Saw Dali's "Last Supper" when I was about 11 or 12... It was on loan at the National Gallery... My mom had to pull me away from it... Does that make Dali my favorite artist??? Nah...

I was in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in February and stood for about 30 mins just staring at his "Wheat Field with Crows". The whole place was full of greatness. Next day I went the The Hague to see Varmeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring". Sublime.

Coming up to date, I like video artists such as Ori Gerst (see here) and just about anything by Wolfgang Tillmans. Ranger1 mentioned Turner: one of the all time greats, but we owe it all to Giotto.

Louise Bourgeoise. I saw some of her work in a book about female artists around twenty years ago. I haven't seen anything that's impressed me quite as much since.

Once upon a time I would have said Magritte

another time Rothko

another time Mondrian or Escher or Klimt

and the pre-Raphaelites and the Impressionists and CAVE ART!

Visual art is, for me, very much like music. It is a mood thing.

It all depends. I like almost all visual art, 2-D and 3-D (and I suppose 4, 5, 6...-D). I'm intrigued by the possibilities in using pure light as an art medium but the technology ain't there yet.

Looking at my office walls I find "Reflections" by Teter, three Navajo rugs, a Navajo sandpainting ("Father Sky") and a copy of a page from the Book of Kells. There's a Navajo folk art statue of a patriotic chicken, a glass clown, and a statue of a young girl which dates from about 1870 or so.

So...my taste is very eclectic and I'll keep it that way, thank you.

Oh, yeah...somewhere I have a Miro lithograph and some other original stuff by folks who aren't quite as well known as Miro.

If you want Ansel Adams in colour look no further than l/h guitar's David Muench. Georgia O'Keefe was married to Alfred Stieglitz, another great American Photographer who was one of the first curators to promote European Modern Art (Picasso et al)in the USA.

I'm lucky enough to have been to both Miro Foundation sites (one in Palma, Mallorca, the other in Barcelona). If you like Miro, you gotta go...they are just wonderful. And I've been to the Frogner Park in Oslo, that's something else! While I was in Oslo I fulfilled an ambition by seeing Munch's "The Scream". I was standing in front of it and my bloody mobile phone went off!

Paul Klee is one of my favorites, too, Rap...

When I was born my mom bought a Klee print, put it in my nursery and it's been with me all my life... It is two abstract clowns... I've always known they were clowns but learned a few yea5rs ago that my mom can't see them for what they are???

Klee's story, however, is a sad one... He was a Jewish art professor in the 30s in Germany and as all Jews was removed from a job that he loved... I might have the dates slightly off but I think he was removed in '37 and died (from illness) in '39... I believe my print is from '38...

.. I pointed at it, and started to ask "what is....?" and was interrupted with "That's mine!". I just smiled and never tried to finish my question.

Hockney, in an interview, emphatically stated "I don't do ART. I do KITSCH." IMO quite a few others already named should make the same clarification.

But I do like some kitsch.

A few years ago, when I retired and thought I might have some "spare time," I decided to study up on art decided to look at some of it more seriously. Unfortunately I found "too much" to do justice to a general look, and decided to "specialize a little."

My current "data base" contains 9,217 files of "good enough to keep" images and a total of 1,128 artists "good enough to remember," so it's really hard to "pick a favorite."

There are several who consistently produced stuff that I really like, and there are others for whom there's one or two that "grab" but most of their stuff is a real downer.

I am missing any entries for "Artists whose names start with X or Y." Maybe someone has suggestions for filling in those blanks?

I have observed that the quality of "artists who really are" is much better than the quality of critics who try to tell you what to like, so I don't pay much attention to what's the latest thing.

John

Last week it was Norval Morrisseau. Sometimes it's Seurat or Picasso; it's also been Tom Thompson, M.C. Escher, Mary Pratt. A few years ago for a few weeks it was Menasie Ikalujuak, a carver I met in Parry Sound, ON. This week it's Emily Carr.

Depends on my mood.

While I have already indicated my difficulty in picking "a" favorite, I will admit that I have sort of done so in the past.

My "desktop" background for some time now has by Honthorst's "A Young woman Playing A Viola Da Gamba."

I've found that one "pleasant" enough to leave it up for at least a year now.

In the fairly recent past I've also used Bouguereau's "Birth of Venus" and Faraout's "Winter Storm."

There's a big difference in what "wears well enough" to be pleasantly tolerable when you look at it regularly, and what "grabs enough" to draw your attention pleasurably in smaller doses.

(I suppose the Farout wasn't up for long because it was a little "too stimulating."(?))

Lin used a picture of Willie (Nelson of course) for a fairly long time, but a recent monitor failure resulted in her new one having a very different "aspect ratio" where it doesn't fit. (Maybe her mood would improve if I reworked it so she could have some more willie Willie again ????)

Bill D -

I found some excellent high resolution Doré files at artrenewal some time ago, but they've added a requirement that you "log in" to view the large ones since I visited there regularly and I haven't checked out what the requirements for registering with them are now.

Since Faraut (misspelled above - sorry, it was just a typo) isn't too well known, the link for the ARC selection of his stuff is at Faraut ("Winter Storm" is on page 4 - click the image for a larger view). No login required to look at the "standard size" samples.

Can't say I have a favorite - there are so many styles to consider - but I have a coffee cup or two with this design on them. I also have a lovely landscape by the same artist, our own Mudcat, Alice.
