REuTERS

LONDON - Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb was conscious and able to speak to his wife and family after waking from a coma caused by a combination of illnesses that nearly cost him his life, his doctors said yesterday.

Paying tribute to his 'iron will', Gibb's medical team said the singer had defied the odds to regain consciousness more than a week after he went into a coma.

However, the outlook for the 62-yearold musician remains uncertain as he receives more treatment for advanced bowel cancer, pneumonia and liver failure.

'Only three days ago, I warned Robin's wife, Dwina, son, Robin John, and brother, Barry, that I feared the worst,' Dr Andrew Thillainayagam, of Imperial College Healthcare, said in a statement released by Gibb's spokesman.

'We felt it was very likely that Robin would succumb to what seemed to be insurmountable obstacles to any form of meaningful recovery. As a team, we were all concerned that we might be approaching the realms of futility.

'It is testament to Robin's extraordinary courage, iron will and deep reserves of physical strength that he has overcome quite incredible odds to get where he is now.' While Gibb remains weak and needs an oxygen mask to help him breathe, doctors hope that if his condition improves they might be able to move him out of the intensive care unit.

His family has been at his bedside every day, talking and playing him his favourite music, Thillainayagam added.

Gibb founded the Bee Gees with his twin brother Maurice and older brother Barry in the late 1950s and went on to sell an estimated 200 million records.

The group produced some of the most memorable hits of the 1970s, including Night Fever, Tragedy and How Deep Is Your Love.

scouse, I listened to Ellan Vannin...gorgeous! What a talented man Robin is. You're right...it DOES bring tears to your eyes. (Hate to think about this, but that'd be an awesome place to have one's ashes spread.)

Very sad about Robin...I was checking the net in the wee hours of the morning, 3 a.m. EDT to hear anything about Robin, then I read that Levon Helm's in the last stage of cancer. Both of these very talented people will be sorely missed. Yesterday, I played Bee Gee songs; today I'll play Band songs. I love how the Bee Gee's song from around '68 (I've Gotta Get a Message to You) has sort of a Mussel Shoals feel to it. Great piano blues. And Levon had a great blues voice, too...one of the songs I love and which always makes me smile is "When You Awake." Rock on forever, Robin and Levon! Prayers and thank you to you both for great songs from my childhood on.

I might not have used it myself but there isn't anything delicate about dying so the title doesn't really matter does it?

Also, to just keep making it worse and worse, Levon Helm is in the end stages of his battle with cancer as well.............***sigh***..........It wasn't so long ago they were young............as were we.

He is still in a coma. Whether it's the coma that appears late in many cancer diseases right before death, or if it's the body that tries to regenerate, no one knows... or tells.

As far as known, his wife dwina has told the german tv station RTL that Robin reacts to music and that they play music for him and sing... This was told RTL this morning (GB ime 9 am)
this is in my opinion good news...

Several media also report that more tumors have been found, both in the liver and the brain, but this is not confirmed.

Just hope he doesn't suffer...

Very sad and not looking too hopeful. Still, if achievements are a measure at all he has had a very full life so far. Hoping that his passing, when it comes, is peaceful and that the family are all by him.
