The point is that a civilized people will not allow hate-filled people like Breivik to prevail. Adding more hatred to the mix only makes things worse.

Locking Breivik away like a dangerous animal will accomplish all that is necessary without having to execute him just to satisy someone's blood lust.

Lizzie, even though you are probably correct that this person is irredeemable, I still think that the difference between Us and Them is importsnt when more than two deep breaths divide the original act and response. If you had been there after 76 and you prevented a 77th, you'd have deserved a medal. When we have a Brevik under physical control, I think we need to NOT behave like him or like the sods who cut off Victor Jara's hands to humiliate him before killing him outright. Should he see the light of day outside? Not in a thousand years. Should anything except the killing have been allowed in testimony in court? Of course not. Should we make him a martyr to those benighted souls who think what he did was excusable? I think the evidence of the millennia of war over competing mythologies, still in full swing in Syria and the greater middle east (much of it perpetrated by my own government), all over Africa, more subtly in China, all suggest not. If we have the music, we have the only long term power over the Joe McCarthys with guns. The bastards are rightly more afraid of the music and art than of guns. I am NOT above revenge, and I did not suffer a personal loss in Brevik's rampage, but we all lost people to Hiitler and to Pinochet. When we have the time, we do well to keep the state killing to a minimum.

If he had killed one or both of my children, or friends of my children, I'd have calmly pulled the trigger, Ian and that would have been that, over and done with, except for the never-ending healing of all the families he smashed apart....

To feel that he's 'still out there', still thinking, plotting, laughing at them, and he WILL be laughing. He has NO conscience, none whatsoever, not a single shred...and it will never surface, for that part of his brain is dead, not there, never was...It is the same with so many of these killers, cold-blooded because the messages in the brain never get to reach the part of them connected to emotions of pain, of empathy for others...

I don't care if he expect violence. I don't care about him in any way at all.   I just feel the pain and horror of the parents, the families involved...

Yesterday was my Son's 18th Birthday, and I thought of all the Mums and Dads who were in deep grief yesterday....I lost two little 'souls' before Josh was born, had those words "I'm sorry, but you're baby is dead' spoken to me, so I know, just a fraction of the unbelievable pain they will have to live with for the rest of their days, whilst this man sits in comfort, being treated kindly by the Norweigan prison services...

He will be up for review time after time if they find him insane...and no doubt he'll put in for everything he can grab, legal-case-wise...He will be represented by lawyers who will make a fortune out of him, probably have already done so....spoken to, worked with, worked on, sympathized with by some, made a hero by other like-minded brain patterns....

And whilst their children lie cold in their graves, he continues to smile and laugh....

No, it is wrong...

If he were a dog who had rabidly attacked so many people, he'd have been shot there and then, instantly...

Yet our own species do it and we spend a bloody fortune on them, get rich from them and talk about them for decades to come....

No...a thousand times, no.....

I think making him watch (or at least be in the same room with it, and no control of the audio) the memorial in Youngstorget Square over and over and bleeping over would be a far more satisfactory vengeance than putting him out of his misery. He expects vioulence. We need collectively to disappoint him over and over. There is no hope of persuading him, you're quite right.

It won't make a bit of difference to the killer. People don't understand the mindset there. He has not a shred of remorse, only jubilation for what he did and were he EVER allowed out again, he'd do it all over again, but far worse, I've no doubt, for he'll spend his every waking moment plotting an even 'better' (in his mind) killing next time round...

I have huge admiration for the People of Norway, but personally, I think this man has lost the right to his life. I found his televised trial abhorrent, even though I know the Norweigans wanted it to be shown publicly..and the fact he was allowed to have a final say, after all he had already said, was utterly wrong, in every conceivable way imaginable, in my humble opinion....

The idea seems to have been to sing it as close to the courtroom where Breivik is being tried as possible. He is on record as saying he hates the song and regards it as Marxist propaganda.

Today 40,000 Norwegians crammed into Oslo's Youngstorget Square to sing a Norwegian version of Pete Seeger's song Children of the Rainbow. Youngstorget square is very near to the court where Anders Breivik is being tried for mass murder.
