Today I happened to mention that I like the sound of an octave mandolin, and we went to Buckdancer's Choice to look at one. Even though I can't play one I had to feel of one as well as hear it up close. Nice sound. Jacqui insisted that I need one for my birthday which is coming up next month.
Well, I've never won argument with a woman in my life, so the upshot is, I have a new instrument.
I don't dare tell her how much I love Elephants!

Jus' funnin', Capt'n...

Mandolins is fun... You'll get it figured out in about a week or two and be thinkin', "I should have bought one of these 40 years ago..."

BTW keep yer finger nails trimmed... Gets tight in there...

At the risk of sounding like an idjit, what makes it an "octave" mandolin? I know what octaves are and I know what mandos are, just wondering. And, congrats!!

You may get spoilt more as you ripen with age, but ya never stink!**BG**

Kat - It is a mandolin tuned an octave lower, so the neck is longer, frets wider apart, but chords and fingering is identical to a mandolin.

The Irish bouzouki's that are so commonly used in Irish trad and folk now-a-days are similar, though they are a slightly different scale (neck length), and often have octave stings for the lower two pair of strings, AND they are often open tuned ... but some folks use them interchangeably ...

Good for you, Kendall. I'll bet you find yourself pretty useful on it, pretty quickly. I love the octave mando!

You probably have heard one, but it won't stand out to your consciousness when mixed in with a handful of other instruments. They have a rich and warm sound, though; quite beautiful.

I know I get in trouble teasing Kendall about his choice of thread title, but I have to say this.

Kendall, if you are tired of your OLD TOY, just send her along to me!

I always think of Kendall as a Toy Boy.

Will we get to hear the new mando on Saturday?

Good on ya! and jac too, of course.

I got my first "good" bodhran as a Bday gift from my wife. I loved it the minute I laid eyes on it (a Kearns 18" with family crest) and it played beautifully so I practiced more that ever. Drover her nuts. So I bought a case and started practicing with the lads elsewhere and going to sessions and such. Drove her nuts. >;-)

Well, it is wonderful he'll have something to play with when Jacqui's off visiting her English friends. I am sure it fills a deeply-felt void for those occasions.

And relatively harmless, too!! Good choice, Ma'am!!

A cousin had a mandola when I was a boy; always loved that sound.

I've always preferred the sound of a viola to that of a fiddle too.

The best part about this is that the poor Capt'n won't have to listen to that Taylor anymore... That's priceless...

Jed, I beg to differ with your assertion that "chords and fingering is identical to a mandolin".

Because of the longer scale (the frets on my OM are about the same spacing as on my guitar), many common mandolin chords require stretches that are difficult or impossible on an OM. That's one of the reasons they don't sound like mandolins.

Kat, here's a good example.
