Thursday 12 April, Woodford Bar, Cork 7:30 PM
Ballydehob, West Cork celebrates its sixth annual May Bank Holiday Jazz Festival with a programme launch event featuring great music and notable guests. Festival patron and well known entertainer Alan Shortt will emcee the festivities.
Once guests have had a chance to enjoy refreshment provided by the Woodford Bar, the entertainment will open with Bee-Laude Glade. This group of musicians, formed in Dublin, performs poems to jazz accompaniment. On 12 April guests will hear contemporary and classic Irish poetry performed with verve and set to lively music.
Music will stretch into the night with Anita Williams and Rouge, a well-known Cork-based jazz quintet. Passionate about the tradition they focus on lyrical and melodic strengths and are influenced by classical and contemporary artists such as Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Tom Waits and Randy Newman.
This event was organised in anticipation of yet another year in which this boutique festival in rural West Cork pulls off a jazz festival that can rival any other in Ireland. This year's headline acts are Irish King of Jazz Paddy Cole and famous songstress/storyteller Camille O'Sullivan.
In support of these, the May Bank Holiday Weekend in Ballydehob will see a string of gifted musicians filling the street, the pubs, the cafes and the schools of this idyllic village. Street and pub concerts are FREE and will feature so much talent. 2012 line-up presents: Henry Lowther, Nik Turner, Tuxedo Jazz, Ciara O'Driscoll, Earthship, Dan Moriyama Trio, Sam Hudson Quartet, Blue Velvet, Les & Sam Clague, Molly & Norman, John Gibbon Trio, East Coast Jazz Band, Roberto Carazza Quintet.
Workshops will include "Beatbox" with Sam Clague, "Jazz Instruments" with Nik Turner, and "What is Jazz" with the Sam Hudson Quartet. Annual stalwarts of this festival include the lively street market and open air concerts, the busking competition for youths and adults, and the Charity Concert which this year will feature East Coast Jazz Band.
In recent years the Festival Club has become increasingly popular as it attracts big names to perform in an intimate late night setting. Details and times can be found on our programme which will be launched on 12 April at the Woodford Bar.
The programme will also be available at local retailers and printable from our website: www.ballydehobjazzfestival.org
bjazz2Tickets for charged events are available online at the website and in local retailers leading up to the festival. They will also be available at the door of each performance or event, assuming not already sold out.
