For a long time I used Myspace which is now incomprehensible to me, daughter suggested reverbnation which is equally incomprehensible can anyone recommend anything like the original myspace that is easy to use?

I never found MySpace very comprehensible - it seemed to be designed primarily for Windows users.

SoundCloud is much more elegeant.

Pete - use SoundCloud, it is all about the music, not the hype.

To expand on the initial inquiry a bit: I'm interested in finding a free hosting site that, in addition to allowing MP3s, also allows other file types, in particular, MIDIs and PDFs, and allows lyrics and commentary to be posted with the MP3s--it would suffice if the commentary were restricted to text files that could also be downloaded, but ideal would be something like a blog with a flexible, nestable categorization for postings. Some of the folk-song/tune-a-day blogs are close, except that the blog sites I've looked into don't host MIDIs at all and charge extra for MP3s, which I find strange when other sites (like SoundCloud, Google Documents and SkyDrive) offer much more storage space and host MP3s for free.

In light of this, what would you recommend? Is there a site that unifies blogging and free, generic cloud storage, the way it should be done? As it stands, I may have to take an approach similar to what I'm doing on Mudcat: put my blog-like entries on one site, and there provide links to another site, from which associated files can be downloaded.

Alternatively, can a SoundCloud player be embedded on other web pages, in the manner of YouTube videos?

definitely is!

I've never been to SoundCloud - not as pretty as MySpace, but who needs prettiness, what the punters want is music!

And I liked the music, congratulations.

It only took me one unsuccessful click on the orange circle, so I clicked on the title of the song & reached an orange bit that I could click & hear the song.

I'll be recommending SoundCloud to folks who want a music site

Yea thanks Tim, it works on all levels for me. We wanted something unpretentious so people could listen to what we are like, easy to upload and easy to find. Dunno how to link it all together cos I am not that savvy and, if I were honest, far to busy with occupation to spend time to find out but thankfully we have mudcatters to sort it all out for us. Ah Tim, we are going over to the Northwest Folklife Fest in Seattle if you fancy a trip!

On Soundcloud you're not restricted to MP3s; free, it's 2 hours of any size sound file, WAV included, but you get more time if you pay. You can make it more attractive / personal by including visual images for the page as a whole, as well as for each song (click on each image for larger / downloadable versions) & include as many notes / lyrics / links on each piece as you wish.

For example: http://soundcloud.com/sedayne-fiddlesangs/four-horses-to-lark-rise

Like most othe things, it's just a matter of getting used to it. You can also join / create networking groups within Soundcloud, so lots of possibilities really...

Oh - and the site has more bugs than an old mattress, but that's part of the charm. I get the impression it's run by people who care about music. Note that it's always your choice to make a track downloadable or not, or even to make a track public. I've been using & advocating Soundcloud a few years now (I think I was its Millionth Customer) so nice to see it catching on here as the ideal place for folkies to host their craft.

Dunno if it's me kidding myself but the soundcloud tracks seem a bit clearer than myspace, techies i am sure will put me right on this one. I have been comparing them and I am sure it is the case.

Soundcloud is ideal for sharing the fun things that might never get heard otherwise, like this fiddle improvisation field recorded in a north Norfolk church a couple of weeks back.

To answer queries about sharing.

If you click "Share" in the Soundcloud player, a box will open which has html for linking to the track and also for embedding the player in another site.

Here is an example of the player embedded in my Occasional Folk Songs Blog

Soundcloud's linked up to Facebook & Twitter quite nicely too - paste in the HTML and away you go - or set it on automatic, but I find it's nice to keep it personal.

Excellent musical stuff in Cley, SA - I love the north Norfolk coast and you probably were in Cley at the right time, before it becomes stuffed with tourists.

Tootler - loved the recorder music - very sweet indeed.

Thanks, Will, glad you enjoyed it.

SA; enjoyed your improvisation. Great stuff. It reminded me I used to sit for long periods improvising on a recorder. I would start with a tune and see where it took me. It's great for the soul, for exploring music and also exploring your instrument. Far too often folk are discouraged from improvising when they should be encouraged.

I found Reverbnation very straightforward to set up, particularly as I like to include some blurb alongside my tracks. However, just this week it seems to have had a makeover, rather like Myspace did a few years ago. So it's uglier now, though not as derangedly ugly as Myspace got...

I still mourn Myspace, it was great for networking in its heyday.

I came across this site some time ago.

It's a guide to music hosting sites and I found it quite useful.
