving and looking over my shoulder - I feel like I can actually turn farther and see better now. And the lower back feels much better. |

That was today's good news. I tell you, it is *never* boring. He did punch the cop who was arresting him for weird sexual behavior, but only because he (my kid) thought he (himself) was a Cherokee chief, so he (the cop) had no right to arrest him (my kid). He seems to have a roof over his head and figured out a disability income. Someone asked me if I wanted to revisit the issues in that case - no way. Leave well enough alone. |

From: Mrrzy Date: 19 Dec 23 - 10:30 AM Once again, surgery (last Weds) went well, but I was bedeviled by a weird rare unusual side issue, of course, why wouldn't I be. Remember dickeys (dickies?)? An article of clothing consisting of a collar from which a rectangle of cloth hung down? One wore them, if one wore them, under open-necked shirts to make it look as if you had another shirt on under it, without actually wearing 2 layers. The collar was the surgical scar. Not a big deal. But the dickey! Oh, wow, they must have been placing, and then tearing off, amazing numbers of monitor sticky things. I have hives like you wouldn't imagine, from my dust mite allergy, and them removing every single layer of skin from my entire chest, up over my shoulders, AND around the surgical site, from them using a type of dressing that rips your skin off when removed. It is a sight, and was absolute TORTURE. On the other hand, they added benedryl into my muscle-relaxer/pain pill mix, and I had a FUN few days of torture before the pain meds started upsetting my stomach. I am *not* a boring patient. |

My mother was allergic to some of the plastic medical tape and so they used paper tape instead. To get a strong enough effect it sometimes involved lots of layers of paper tape. Benadryl is actually quite a miracle drug. I remember hearing a lecture one time where the professor paused the main talk with an aside to discuss that. I don't remember all of the details, except that it has many applications in medicine. |
