Pete famous for his "They don't write em like that any more" He is certainly good company, altho we are all getting older! Pete has been singing performing and compering at Redcar/Saltburn ff for many years and his old mate Vin Garbutt is a near permanent fixture! along with Marie Little who is one of England's finest singers/entertainers in her element at Saltburn ff! Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: Northerner Date: 04 Aug 12 - 06:17 PM I may be there but I've had an extremely bad year for bronchitis and haven't been able to put in the practice time that I need. I won't be able to offer the songs I was hoping to offer. Good news is I am largely recovered from my most recent bout of bronchitis, and am even doing a radio spot a few days after the competition. I am sure you will get plenty of singers coming along... |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: Betsy Date: 05 Aug 12 - 06:01 AM Jeez, another year gone . Whilst reading the thread there must one or two eyebrows raised by dyed- in-the-wool folkies ...... I am neither a Conservative nor a Mason - but let me assure all, that these two entities make the Folk Festival and its' attendees MOST welcome and make great efforts to treat us all as special guests. So enjoy . Look forward to seeing you Padge, and having a good weekend with everyone. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: r.padgett Date: 06 Aug 12 - 03:34 AM Tis near on us now Betsy! Hope your meeting with Christy went ok? Ray |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: Tim Leaning Date: 06 Aug 12 - 03:55 PM Sounds great Betsy Mr G and Marie Little all in one festival...best wishes for great weather and a fine turnout or maybe even fine weather and a great turnout ? |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: r.padgett Date: 06 Aug 12 - 07:42 PM Allus ready for a good turnout and turnup and turnip too Ray ~ sorry just back from Barnsley folk club! |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: Betsy Date: 13 Aug 12 - 02:00 PM Well Padge and Glenn. The winner they produced was an absolutely stunning singer - Angela Archer and so very well done to her . The song she sang at the presentation had the audience spell bound with her delivery and purest of tone and tune. I thought I might as well tell you all what I know, as I can't imagine that Glenn would be able to stand (even) the noise on his computer keyboard today , judging from his condition late Sunday night / Monday morning ,at the establishment where we all engaged in a few post-festival drinks. I hope Padge or Glenn will tell us the name of the song. Otherwise around the concerts some really good sets from both new and established performers. I think I agree that not enough is done, to get venues or a focal point for elongated music sessions. It would be nice to have a regular place where all musicians can have a drop-in(n) type of thing. Watch this space as they say. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: Betsy Date: 14 Aug 12 - 05:58 AM That should have said Well DONE Padge and Glenn. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: r.padgett Date: 14 Aug 12 - 09:41 AM Bet me to it Betsy! Angela sang Sweet William and also a Graham Miles song in the competition. Her Sweet William was the song she sang in the Spa! Beinga weekend festival dedicated venues would certainly be a good thing. I would like to see more Shanties in a session Saturday pm! I think mostly people want to be doing their own thing and singing/playing as well as seeing and appreciating the Festival Guests! There were 6 female and 7 male entrants in Fred Comp singing unaccompanied in trad style Angel Archer a fine strong singer worthy winner Naimh Boadle youngest at 18 yo. and alovely Russian lady Daria Kulesh! Brilliant high standard and thanks to all for their dedication Nice venue the Masonic Hope Paul and Trevor Lister are ok (had been feeling ill) Fine guests once again at Saltburn ff and congrat to all including John Taylor Ray |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: Betsy Date: 15 Aug 12 - 04:59 AM I think you're right Padge - got to be more room for participation for musicians and singers, everyone (more or less) wants to have a "go" - let me see what Johnny T. thinks. Well done again to you and Glenn , might get a pint at Whitby with ya , and, on another note (sic) I don't know when you were at Whitby last , but I noticed last week that Wethersponns are well underway renovating the Little Angel so I wonder what effect THAT might have on beer prices and other things when it opens. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: r.padgett Date: 15 Aug 12 - 05:11 AM Yea thanks Betsy I am about all week staying next to Friendship club up Church street with John Booker Only draw back is Wetherspoons NO MUSIC ~ or maybe a good thing? I think not look at The Plough; although maybe some decent beers at good prices! Ray |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: Betsy Date: 15 Aug 12 - 05:24 AM Aye You're right Ray - it won't make a great deal of difference for us , but it will have an effect on ordinary punters. Send my regards to John. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: Northerner Date: 15 Aug 12 - 08:16 AM I'd like to see one or two more workshops. If a performer of Jez Lowe's quality is booked why not ask him to do a songwriting workshop as well? |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: Betsy Date: 15 Aug 12 - 08:20 AM I know what you mean but, Jeez, Northener - don't you think Jez and the Bad Pennies were busy enough this Weekend ? e.g. on Sunday his first "gig" was at 9.30 in the morning !!!! |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: nutty Date: 15 Aug 12 - 11:05 AM There was a " meet the songwriters" workshop with Jez and Alan Bell - two of the premier songwriters on the folk scene on Saturday morning. I hosted that workshop but didn't see you there. It was interesting and informative, as was last years workshop which included Anna Shannon. Two missed opportunities Northerner.. There are few festivals in the country that do as much to support singer/songwriters as Saltburn. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: GUEST Date: 15 Aug 12 - 11:15 AM I have to travel from Middlesbrough, using bus and train, plus a bit of walking. If the events are too early in the morning I can't get to them. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: nutty Date: 15 Aug 12 - 11:21 AM The workshops didn't start until 11am - not exactly early - almost midday. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: GUEST Date: 15 Aug 12 - 11:33 AM The bus station was closed for refurbishment and only reopened today. I have actually been to one of Jez's workshops, in Helmsley, but it was a few years ago. I have taken poetry courses since then and would be in a better position to follow up a taught workshop. Meet the Artist is not the same thing as a workshop. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: nutty Date: 15 Aug 12 - 03:00 PM " Meet the Artist is not the same thing as a workshop." I don't see how you can say that without having attended. I'm sure people who were there would say that the workshop was extremely helpful and informative. |
Subject: RE: Fred Jordan Comp Saltburn FF 2012 From: r.padgett Date: 15 Aug 12 - 05:23 PM Meet the Artist can be confusing as the ones I have done are a chat along, fact finding (Cleckheaton fest) Warwick ff and others are often just a guest or guests singing in a usually "smaller venue" inviting questions I think Saltburn hadd Jez and Bill and Dave Workshops (singers with Jez and Alan Bell) was shown as songwriting workshop, so one hopes that some songwriting tips were forthcoming Getting up at any time before lunch at weekend festivals can be problematic, altho Saltburn ff has 10 am starts often and well attended Ray |
