During a conversation with a chap in the BA fast bag drop line at Malaga airport, he mentioned that before New York was cleaned up, business men would walk around with $100 in their pocket, so that if attacked they would simply hand a few dollars to the mugger who would then be happy and go away - must be a song there!

That sounds like an urban legend to me. I worked in New York during the beginning of the 80's before it was "cleaned up" and never heard of this - nor did I ever get mugged.

A friend of mine used to carry 2 wallets, his real one, and a decoy with a few bucks and outdated credit cards, in case of a stickup.

The late comedian, Rodney Dangerfield, had a joke about carrying hold up money when he was in New York. That was back at least to the '70's.
